Numbers 32
1 The people of the tribes of Reuben and Gad had much livestock. They saw that the land near Jazer [city] and the Gilead [region east of the Jordan River] had good [grass] for the animals [to graze on].
Or les enfants de Ruben et les enfants de Gad avaient des troupeaux nombreux, considérables; et ils virent le pays de Jazer et le pays de Galaad, et voici, ce lieu était un lieu propre pour le bétail.
2 So their leaders came to Eleazar and the other leaders of the people and Moses/me. They said,
Et les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Ruben vinrent, et parlèrent à Moïse, à Éléazar, le sacrificateur, et aux principaux de l'assemblée, en disant:
3 “We have a great amount of livestock.
Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimra, Hesbon, Élealé, Sebam, Nébo et Beon,
4 Yahweh has enabled us Israelis to capture some land that is very good for animals [to graze on]—the land near Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon [towns].
Ce pays, que l'Éternel a frappé devant l'assemblée d'Israël, est un pays propre pour les troupeaux, et tes serviteurs ont des troupeaux.
5 If it pleases you, we would like this land to be ours, instead of land on the other side of the Jordan River.”
Ils dirent donc: Si nous avons trouvé grâce à tes yeux, que ce pays soit donné en possession à tes serviteurs; ne nous fais point passer le Jourdain.
6 Moses/I replied to the leaders of the tribes of Gad and Reuben, “It is not right for [RHQ] your fellow Israelis to go to fight in wars and you stay here!
Mais Moïse répondit aux enfants de Gad et aux enfants de Ruben: Vos frères iront-ils à la guerre, tandis que vous, vous demeurerez ici?
7 [If you do that], you will cause the other Israelis to be discouraged, with the result that they will not cross [the Jordan River] to the land that Yahweh is giving to them [RHQ].
Pourquoi détourneriez-vous le cœur des enfants d'Israël de passer au pays que l'Éternel leur a donné?
8 Your ancestors did the same kind of thing. I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see what the land [of Canaan] was like.
C'est ainsi que firent vos pères, quand je les envoyai de Kadès-Barnéa pour examiner le pays.
9 They went as far as Eshcol Valley, but when they saw [the huge people in] the land, [they returned and] caused the Israeli people to be discouraged, saying ‘We should not try to enter the land that Yahweh said that he is giving to us.’
Car ils montèrent jusqu'au torrent d'Eshcol, et virent le pays; et ils détournèrent le cœur des enfants d'Israël, pour ne point entrer au pays que l'Éternel leur avait donné.
10 So Yahweh became very angry with them, and he solemnly declared this:
Et la colère de l'Éternel s'enflamma en ce jour-là, et il fit ce serment et dit:
11 ‘From all the people who came out of Egypt, the only ones who are at least 20 years old who will see the land that I promised to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, are Jephunneh’s son Caleb and Nun’s son Joshua, because they trusted me completely. None of the other people who came out of Egypt will even see that land, because they have not completely believed in my [power].’
Les hommes qui sont montés d'Égypte, depuis l'âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, ne verront jamais le pays que j'ai juré de donner à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, car ils n'ont pas pleinement marché après moi;
Excepté Caleb, fils de Jéphunné, le Kenizien, et Josué, fils de Nun, car ils ont suivi pleinement l'Éternel.
13 So Yahweh was angry with the Israeli people, and [as a result] he has caused us to wander in this desert for 40 years. Finally, all the people who had sinned against Yahweh [by refusing to trust him] died, [one by one].
Ainsi la colère de l'Éternel s'enflamma contre Israël; et il les fit errer dans le désert, quarante ans, jusqu'à ce que toute la génération qui avait fait ce qui est mauvais aux yeux de l'Éternel, eût été consumée.
14 And you are acting like your ancestors did! You sinful Israeli people are going to cause Yahweh to be more angry with you [than he was with our ancestors]
Et voici, vous vous êtes levés à la place de vos pères, comme une race d'hommes pécheurs, pour augmenter encore l'ardeur de la colère de l'Éternel contre Israël.
15 If you stop trusting him, he will cause you and all your fellow Israelis to stay longer in the desert, and he will get rid of all of you!”
Car si vous vous détournez de lui, il continuera encore à laisser ce peuple dans le désert, et vous le ferez périr tout entier.
16 Then the [leaders of the tribes of Reuben and Gad] said to Moses/me, “First we will build pens for our animals and build cities for our families here.
Mais ils s'approchèrent de Moïse, et dirent: Nous bâtirons ici des parcs pour nos troupeaux, et des villes pour nos petits enfants;
17 Then our families will live in strong cities with walls around them, and they will be safe from the people who live in this land. Then we will get ready to fight battles. We will help the other Israelis to get land [on the other side of the river].
Puis nous nous équiperons promptement pour marcher devant les enfants d'Israël, jusqu'à ce que nous les ayons fait entrer dans leur lieu; mais nos petits enfants demeureront dans les villes fortes, à cause des habitants du pays.
18 We will not return to our homes until every Israeli has received some land.
Nous ne retournerons point dans nos maisons, que chacun des enfants d'Israël n'ait pris possession de son héritage;
19 We will not take any land on the west side of the Jordan [River]; our land will be here on the east side.”
Et nous ne posséderons rien avec eux au delà du Jourdain ni plus loin, parce que notre héritage nous sera échu de ce côté-ci du Jourdain, à l'Orient.
20 So Moses/I told them, “[Okay, I will tell you] what you all must do. You must get ready to fight battles for Yahweh.
Et Moïse leur dit: Si vous faites cela, si vous vous équipez pour aller au combat devant l'Éternel,
21 You all must cross the Jordan [River] carrying your weapons.
Et que chacun de vous passe, équipé, le Jourdain devant l'Éternel, jusqu'à ce qu'il ait chassé ses ennemis de devant lui,
22 After Yahweh helps us to take that land [from the people who live there], you will be permitted to return to your homes. You will have done what you have promised Yahweh and the Israeli people that you would do, and you may keep this land to be your own, given to you by Yahweh.
Et que le pays soit soumis devant l'Éternel; et qu'ensuite vous vous en retourniez; alors vous serez innocents envers l'Éternel et envers Israël, et ce pays vous appartiendra pour le posséder devant l'Éternel.
23 “But if you do not do these things, you will be sinning against Yahweh, and he will punish you for [that] sin.
Mais si vous n'agissez pas ainsi, voici, vous aurez péché contre l'Éternel, et sachez que votre péché vous trouvera.
24 Now you can build cities for your families and pens for your animals, but after doing that, you must do what you have promised.”
Bâtissez donc des villes pour vos petits enfants, et des parcs pour vos troupeaux, et faites ce que vous avez dit.
25 The leaders of the tribes of Gad and Reuben replied, “We will do what you have asked us to do [MTY], because you are our leader.
Alors les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Ruben parlèrent à Moïse, en disant: Tes serviteurs feront ce que mon seigneur commande.
26 Our wives and children and our cattle and sheep and goats will stay here in the cities in the Gilead area,
Nos petits enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux et tout notre bétail demeureront ici dans les villes de Galaad;
27 but we will prepare to go to battle. We will take our weapons and go across [the Jordan River] and fight for Yahweh, just as you, our leader, have said.”
Et tes serviteurs passeront, tous équipés pour la guerre, devant l'Éternel, prêts à combattre, comme mon seigneur l'a dit.
28 So Moses/I gave instructions about them to Eleazar, Joshua, and the leaders of the Israeli tribes.
Alors Moïse donna des ordres à leur égard à Éléazar, le sacrificateur, à Josué, fils de Nun, et aux chefs de famille des tribus des enfants d'Israël.
29 Moses/I said to them, “If the men from the tribes of Gad and Reuben prepare for battle and cross the Jordan [River] with you, in order to do what Yahweh desires and help you to take that land, give them the Gilead area to belong to them.
Et Moïse leur dit: Si les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Ruben passent avec vous le Jourdain, tous équipés pour le combat devant l'Éternel, et que le pays soit soumis devant vous, vous leur donnerez en possession le pays de Galaad;
30 But if they do not take their weapons and go with you prepared to fight, they will not receive this land. They will need to accept some land in Canaan, like the rest of you will do.”
Mais s'ils ne passent point en armes avec vous, ils auront leur possession parmi vous au pays de Canaan.
31 The [leaders of the tribes of Gad and Reuben] replied, “We will do what you have said and what Yahweh has said.
Et les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Ruben répondirent, en disant: Nous ferons ce que l'Éternel a dit à tes serviteurs;
32 We will cross the river into Canaan land, and we will do what Yahweh desires and be prepared for battle. But our land will be [here] on the east side of the Jordan [River].”
Nous passerons en armes devant l'Éternel au pays de Canaan; mais nous posséderons pour notre héritage ce qui est de ce côté-ci du Jourdain.
33 So Moses/I agreed to give that land to the tribes of Gad and Reuben and to half of the tribe of Joseph’s son Manasseh. That land was previously the land where Sihon, the king of the Amor people-group, ruled, and the land where Og, the king of Bashan [region], ruled, including its cities and surrounding land.
Ainsi Moïse donna aux enfants de Gad et aux enfants de Ruben, et à la moitié de la tribu de Manassé, fils de Joseph, le royaume de Sihon, roi des Amoréens, et le royaume d'Og, roi de Bassan, le pays avec ses villes, avec les territoires des villes du pays tout autour.
34 The people of the tribe of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
Alors les enfants de Gad bâtirent Dibon, Ataroth, Aroër,
35 Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
Atroth-Shophan, Jaezer, Jogbeha,
36 Beth-Nimrah, and Beth-Haran cities. Those were cities with strong walls around them. And they also built pens for their sheep.
Beth-Nimra, et Beth-Haran, villes fortes. Ils firent aussi des parcs pour leurs troupeaux.
37 The people of the tribe of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
Et les enfants de Ruben bâtirent Hesbon, Elealé, Kirjathaïm,
38 Nebo, Baal-Meon, and Sibmah cities. When they rebuilt Nebo and Baal-Meon, they gave new names to those cities.
Nébo, et Baal-Meon, dont les noms furent changés, et Sibma; et ils donnèrent des noms aux villes qu'ils bâtirent.
39 The descendants of Manasseh’s son Makir went to the Gilead [region] and compelled the people of the Amor people-group to leave that area.
Or, les enfants de Makir, fils de Manassé, allèrent en Galaad, et s'en emparèrent, et dépossédèrent les Amoréens qui y étaient.
40 So Moses/I gave Gilead to the family of Makir, and they started to live there.
Moïse donna donc Galaad à Makir, fils de Manassé, qui y habita.
41 Jair, who was also a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured the small towns in that region, and he named them the Towns of Jair.
Et Jaïr, fils de Manassé, alla et prit leurs bourgs, et les appela bourgs de Jaïr.
42 A man named Nobah went and captured Kenath [city] and the nearby towns, and then he put his own name to be the new name of that area.
Et Nobach alla et prit Kenath avec les villes de son ressort, et l'appela Nobach d'après son nom.
