Philippians 1
1 To all Christ’s People at Philippi, with the Presiding Officers and Assistants, from Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus.
Paulus en Timóteus, dienaars van Christus Jesus: aan al de heiligen in Christus Jesus, die te Filippi zijn, met hun bisschoppen en diakens:
2 May God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ bless you, and give you peace.
Genade en vrede zij u van God onzen Vader en van den Heer Jesus Christus.
3 Every recollection that I have of you is a cause of thankfulness to God,
Ik breng dank aan mijn God, -zo dikwijls ik aan u denk,
4 always, in every prayer that I offer for you all — my prayers are full of joy —
en bij al mijn gebeden met blijdschap voor u allen bid,
5 Because of the share that you have had in spreading the Good News, from the first day that you received it until now.
voor uw gehechtheid aan het Evangelie van de eerste dag af tot heden toe.
6 For of this I am confident, that he who began a good work in you will complete it in readiness for the Day of Jesus Christ.
Want ik heb het vaste vertrouwen, dat Hij, die in u het goede werk is begonnen, het ook zal voltooien tot op de Dag van Christus Jesus.
7 And, indeed, I am justified in feeling thus about you all; because you have a warm place in my heart — you who all, both in my imprisonment and in the work of defending and establishing the Good News, shared my privilege with me.
Want het is niet meer dan billijk, dat ik zó over u allen denk, daar ik u ronddraag in mijn hart, en daar gij allen deelgenoot aan mijn genade zijt, zowel in mijn boeien als in de verdediging en bevestiging van het Evangelie.
8 God will bear me witness how I yearn over you all with the tenderness of Christ Jesus.
God is mijn getuige, hoe ik met de hartelijke liefde van Christus Jesus naar u allen verlang.
9 And what I pray for is this — that your love may grow yet stronger and stronger, with increasing knowledge and all discernment,
En ik bid, dat uw liefde steeds meer moge winnen aan kennis en zedelijk inzicht,
10 until you are able to appreciate all moral distinctions. And I pray, too, that you may be kept pure and blameless against the Day of Christ,
om scherp het goed van het kwaad te onderscheiden; en dat gij op de Dag van Christus rein en onberispelijk moogt zijn,
11 bearing a rich harvest of that righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
beladen met de vrucht der gerechtigheid, die door Jesus Christus is verworven, tot eer en glorie van God.
12 Brothers, I want you to realise that what has happened to me has actually served to forward the Good News.
Broeders, ik wil u doen weten, dat mijn lotgevallen veel hebben bijgedragen tot de vooruitgang van het Evangelie.
13 It has even become evident, not only to all the Imperial Guard, but to every one else, that it is for Christ’s sake that I am in chains.
Heel de keizerlijke lijfwacht en alle anderen zijn er door te weten gekomen, dat ik mijn boeien draag om Christus’ wil;
14 And besides this, most of our Brothers have gained confidence in the Lord through my chains, and now venture with far greater freedom to speak of God’s Message fearlessly.
en de meeste broeders zijn door mijn boeien met vertrouwen vervuld op den Heer, en verkondigen het woord Gods met groter durf en zonder vrees.
15 It is true that some do proclaim the Christ out of Jealousy and opposition; but there are others who proclaim him from good-will.
Zeker, sommigen preken Christus uit nijd en strijd, maar anderen toch ook met een zuivere mening.
16 The latter do it from love for me, knowing that I have been appointed to plead the cause of the Good News.
Dezen preken Christus uit liefde, omdat ze weten, dat ik voor de verdediging van het Evangelie gevangen zit;
17 The former spread the news of the Christ in a factious spirit, and not sincerely, thinking to add to the pain of my chains.
anderen echter uit partijzucht, en met de verkeerde bedoeling, om daardoor mijn boeien nog te verzwaren.
18 But what of that? Only that in some way or other, either with assumed or with real earnestness, Christ is being made known; and at that I rejoice.
Maar wat doet het er toe? Hoe dan ook, met of zonder bijbedoeling, wanneer Christus maar wordt gepreekt! Daarover verheug ik mij, en zal ik me ook blijven verheugen.
19 Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that, through your prayers and through a rich supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, ‘all this will make for my Salvation.’
Want ik weet, dat dit mij tot heil strekken zal, dank zij uw gebed en de bijstand van den Geest van Jesus Christus.
20 And this will fulfil my earnest expectation and hope that I shall have no cause for shame, but that, with unfailing courage, now as hitherto, Christ will be honoured in my body, whether by my life or by my death,
Hiernaar smacht ik en hoop ik, dat ik in geen enkel opzicht zal worden beschaamd, maar dat ik nu zoals immer met alle vrijmoedigheid Christus verheerlijken zal in mijn lichaam, hetzij door leven of dood.
21 for to me life is Christ, and death is gain.
Want leven is voor mij: "Christus," en sterven dus een gewin;
22 But what if the life here in the body — if this brings me fruit from my labours? Then which to choose I cannot tell! I am sorely perplexed either way!
maar wanneer ik in het vlees blijf leven, dan betekent dit voor mij: vruchtbare arbeid. Ik weet dus niet, wat ik kiezen moet;
23 My own desire is to depart and be with Christ, for this would be far better.
ik word naar twee kanten getrokken. Ik smacht er naar, ontbonden te worden en met Christus te zijn; want dit is verreweg het beste.
24 But, for your sakes, it may be more needful that I should still remain here in the body.
Maar meer noodzakelijk is het om wille van u, dat ik blijf leven in het vlees.
25 Yes, I am confident that this is so, and therefore I am sure that I shall stay, and stay near you all, to promote your progress and joy in the Faith;
En omdat ik hiervan overtuigd ben, weet ik ook, dat ik zal blijven leven, en bij u allen zal blijven voor uw vooruitgang in het geloof, en uw vreugde daarin.
26 so that, when you once more have me among you, you, in your union with Christ Jesus, may find in me fresh cause for exultation.
Zo zult gij bij mijn terugkeer nog meer over mij kunnen roemen in Christus Jesus.
27 Under all circumstances let your lives be worthy of the Good News of the Christ: so that, whether I come and see you, or whether I hear of your affairs at a distance, I may know that you are standing firm, animated by one spirit, and joining with one heart in a common struggle for the Faith taught by the Good News,
Enkel dit! Leidt een leven, dat het Evangelie van Christus waardig is. Zó, dat ik bij mijn komst het kan zien, of bij mijn afwezigheid horen, dat gij vast blijft staan in één geest, dat gij eensgezind strijdt voor het geloof in het Evangelie,
28 without ever shrinking from your opponents. To them this will be a sign of their Destruction and of your Salvation — a sign from God.
en dat gij u helemaal niet bang laat maken door de tegenstanders. Voor hen is dit een teken van ondergang, maar voor u een teken van zaligheid; en wel een teken van God.
29 For, on behalf of Christ, you have had the privilege granted you, not only of trusting in him, but also of suffering on his behalf.
Want dan valt u de genade ten deel, in Christus te geloven niet alleen, maar ook voor Hem te lijden,
30 You will be engaged in the same hard struggle as that which you once saw me waging, and which you hear that I am waging still.
en dezelfde strijd te doorstaan, die gij vroeger van mij hebt gezien, en thans van mij hoort.
