Numbers 32
1 The people of the tribes of Reuben and Gad had much livestock. They saw that the land near Jazer [city] and the Gilead [region east of the Jordan River] had good [grass] for the animals [to graze on].
Les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad avaient une quantité considérable de troupeaux, et ils virent que le pays de Jaezer et le pays de Galaad étaient un lieu propre pour des troupeaux.
2 So their leaders came to Eleazar and the other leaders of the people and Moses/me. They said,
Alors les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben vinrent auprès de Moïse, du sacrificateur Éléazar et des princes de l’assemblée, et ils leur dirent:
3 “We have a great amount of livestock.
Atharoth, Dibon, Jaezer, Nimra, Hesbon, Élealé, Sebam, Nebo et Beon,
4 Yahweh has enabled us Israelis to capture some land that is very good for animals [to graze on]—the land near Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon [towns].
ce pays que l’Éternel a frappé devant l’assemblée d’Israël, est un lieu propre pour des troupeaux, et tes serviteurs ont des troupeaux.
5 If it pleases you, we would like this land to be ours, instead of land on the other side of the Jordan River.”
Ils ajoutèrent: Si nous avons trouvé grâce à tes yeux, que la possession de ce pays soit accordée à tes serviteurs, et ne nous fais point passer le Jourdain.
6 Moses/I replied to the leaders of the tribes of Gad and Reuben, “It is not right for [RHQ] your fellow Israelis to go to fight in wars and you stay here!
Moïse répondit aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Ruben: Vos frères iront-ils à la guerre, et vous, resterez-vous ici?
7 [If you do that], you will cause the other Israelis to be discouraged, with the result that they will not cross [the Jordan River] to the land that Yahweh is giving to them [RHQ].
Pourquoi voulez-vous décourager les enfants d’Israël de passer dans le pays que l’Éternel leur donne?
8 Your ancestors did the same kind of thing. I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see what the land [of Canaan] was like.
Ainsi firent vos pères, quand je les envoyai de Kadès-Barnéa pour examiner le pays.
9 They went as far as Eshcol Valley, but when they saw [the huge people in] the land, [they returned and] caused the Israeli people to be discouraged, saying ‘We should not try to enter the land that Yahweh said that he is giving to us.’
Ils montèrent jusqu’à la vallée d’Eschcol, et, après avoir examiné le pays, ils découragèrent les enfants d’Israël d’aller dans le pays que l’Éternel leur donnait.
10 So Yahweh became very angry with them, and he solemnly declared this:
La colère de l’Éternel s’enflamma ce jour-là, et il jura en disant:
11 ‘From all the people who came out of Egypt, the only ones who are at least 20 years old who will see the land that I promised to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, are Jephunneh’s son Caleb and Nun’s son Joshua, because they trusted me completely. None of the other people who came out of Egypt will even see that land, because they have not completely believed in my [power].’
Ces hommes qui sont montés d’Égypte, depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, ne verront point le pays que j’ai juré de donner à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, car ils n’ont pas suivi pleinement ma voie,
excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunné, le Kenizien, et Josué, fils de Nun, qui ont pleinement suivi la voie de l’Éternel.
13 So Yahweh was angry with the Israeli people, and [as a result] he has caused us to wander in this desert for 40 years. Finally, all the people who had sinned against Yahweh [by refusing to trust him] died, [one by one].
La colère de l’Éternel s’enflamma contre Israël, et il les fit errer dans le désert pendant quarante années, jusqu’à l’anéantissement de toute la génération qui avait fait le mal aux yeux de l’Éternel.
14 And you are acting like your ancestors did! You sinful Israeli people are going to cause Yahweh to be more angry with you [than he was with our ancestors]
Et voici, vous prenez la place de vos pères comme des rejetons d’hommes pécheurs, pour rendre la colère de l’Éternel encore plus ardente contre Israël.
15 If you stop trusting him, he will cause you and all your fellow Israelis to stay longer in the desert, and he will get rid of all of you!”
Car, si vous vous détournez de lui, il continuera de laisser Israël au désert, et vous causerez la perte de tout ce peuple.
16 Then the [leaders of the tribes of Reuben and Gad] said to Moses/me, “First we will build pens for our animals and build cities for our families here.
Ils s’approchèrent de Moïse, et ils dirent: Nous construirons ici des parcs pour nos troupeaux et des villes pour nos petits enfants;
17 Then our families will live in strong cities with walls around them, and they will be safe from the people who live in this land. Then we will get ready to fight battles. We will help the other Israelis to get land [on the other side of the river].
puis nous nous équiperons en hâte pour marcher devant les enfants d’Israël, jusqu’à ce que nous les ayons introduits dans le lieu qui leur est destiné; et nos petits enfants demeureront dans les villes fortes, à cause des habitants du pays.
18 We will not return to our homes until every Israeli has received some land.
Nous ne retournerons point dans nos maisons avant que les enfants d’Israël aient pris possession chacun de son héritage;
19 We will not take any land on the west side of the Jordan [River]; our land will be here on the east side.”
et nous ne posséderons rien avec eux de l’autre côté du Jourdain, ni plus loin, puisque nous aurons notre héritage de ce côté-ci du Jourdain, à l’orient.
20 So Moses/I told them, “[Okay, I will tell you] what you all must do. You must get ready to fight battles for Yahweh.
Moïse leur dit: Si vous faites cela, si vous vous armez pour combattre devant l’Éternel,
21 You all must cross the Jordan [River] carrying your weapons.
si tous ceux de vous qui s’armeront passent le Jourdain devant l’Éternel jusqu’à ce qu’il ait chassé ses ennemis loin de sa face,
22 After Yahweh helps us to take that land [from the people who live there], you will be permitted to return to your homes. You will have done what you have promised Yahweh and the Israeli people that you would do, and you may keep this land to be your own, given to you by Yahweh.
et si vous revenez seulement après que le pays aura été soumis devant l’Éternel, vous serez alors sans reproche vis-à-vis de l’Éternel et vis-à-vis d’Israël, et cette contrée-ci sera votre propriété devant l’Éternel.
23 “But if you do not do these things, you will be sinning against Yahweh, and he will punish you for [that] sin.
Mais si vous ne faites pas ainsi, vous péchez contre l’Éternel; sachez que votre péché vous atteindra.
24 Now you can build cities for your families and pens for your animals, but after doing that, you must do what you have promised.”
Construisez des villes pour vos petits enfants et des parcs pour vos troupeaux, et faites ce que votre bouche a déclaré.
25 The leaders of the tribes of Gad and Reuben replied, “We will do what you have asked us to do [MTY], because you are our leader.
Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben dirent à Moïse: Tes serviteurs feront ce que mon seigneur ordonne.
26 Our wives and children and our cattle and sheep and goats will stay here in the cities in the Gilead area,
Nos petits enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux et tout notre bétail, resteront dans les villes de Galaad;
27 but we will prepare to go to battle. We will take our weapons and go across [the Jordan River] and fight for Yahweh, just as you, our leader, have said.”
et tes serviteurs, tous armés pour la guerre, iront combattre devant l’Éternel, comme dit mon seigneur.
28 So Moses/I gave instructions about them to Eleazar, Joshua, and the leaders of the Israeli tribes.
Moïse donna des ordres à leur sujet au sacrificateur Éléazar, à Josué, fils de Nun, et aux chefs de famille dans les tribus des enfants d’Israël.
29 Moses/I said to them, “If the men from the tribes of Gad and Reuben prepare for battle and cross the Jordan [River] with you, in order to do what Yahweh desires and help you to take that land, give them the Gilead area to belong to them.
Il leur dit: Si les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben passent avec vous le Jourdain, tous armés pour combattre devant l’Éternel, et que le pays soit soumis devant vous, vous leur donnerez en propriété la contrée de Galaad.
30 But if they do not take their weapons and go with you prepared to fight, they will not receive this land. They will need to accept some land in Canaan, like the rest of you will do.”
Mais s’ils ne marchent point en armes avec vous, qu’ils s’établissent au milieu de vous dans le pays de Canaan.
31 The [leaders of the tribes of Gad and Reuben] replied, “We will do what you have said and what Yahweh has said.
Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben répondirent: Nous ferons ce que l’Éternel a dit à tes serviteurs.
32 We will cross the river into Canaan land, and we will do what Yahweh desires and be prepared for battle. But our land will be [here] on the east side of the Jordan [River].”
Nous passerons en armes devant l’Éternel au pays de Canaan; mais que nous possédions notre héritage de ce côté-ci du Jourdain.
33 So Moses/I agreed to give that land to the tribes of Gad and Reuben and to half of the tribe of Joseph’s son Manasseh. That land was previously the land where Sihon, the king of the Amor people-group, ruled, and the land where Og, the king of Bashan [region], ruled, including its cities and surrounding land.
Moïse donna aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Ruben, et à la moitié de la tribu de Manassé, fils de Joseph, le royaume de Sihon, roi des Amoréens, et le royaume d’Og, roi de Basan, le pays avec ses villes, avec les territoires des villes du pays tout alentour.
34 The people of the tribe of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
Les fils de Gad bâtirent Dibon, Atharoth, Aroër,
35 Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
Athroth-Schophan, Jaezer, Jogbeha,
36 Beth-Nimrah, and Beth-Haran cities. Those were cities with strong walls around them. And they also built pens for their sheep.
Beth-Nimra et Beth-Haran, villes fortes, et ils firent des parcs pour les troupeaux.
37 The people of the tribe of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
Les fils de Ruben bâtirent Hesbon, Élealé et Kirjathaïm,
38 Nebo, Baal-Meon, and Sibmah cities. When they rebuilt Nebo and Baal-Meon, they gave new names to those cities.
Nebo et Baal-Meon, dont les noms furent changés, et Sibma, et ils donnèrent des noms aux villes qu’ils bâtirent.
39 The descendants of Manasseh’s son Makir went to the Gilead [region] and compelled the people of the Amor people-group to leave that area.
Les fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, marchèrent contre Galaad, et s’en emparèrent; ils chassèrent les Amoréens qui y étaient.
40 So Moses/I gave Gilead to the family of Makir, and they started to live there.
Moïse donna Galaad à Makir, fils de Manassé, qui s’y établit.
41 Jair, who was also a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured the small towns in that region, and he named them the Towns of Jair.
Jaïr, fils de Manassé, se mit en marche, prit les bourgs, et les appela bourgs de Jaïr.
42 A man named Nobah went and captured Kenath [city] and the nearby towns, and then he put his own name to be the new name of that area.
Nobach se mit en marche, prit Kenath avec les villes de son ressort, et l’appela Nobach, d’après son nom.
