1 Kings 20
1 Ben Hadad king of Aram gathered all his army together. There were thirty-two lesser kings with him, and horses and chariots. He went up, besieged Samaria and fought against it.
Alors Ben-hadad Roi de Syrie assembla toute son armée, et il y avait avec lui trente-deux Rois, des chevaux, et des chariots; puis il monta, assiégea Samarie, et il lui fit la guerre.
2 He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, and said to him, “Ben Hadad says this:
Et il envoya des messagers vers Achab Roi d'Israël dans la ville;
3 'Your silver and your gold are mine. Also your wives and children, the best ones, are now mine.'”
Et il lui fit dire: Ainsi a dit Ben-hadad: Ton argent et ton or est à moi, tes femmes aussi, et tes beaux enfants sont à moi.
4 The king of Israel answered and said, “It is as you say, my master, king. I and all that I have are yours.”
Et le Roi d'Israël répondit, et dit: mon Seigneur, je suis à toi comme tu le dis, et tout ce que j'ai.
5 The messengers came again and said, “Ben Hadad says this, 'I sent word to you saying that you must give me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children.
Ensuite les messagers retournèrent, et dirent: Ainsi a dit expressément Ben-hadad: Puisque je t'ai envoyé dire: Donne-moi ton argent et ton or, ta femme, et tes enfants;
6 But I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they will search your house and your servants' houses. They will seize with their own hands and take away whatever pleases their eyes.'”
Certainement demain en ce même temps j'enverrai chez toi mes serviteurs, qui fouilleront ta maison, et les maisons de tes serviteurs, et se saisiront de tout ce que tu prends plaisir à voir, et ils l'emporteront.
7 Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land together and said, “Please take note and see how this man seeks trouble. He has sent word to me in order to take my wives, children, and silver and gold, and I have not refused him.”
Alors le Roi d'Israël appela tous les Anciens du pays, et dit: Considérez je vous prie, et voyez que celui-ci ne cherche que du mal; car il avait envoyé vers moi pour avoir mes femmes, et mes enfants, mon argent et mon or; et je ne lui avais rien refusé.
8 All the elders and all the people said to Ahab, “Do not listen to him or consent to his demands.”
Et tous les Anciens et tout le peuple lui dirent: Ne l'écoute point, et ne lui complais point.
9 So Ahab said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Tell my master the king, 'I agree to everything that you sent your servant to do the first time, but I cannot accept this second demand.'” So the messengers left and took this response to Ben Hadad.
Il répondit donc aux messagers de Ben-hadad: Dites au Roi mon Seigneur: Je ferai tout ce que tu as envoyé dire la première fois à ton serviteur, mais je ne pourrai faire ceci; et les messagers s'en allèrent, et lui rapportèrent cette réponse.
10 Then Ben Hadad sent his reply to Ahab, and said, “May the gods do so to me and more also, if even the ashes of Samaria will be enough for all the people who follow me to have a handful each.”
Et Ben-hadad renvoya vers lui, en disant: Ainsi me fassent les dieux, et ainsi ils y ajoutent, si la poudre de Samarie suffit pour remplir le creux de la main de [tous] ceux du peuple qui me suivent.
11 The king of Israel answered and said, “Tell Ben Hadad, 'No one who is just putting on his armor, should boast as if he were taking it off.'”
Mais le Roi d'Israël répondit, et dit: Dites-lui: que celui qui endosse [le harnois], ne se glorifie point comme celui qui le quitte.
12 Ben Hadad heard this message as he was drinking, he and the kings under him who were in their tents. Ben Hadad commanded his men, “Line yourselves up in position for battle.” So they prepared themselves in position of battle to attack the city.
Et il arriva qu'aussitôt que [Ben-hadad] eut entendu cette réponse (or il buvait alors dans les tentes avec les Rois) il dit à ses serviteurs: Rangez-vous en bataille. Et ils se rangèrent en bataille contre la ville.
13 Then behold, a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel and said, “Yahweh says, 'Have you seen this great army? Look, I will place it into your hand today, and you will know that I am Yahweh.'”
Alors voici un Prophète qui vint vers Achab Roi d'Israël, et qui lui dit: Ainsi a dit l'Eternel, n'as-tu pas vu cette grande multitude? Voilà, je m'en vais la livrer aujourd'hui entre tes mains, et tu sauras que je suis l'Eternel.
14 Ahab replied, “By whom?” Yahweh replied and said, “By the young officers who serve the governors of the districts.” Then Ahab said, “Who will begin the battle?” Yahweh answered, “You.”
Et Achab dit: Par qui? et [le Prophète lui] répondit: Ainsi a dit l'Eternel: Ce sera par les valets des Gouverneurs des Provinces. Et [Achab] dit: Qui est-ce qui commencera la bataille? et il lui répondit: Toi.
15 Then Ahab mustered the young officers who served the governors of the districts. They numbered 232. After them he mustered all the soldiers, all the army of Israel; seven thousand in number.
Alors il dénombra les valets des Gouverneurs des Provinces, qui furent deux cent trente et deux; après eux il dénombra tout le peuple de tous les enfants d'Israël, qui furent sept mille.
16 They went out at noon. Ben Hadad had been drinking himself drunk in his tent, he and the thirty-two lesser kings who were supporting him.
Et ils sortirent en plein midi, lorsque Ben-hadad buvait, s'enivrant dans les tentes, lui, et les trente-deux Rois qui étaient venus à son secours.
17 The young officers who served the governors of the districts went forward first. Then Ben Hadad was informed by scouts that he had sent out, “Men are coming out from Samaria.”
Les valets donc des Gouverneurs des Provinces sortirent les premiers, et Ben-hadad envoya quelques-uns qui le lui rapportèrent, en disant: Il est sorti des gens de Samarie.
18 Ben Hadad said, “Whether they have come out for peace or war, take them alive.”
Et il dit: Soit qu'ils soient sortis pour la paix, ou qu'ils soient sortis pour faire la guerre, saisissez-les tous vifs.
19 So the young officers who served the governors of the districts went out of the city and the army followed them.
Les valets donc des Gouverneurs des Provinces sortirent de la ville, et l'armée qui était après eux.
20 Each man killed his opponent. The Arameans fled and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Aram escaped on a horse along with some horsemen.
Et chacun d'eux frappa son homme, de sorte que les Syriens s'enfuirent, et Israël les poursuivit; et Ben-hadad Roi de Syrie se sauva sur un cheval, et les gens de cheval aussi.
21 Then the king of Israel went out and attacked the horses and chariots, and killed the Arameans in a great slaughter.
Et le Roi d'Israël sortit, et frappa les chevaux, et les chariots, en sorte qu'il fit un grand carnage des Syriens.
22 So the prophet came to the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself, and understand and plan what you are doing, because at the return of the year the king of Aram will come up against you again.”
Puis le Prophète vint vers le Roi d'Israël, et lui dit: Va, renforce-toi; et sache, et regarde ce que tu auras à faire; car l'an révolu le Roi de Syrie remontera contre toi.
23 The servants of the king of Aram said to him, “Their god is a god of the hills. That is why they were stronger than we were. But now let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they are.
Or les serviteurs du Roi de Syrie lui dirent: Leurs dieux sont des dieux de montagne, c'est pourquoi ils ont été plus forts que nous, mais combattons contr'eux dans la campagne; [et] certainement, nous serons plus forts qu'eux.
24 So you must do this: Remove all the kings from their positions of authority and replace them with military commanders.
Fais donc ceci: Ote chacun de ces Rois de leur place, et mets en leur lieu des capitaines.
25 Raise up an army like the army you lost—horse for horse and chariot for chariot—so we can fight them in the plain. Then surely we will be stronger than they are.” So Ben Hadad listened to their advice and did what they advised.
Puis lève une armée pareille à celle que tu as perdue, et autant de chevaux, et de chariots, et nous combattrons contr'eux dans la campagne, [et tu verras] si nous ne sommes pas plus forts qu'eux. Il acquiesça donc à ce qu'ils lui dirent, et le fit ainsi.
26 After the beginning of the new year, Ben Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
Un an donc après, Ben-hadad dénombra les Syriens, et monta en Aphek pour combattre contre Israël.
27 The people of Israel were mustered and supplied to fight against them. The people of Israel camped before them like two little flocks of goats, but the Arameans filled the countryside.
On fit aussi le dénombrement des enfants d'Israël; et s'étant fournis de vivres, ils s'en allèrent contre les Syriens. Les enfants d'Israël se campèrent vis-à-vis d'eux; et ils ne paraissaient pas plus que deux troupeaux de chèvres; mais les Syriens remplissaient la terre.
28 Then a man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel and said, “Yahweh says: 'Because the Arameans have said that Yahweh is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys, I will place this great army into your hand, and you will know that I am Yahweh.'”
Alors l'homme de Dieu vint, et parla au Roi d'Israël, et lui dit: Ainsi a dit l'Eternel: Parce que les Syriens ont dit: L'Eternel est Dieu des montagnes, et n'est point Dieu des vallées, je livrerai entre tes mains toute cette grande multitude, et vous saurez que je suis l'Eternel.
29 So the armies camped opposite each other for seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle started. The people of Israel killed 100,000 Aramean footmen in one day.
Sept jours durant ils demeurèrent campés vis-à-vis les uns des autres; mais le septième jour ils en vinrent aux mains; et les enfants d'Israël frappèrent en un seul jour cent mille hommes de pied des Syriens.
30 The rest fled to Aphek, into the city, and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. Ben Hadad fled and went into the city, into an inner room.
Et le reste s'enfuit dans la ville d'Aphek, où la muraille tomba sur vingt et sept mille hommes qui étaient demeurés de reste. Et Ben-hadad s'enfuit, et entra dans la ville, [et il se cacha] dans le cabinet d'une chambre.
31 Ben Hadad's servants said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life.”
Et ses serviteurs lui dirent: Voici maintenant, nous avons ouï dire que les Rois de la maison d'Israël sont des Rois débonnaires; maintenant donc mettons des sacs sur nos reins, et mettons des cordes à nos têtes; et sortons vers le Roi d'Israël; peut-être qu'il te donnera la vie sauve.
32 So they put sackcloth on their waists and ropes around their heads and then went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben Hadad said, 'Please let me live.'” Ahab said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
Ils se ceignirent donc de sacs autour de leurs reins, et de cordes autour de leurs têtes, et ils vinrent vers le Roi d'Israël, et lui dirent: Ton serviteur Ben-hadad dit: Je te prie que je vive. Et il répondit: Vit-il encore? Il est mon frère.
33 Now the men were listening for any sign from Ahab, so they quickly answered him, “Yes, your brother Ben Hadad is alive.” Then Ahab said, “Go and bring him.” Then Ben Hadad came to him, and Ahab had him come up into his chariot.
Et ces gens étaient là comme au guet, et ils se hâtèrent de savoir précisément [s'ils auraient] de lui [ce qu'ils prétendaient], et ils dirent: Ben-hadad est-il ton frère? Et il répondit: Allez, [et] l'amenez. Ben-hadad donc sortit vers lui, et il le fit monter sur le chariot.
34 Ben Hadad said to Ahab, “I will restore to you the cities that my father took from your father, and you may make markets for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” Ahab replied, “I will let you go with this covenant.” So Ahab made a covenant with him and then let him go.
Et [Ben-hadad] lui dit: Je te rendrai les villes que mon père avait prises à ton père, et tu te feras des places en Damas comme mon père avait fait en Samarie. Et moi, [répondit Achab], je te renverrai avec cette alliance. Il traita donc alliance avec lui, et le laissa aller.
35 A certain man, one of the sons of the prophets, said to one of his fellow prophets by the word of Yahweh, “Please hit me.” But the man refused to hit him.
Alors quelqu'un d'entre les fils des Prophètes dit à son compagnon, suivant la parole de l'Eternel: Frappe-moi; je te prie: mais celui-là refusa de le frapper.
36 Then the prophet said to his fellow prophet, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, as soon as you leave me, a lion will kill you.” As soon as that man had left him, a lion came upon him and killed him.
Et il lui dit: Parce que tu n'as point obéi à la parole de l'Eternel, voilà tu vas te séparer de moi, et un lion te tuera. Quand il se fut séparé de lui, un lion le trouva, et le tua.
37 Then the prophet found another man and said, “Please hit me.” So the man hit him and wounded him.
Puis il trouva un autre homme, et lui dit: Frappe-moi, je te prie; et cet homme-là ne manqua pas à le frapper, et il le blessa.
38 Then the prophet left and waited for the king by the road; he had disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes.
Après cela le Prophète s'en alla, et s'arrêta [attendant] le Roi sur le chemin, et il se déguisa ayant un bandeau sur ses yeux.
39 As the king passed by, the prophet cried out to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the heat of the battle, and a soldier stopped and brought a man to me and said, 'Watch this man. If by any means he goes missing, your life will be given for his life, or you must pay a talent of silver.'
Et comme le Roi passait, il cria au Roi, et lui dit: Ton serviteur était allé au milieu de la bataille, et voilà quelqu'un s'étant retiré, m'a amené un homme, et m'a dit: Garde cet homme, s'il vient à s'échapper, ta vie en répondra, ou tu en payeras un talent d'argent.
40 But because your servant was busy going here and there, the man escaped.” Then the king of Israel said to him, “This is what your punishment will be—you yourself have decided it.”
Or il est arrivé que comme ton serviteur faisait quelques affaires çà et là, cet homme-là ne s'est point trouvé. Et le Roi d'Israël lui répondit: Telle est ta condamnation, tu en as décidé.
41 Then the prophet quickly removed the bandage from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized that he was one of the prophets.
Alors cet homme ôta promptement le bandeau de dessus ses yeux, et le Roi d'Israël reconnut que c'était un des Prophètes.
42 The prophet said to the king, “Yahweh says, 'Because you have let go from your hand the man whom I had sentenced to death, your life will take the place of his life, and your people for his people.'”
Et [ce Prophète] lui dit: Ainsi a dit l'Eternel, parce que tu as laissé aller d'entre tes mains l'homme que j'avais condamné à l'interdit, ta vie répondra pour la sienne, et ton peuple pour son peuple.
43 So the king of Israel went to his house resentful and angry, and arrived in Samaria.
Mais le Roi d'Israël se retira en sa maison tout refrogné et indigné, et vint en Samarie.
