< Luke 11 >

1 One day Jesus was at a certain place praying, and, when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him: “Master, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”
anantaraM sa kasmiMzcit sthAnE prArthayata tatsamAptau satyAM tasyaikaH ziSyastaM jagAda hE prabhO yOhan yathA svaziSyAn prArthayitum upadiSTavAn tathA bhavAnapyasmAn upadizatu|
2 “When you pray,” Jesus answered, “say — ‘Father, May thy name be held holy, thy Kingdom come.
tasmAt sa kathayAmAsa, prArthanakAlE yUyam itthaM kathayadhvaM, hE asmAkaM svargasthapitastava nAma pUjyaM bhavatu; tava rAjatvaM bhavatu; svargE yathA tathA pRthivyAmapi tavEcchayA sarvvaM bhavatu|
3 Give us each day the bread that we shall need;
pratyaham asmAkaM prayOjanIyaM bhOjyaM dEhi|
4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who wrongs us; and take us not into temptation.’”
yathA vayaM sarvvAn aparAdhinaH kSamAmahE tathA tvamapi pApAnyasmAkaM kSamasva| asmAn parIkSAM mAnaya kintu pApAtmanO rakSa|
5 Jesus also said to them: “Suppose that one of you who has a friend were to go to him in the middle of the night and say ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,
pazcAt sOparamapi kathitavAn yadi yuSmAkaM kasyacid bandhustiSThati nizIthE ca tasya samIpaM sa gatvA vadati,
6 for a friend of mine has arrived at my house after a journey, and I have nothing to offer him;’
hE bandhO pathika EkO bandhu rmama nivEzanam AyAtaH kintu tasyAtithyaM karttuM mamAntikE kimapi nAsti, ataEva pUpatrayaM mahyam RNaM dEhi;
7 And suppose that the other should answer from inside ‘Do not trouble me; the door is already fastened, and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything’;
tadA sa yadi gRhamadhyAt prativadati mAM mA klizAna, idAnIM dvAraM ruddhaM zayanE mayA saha bAlakAzca tiSThanti tubhyaM dAtum utthAtuM na zaknOmi,
8 I tell you that, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is a friend, yet because of his persistence he will rouse himself and give him what he wants.
tarhi yuSmAnahaM vadAmi, sa yadi mitratayA tasmai kimapi dAtuM nOttiSThati tathApi vAraM vAraM prArthanAta utthApitaH san yasmin tasya prayOjanaM tadEva dAsyati|
9 And so I say to you — Ask, and your prayer shall be granted: search, and you shall find; knock, and the door shall be opened to you.
ataH kAraNAt kathayAmi, yAcadhvaM tatO yuSmabhyaM dAsyatE, mRgayadhvaM tata uddEzaM prApsyatha, dvAram Ahata tatO yuSmabhyaM dvAraM mOkSyatE|
10 For he that asks receives, he that searches finds, and to him that knocks the door shall be opened.
yO yAcatE sa prApnOti, yO mRgayatE sa EvOddEzaM prApnOti, yO dvAram Ahanti tadarthaM dvAraM mOcyatE|
11 What father among you, if his son asks him for a fish, will give him a snake instead,
putrENa pUpE yAcitE tasmai pASANaM dadAti vA matsyE yAcitE tasmai sarpaM dadAti
12 or, if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
vA aNPE yAcitE tasmai vRzcikaM dadAti yuSmAkaM madhyE ka EtAdRzaH pitAstE?
13 If you, then, naturally wicked though you are, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those that ask him!”
tasmAdEva yUyamabhadrA api yadi svasvabAlakEbhya uttamAni dravyANi dAtuM jAnItha tarhyasmAkaM svargasthaH pitA nijayAcakEbhyaH kiM pavitram AtmAnaM na dAsyati?
14 Once Jesus was driving out a dumb demon, and, when the demon had gone out, the dumb man spoke. The people were amazed at this;
anantaraM yIzunA kasmAccid Ekasmin mUkabhUtE tyAjitE sati sa bhUtatyaktO mAnuSO vAkyaM vaktum ArEbhE; tatO lOkAH sakalA AzcaryyaM mEnirE|
15 but some of them said: “He drives out demons by the help of Baal-zebub, the chief of the demons”;
kintu tESAM kEcidUcu rjanOyaM bAlasibUbA arthAd bhUtarAjEna bhUtAn tyAjayati|
16 while others, to test him, asked him for some sign from the heavens.
taM parIkSituM kEcid AkAzIyam EkaM cihnaM darzayituM taM prArthayAnjcakrirE|
17 Jesus himself, however, was aware of what they were thinking, and said to them: “Any kingdom wholly divided against itself becomes a desolation; and a divided house falls.
tadA sa tESAM manaHkalpanAM jnjAtvA kathayAmAsa, kasyacid rAjyasya lOkA yadi parasparaM virundhanti tarhi tad rAjyam nazyati; kEcid gRhasthA yadi parasparaM virundhanti tarhi tEpi nazyanti|
18 So, too, if Satan is wholly divided against himself, how can his kingdom last? Yet you say that I drive out demons by the help of Baal-zebub.
tathaiva zaitAnapi svalOkAn yadi viruNaddhi tadA tasya rAjyaM kathaM sthAsyati? bAlasibUbAhaM bhUtAn tyAjayAmi yUyamiti vadatha|
19 But, if it is by Baal-zebub’s help that I drive out demons, by whose help is it that your own sons drive them out? Therefore they shall themselves be your judges.
yadyahaM bAlasibUbA bhUtAn tyAjayAmi tarhi yuSmAkaM santAnAH kEna tyAjayanti? tasmAt taEva kathAyA EtasyA vicArayitArO bhaviSyanti|
20 But, if it is by the hand of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God must already be upon you.
kintu yadyaham Izvarasya parAkramENa bhUtAn tyAjayAmi tarhi yuSmAkaM nikaTam Izvarasya rAjyamavazyam upatiSThati|
21 When a strong man is keeping guard, fully armed, over his own mansion, his property is in safety;
balavAn pumAn susajjamAnO yatikAlaM nijATTAlikAM rakSati tatikAlaM tasya dravyaM nirupadravaM tiSThati|
22 but, when one still stronger has attacked and overpowered him, he takes away all the weapons on which the other had relied, and divides his spoil.
kintu tasmAd adhikabalaH kazcidAgatya yadi taM jayati tarhi yESu zastrAstrESu tasya vizvAsa AsIt tAni sarvvANi hRtvA tasya dravyANi gRhlAti|
23 He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not help me to gather is scattering.
ataH kAraNAd yO mama sapakSO na sa vipakSaH, yO mayA saha na saMgRhlAti sa vikirati|
24 No sooner does a foul spirit leave a man, than it passes through places where there is no water, in search of rest; and finding none, it says ‘I will go back to the home which I left’;
aparanjca amEdhyabhUtO mAnuSasyAntarnirgatya zuSkasthAnE bhrAntvA vizrAmaM mRgayatE kintu na prApya vadati mama yasmAd gRhAd AgatOhaM punastad gRhaM parAvRtya yAmi|
25 but, on coming there, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order.
tatO gatvA tad gRhaM mArjitaM zObhitanjca dRSTvA
26 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in, and make their home there; and the last state of that man proves to be worse than the first.”
tatkSaNam apagatya svasmAdapi durmmatIn aparAn saptabhUtAn sahAnayati tE ca tadgRhaM pavizya nivasanti| tasmAt tasya manuSyasya prathamadazAtaH zESadazA duHkhatarA bhavati|
27 As Jesus was saying this, a woman in the crowd, raising her voice, exclaimed: “Happy was the mother who bore you and nursed you!”
asyAH kathAyAH kathanakAlE janatAmadhyasthA kAcinnArI tamuccaiHsvaraM prOvAca, yA yOSit tvAM garbbhE'dhArayat stanyamapAyayacca saiva dhanyA|
28 But Jesus replied: “Rather, happy are those who listen to God’s Message and keep it.”
kintu sOkathayat yE paramEzvarasya kathAM zrutvA tadanurUpam Acaranti taEva dhanyAH|
29 As the crowds increased, Jesus began to speak: “This generation is a wicked generation. It is asking a sign, but no sign shall be given it except the sign of Jonah.
tataH paraM tasyAntikE bahulOkAnAM samAgamE jAtE sa vaktumArEbhE, AdhunikA duSTalOkAzcihnaM draSTumicchanti kintu yUnasbhaviSyadvAdinazcihnaM vinAnyat kinjciccihnaM tAn na darzayiSyatE|
30 For, as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so shall the Son of Man be to this generation.
yUnas tu yathA nInivIyalOkAnAM samIpE cihnarUpObhavat tathA vidyamAnalOkAnAm ESAM samIpE manuSyaputrOpi cihnarUpO bhaviSyati|
31 At the Judgment the Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation, and will condemn them, because she came from the very ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; and here is more than a Solomon!
vicArasamayE idAnIntanalOkAnAM prAtikUlyEna dakSiNadEzIyA rAjnjI prOtthAya tAn dOSiNaH kariSyati, yataH sA rAjnjI sulEmAna upadEzakathAM zrOtuM pRthivyAH sImAta Agacchat kintu pazyata sulEmAnOpi gurutara EkO janO'smin sthAnE vidyatE|
32 At the Judgment the men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation, and will condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s proclamation; and here is more than a Jonah!
aparanjca vicArasamayE nInivIyalOkA api varttamAnakAlikAnAM lOkAnAM vaiparItyEna prOtthAya tAn dOSiNaH kariSyanti, yatO hEtOstE yUnasO vAkyAt cittAni parivarttayAmAsuH kintu pazyata yUnasOtigurutara EkO janO'smin sthAnE vidyatE|
33 No one sets light to a lamp, and then puts it in the cellar or under the corn-measure, but he puts it on the lamp-stand, so that any one who comes in may see the light.
pradIpaM prajvAlya drONasyAdhaH kutrApi guptasthAnE vA kOpi na sthApayati kintu gRhapravEzibhyO dIptiM dAtaM dIpAdhArOparyyEva sthApayati|
34 The lamp of the body is your eye. When your eye is unclouded, your whole body, also, is lit up; but, as soon as your eye is diseased, your body, also, is darkened.
dEhasya pradIpazcakSustasmAdEva cakSu ryadi prasannaM bhavati tarhi tava sarvvazarIraM dIptimad bhaviSyati kintu cakSu ryadi malImasaM tiSThati tarhi sarvvazarIraM sAndhakAraM sthAsyati|
35 Take care, therefore, that the inner Light is not darkness.
asmAt kAraNAt tavAntaHsthaM jyOti ryathAndhakAramayaM na bhavati tadarthE sAvadhAnO bhava|
36 If, then, your whole body is lit up, and no corner of it darkened, the whole will be lit up, just as when a lamp gives you light by its brilliance.”
yataH zarIrasya kutrApyaMzE sAndhakArE na jAtE sarvvaM yadi dIptimat tiSThati tarhi tubhyaM dIptidAyiprOjjvalan pradIpa iva tava savarvazarIraM dIptimad bhaviSyati|
37 As Jesus finished speaking, a Pharisee asked him to breakfast with him, and Jesus went in and took his place at table.
EtatkathAyAH kathanakAlE phiruzyEkO bhEjanAya taM nimantrayAmAsa, tataH sa gatvA bhOktum upavivEza|
38 The Pharisee noticed, to his astonishment, that Jesus omitted the ceremonial washing before breakfast.
kintu bhOjanAt pUrvvaM nAmAgkSIt Etad dRSTvA sa phiruzyAzcaryyaM mEnE|
39 But the Master said to him: “You Pharisees do, it is true, clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside you yourselves are filled with greed and wickedness.
tadA prabhustaM prOvAca yUyaM phirUzilOkAH pAnapAtrANAM bhOjanapAtrANAnjca bahiH pariSkurutha kintu yuSmAkamanta rdaurAtmyai rduSkriyAbhizca paripUrNaM tiSThati|
40 Fools! did not the maker of the outside make the inside too?
hE sarvvE nirbOdhA yO bahiH sasarja sa Eva kimanta rna sasarja?
41 Only give away what is in them in charity, and at once you have the whole clean.
tata Eva yuSmAbhirantaHkaraNaM (IzvarAya) nivEdyatAM tasmin kRtE yuSmAkaM sarvvANi zucitAM yAsyanti|
42 But alas for you Pharisees! You pay tithes on mint, rue, and herbs of all kinds, and pass over justice and love to God. These last you ought to have put into practice without neglecting the first.
kintu hanta phirUzigaNA yUyaM nyAyam IzvarE prEma ca parityajya pOdinAyA arudAdInAM sarvvESAM zAkAnAnjca dazamAMzAn dattha kintu prathamaM pAlayitvA zESasyAlagghanaM yuSmAkam ucitamAsIt|
43 Alas for you Pharisees! You delight to have the front seat in the Synagogues, and to be greeted in the markets with respect.
hA hA phirUzinO yUyaM bhajanagEhE prOccAsanE ApaNESu ca namaskArESu prIyadhvE|
44 Alas for you! You are like unsuspected graves, over which men walk unawares.”
vata kapaTinO'dhyApakAH phirUzinazca lOkAyat zmazAnam anupalabhya tadupari gacchanti yUyam tAdRgaprakAzitazmazAnavAd bhavatha|
45 Here one of the Students of the Law interrupted him by saying: “Teacher, when you say this, you are insulting us also.”
tadAnIM vyavasthApakAnAm EkA yIzumavadat, hE upadEzaka vAkyEnEdRzEnAsmAsvapi dOSam ArOpayasi|
46 But Jesus went on: “Alas for you, too, you Students of the Law! You load men with loads that are too heavy to carry, but do not, yourselves, touch them with one of your fingers.
tataH sa uvAca, hA hA vyavasthApakA yUyam mAnuSANAm upari duHsahyAn bhArAn nyasyatha kintu svayam EkAggulyApi tAn bhArAn na spRzatha|
47 Alas for you! You build the monuments of the Prophets whom your ancestors killed.
hanta yuSmAkaM pUrvvapuruSA yAn bhaviSyadvAdinO'vadhiSustESAM zmazAnAni yUyaM nirmmAtha|
48 You are actually witnesses to your ancestors’ acts and show your approval of them, because, while they killed the Prophets, you build tombs for them.
tEnaiva yUyaM svapUrvvapuruSANAM karmmANi saMmanyadhvE tadEva sapramANaM kurutha ca, yatastE tAnavadhiSuH yUyaM tESAM zmazAnAni nirmmAtha|
49 That is why the Wisdom of God said — “I will send to them Prophets and Apostles,
ataEva Izvarasya zAstrE prOktamasti tESAmantikE bhaviSyadvAdinaH prEritAMzca prESayiSyAmi tatastE tESAM kAMzcana haniSyanti kAMzcana tAPazSyinti|
50 some of whom they will persecute and kill, in order that the ‘blood’ of all the prophets ‘that has been spilt’ since the creation of the world may be exacted from this generation —
EtasmAt kAraNAt hAbilaH zONitapAtamArabhya mandirayajnjavEdyO rmadhyE hatasya sikhariyasya raktapAtaparyyantaM
51 From the blood of Abel down to the blood of Zechariah, who was slain between the altar and the House of God.” Yes, I tell you, it will be exacted from this generation.
jagataH sRSTimArabhya pRthivyAM bhaviSyadvAdinAM yatiraktapAtA jAtAstatInAm aparAdhadaNPA ESAM varttamAnalOkAnAM bhaviSyanti, yuSmAnahaM nizcitaM vadAmi sarvvE daNPA vaMzasyAsya bhaviSyanti|
52 Alas for you Students of the Law! You have taken away the key of the door of Knowledge. You have not gone in yourselves and you have hindered those who try to go in.”
hA hA vyavasthapakA yUyaM jnjAnasya kunjcikAM hRtvA svayaM na praviSTA yE pravESTunjca prayAsinastAnapi pravESTuM vAritavantaH|
53 When Jesus left the house, the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees began to press him hard and question him closely upon many subjects,
itthaM kathAkathanAd adhyApakAH phirUzinazca satarkAH
54 laying traps for him, so as to seize upon anything that he might say.
santastamapavadituM tasya kathAyA dOSaM dharttamicchantO nAnAkhyAnakathanAya taM pravarttayituM kOpayitunjca prArEbhirE|
