Numbers 14
1 That night, all the Israeli people cried loudly.
Entonces todo el pueblo alzó la voz y dando alaridos se pasó llorando aquella noche.
2 The next day they all complained to Aaron and Moses/me. All the men said, “We wish that we had died in Egypt, or in this desert!
Y todos los hijos de Israel murmuraron contra Moisés y contra Aarón, diciéndoles todo el pueblo: “¡Ojalá hubiéramos muerto en la tierra de Egipto o en este desierto! ¡Ojalá hubiéramos muerto!
3 Why is Yahweh bringing us to this land, where we men will be killed with swords? And our wives and children will be taken away [to be slaves]. [Instead of going to Canaan]. It would be better for us to return to Egypt!”
¿Por qué quiere llevarnos Yahvé a esta tierra para que perezcamos a espada y nuestras mujeres y nuestros hijos vengan a caer en cautividad? ¿No nos sería mejor volver a Egipto?”
4 Then [some of] them said to each other, “We should choose a leader who will take us back to Egypt!”
Y se decían unos a otros: “¡Proclamemos un caudillo y volvámonos a Egipto!”
5 Then Aaron and Moses/I bowed down [to pray] in front of all the Israeli people who had gathered there.
Entonces Moisés y Aarón se postraron rostro en tierra delante de toda la Asamblea del pueblo de los hijos de Israel.
6 Joshua and Caleb, two of the men who had explored the land, tore their clothes [because they were very dismayed].
Y Josué, hijo de Nun, y Caleb, hijo de Jefone, que eran de los que habían explorado el país, rasgaron sus vestidos;
7 They said to the Israeli people, “The land that we explored is very good.
y hablando a todo el pueblo de los hijos de Israel, dijeron: “La tierra que hemos recorrido para explorarla es una tierra muy buena.
8 If Yahweh is pleased with us, he will lead us into that very fertile [IDM] land, and he will give it to us.
Si Yahvé nos es propicio, nos llevará a esa tierra y nos dará aquel país que mana leche y miel,
9 So do not rebel against Yahweh! And do not be afraid of the people in that land! We will (gobble them up/completely destroy them) [MET]! They do not have anyone who will protect them, but Yahweh will be with us [and help us]. So do not be afraid of them!”
con tal que no os rebeléis contra Yahvé, ni temáis al pueblo de esa tierra, pues son pasto nuestro; se hallan sin amparo. Con nosotros está Yahvé; no los temáis.”
10 Then all the Israeli people talked about [killing Caleb and Joshua by] throwing stones at them. But [suddenly] Yahweh’s glory appeared to them at the Sacred Tent.
Cuando ya todo el pueblo hablaba de lapidarlos, se mostró la gloria de Yahvé en el Tabernáculo de la Reunión, a vista de todos los hijos de Israel;
11 Then Yahweh said to Moses/me, “How long will these people reject me [RHQ]? I am tired of them not believing in what I [can do], in spite of all the miracles I have performed among them [RHQ]!
y Yahvé dijo a Moisés: “¿Hasta cuándo me ha de despreciar este pueblo? ¿Y hasta cuándo no creerán en Mí, a pesar de todos los prodigios que he hecho entre ellos?
12 So I will cause a (plague/widespread sickness) to strike them and get rid of them. But I will cause your [descendants] to become a great nation. They will be a nation that is much greater and stronger than these people are.”
Los heriré con peste y les quitaré la herencia, pero de ti haré una nación más grande y más fuerte que ellos.”
13 But Moses/I replied to Yahweh, “[Please do not do that, because] the people of Egypt will hear about it! You brought these Israeli people from Egypt by your great power,
Respondió Moisés a Yahvé: “Pero oirán esto los egipcios, de cuyo poder Tú sacaste con tu potencia a este pueblo;
14 and the people of Egypt will tell that to the [descendants of Canaan] who live in this land. Yahweh, they have already heard about you. They know that you have (been with/helped) these people and that they have seen you face-to-face. They have heard that your cloud is like a huge pillar that stays over them, and by using that cloud you lead them during the day, and the cloud becomes like a fire at night [to give them light].
y se lo dirán a los habitantes de esta tierra. Pues también estos han oído que Tú, oh Yahvé, estás en medio de este pueblo, y que Tú, oh Yahvé, te dejas ver cara a cara, y que tu nube se posa sobre ellos; y que Tú vas a su frente, de día en la columna de nube, y de noche en la columna de fuego.
15 If you kill these people all at one time, the people-groups who have heard about your [power] will say,
Ahora bien, si Tú destruyes a este pueblo, como si fuera un solo hombre, los pueblos que han oído tu fama hablarán, diciendo:
16 ‘Yahweh was not able to bring them into the land that he promised to give to them, so he killed them in the desert.’
Porque Yahvé no ha podido introducir a este pueblo en el país que les había prometido con juramento, por eso los ha destruido en el desierto.
17 “So Yahweh, now show that you are very powerful. You said,
Ahora, pues, sea grande el poder de mi Señor, como Tú mismo declaraste, diciendo:
18 ‘I do not quickly become angry; instead, I love people very much, and I forgive people for having sinned and having disobeyed my laws. But I will always punish [LIT] people who are guilty of doing what is wrong. When parents sin, I will punish them, but I will also punish their children and their grandchildren and their great-grandchildren and their great-great-grandchildren.’
Yahvé tarda en airarse y es rico en misericordia, perdona la iniquidad y el pecado, bien que no lo deja sin castigo, pues castiga la iniquidad de los padres en los hijos hasta la tercera y cuarta generación.
19 So, because you love people like that, forgive these people for the sins that they have committed, just like you have continued to forgive them ever since they left Egypt.”
Perdona, te ruego, la iniquidad de este pueblo según la grandeza de tu misericordia y como lo has soportado desde Egipto hasta aquí.”
20 Then Yahweh replied, “I have forgiven them, as you requested me to.
Respondió Yahvé: “Yo perdono conforme a tu palabra;
21 But, just as certainly as I live and that people all over the world [can see] my (glory/glorious power), [I solemnly declare this: ]
pero juro por mi vida y por mi gloria que llena toda la tierra,
22 All these people saw my glory and all the miracles that I performed in Egypt and in the desert, but they disobeyed me, and many times they tested [whether they could continue to do evil things without my punishing them].
que todos aquellos hombres que han visto mi gloria y los prodigios hechos por Mí en Egipto y en el desierto, y que no obstante ello me han tentado ya diez veces y no han escuchado mi voz,
23 Because of that, not one of them will see the land that I promised their ancestors [that I would give to them]. No one who rejected me will see that land.
no verán la tierra que prometí con juramento a sus padres. Ninguno de los que me han despreciado la verá.
24 But Caleb, who serves me [well], is different from the others. He obeys me completely. So I will bring him into that land that he has already seen, and his descendants will inherit/possess some of it.
Mas a mi siervo Caleb, que ha mostrado otro espíritu siguiéndome enteramente, Yo le introduciré en el país que recorrió, y su descendencia lo poseerá.
25 So, since the descendants of Amalek and Canaan who are living in the valleys [in Canaan are very strong], when you leave here tomorrow, [instead of traveling toward Canaan], go back along the road through the desert towards the Red Sea.”
Y por cuanto los amalecitas y los cananeos habitan en el valle, mudad de rumbo mañana, y partid hacia el desierto, camino del Mar Rojo.”
26 Then Yahweh said to Aaron and Moses/me,
Y habló Yahvé a Moisés y Aarón, diciendo:
27 “How long will the wicked people of this nation keep complaining about me [RHQ]? I have heard everything that they have grumbled/complained against me.
“¿Hasta cuándo ha de murmurar contra Mí este pueblo perverso? He oído las murmuraciones que los hijos de Israel profieren contra Mí.
28 So now tell them this: ‘Just as certainly as I, Yahweh, live, I will do exactly what you said would happen.
Diles: ¡Por mi vida —palabra de Yahvé— que exactamente lo que hablasteis a mis oídos, eso haré Yo con vosotros!
29 [I will cause] all of you to die here in this desert! Because you grumbled about me, none of you who are more than 20 years old and who were counted when Moses counted everyone
En este desierto caerán vuestros cadáveres. Cuantos fuisteis inscritos en el censo, todos los de veinte años para arriba, que habéis murmurado contra Mí,
30 will enter the land that I solemnly promised to give to you. Only Caleb and Joshua will enter that land.
de ninguna manera entraréis en la tierra la cual con juramento prometí daros por habitación, salvo Caleb, hijo de Jefone, y Josué, hijo de Nun.
31 You said that your children would be taken from you [to become slaves], but I will take them into the land, and they will enjoy living in the land that you (rejected/said that you could not conquer).
Pero a vuestros pequeñuelos, de los cuales dijisteis que vendrían a ser presa de otros, a esos los introduciré, y disfrutarán la tierra que vosotros habéis desdeñado.
32 But as for you [adults], you will die here in this desert.
En cuanto a vosotros, en este desierto caerán vuestros cadáveres.
33 And like shepherds [wander around in the desert as they take care of their sheep], your children will wander around in this desert for 40 years. Because you adults were not loyal/faithful to me, your children will suffer until you all die in the desert.
Vuestros hijos andarán errantes por el desierto cuarenta años, llevando vuestras infidelidades hasta que vuestros cadáveres sean consumidos en el desierto.
34 You will suffer for your sins for 40 years. That will be one year for each of the 40 days that the twelve men explored Canaan land. And I will be like an enemy to you.’
A proporción del número de los días que explorasteis la tierra, o sea, cuarenta días, llevaréis vuestras iniquidades cuarenta años, contando año por día; así conoceréis cual es mi aversión.
35 [This will certainly happen because] I, Yahweh, have said it! I will do these things to every one in this group who conspired against me. They (conspired against/decided together to reject) me here in the desert, and they will all die right here in this desert!”
Yo, Yahvé, Yo lo digo: Así haré con este pueblo perverso, que se ha levantado contra Mí. En este desierto se consumirán, ahí morirán.”
36 Then the ten men [who had explored Canaan and] who had urged the people to rebel against Yahweh by giving reports that discouraged the people
En efecto, los hombres que Moisés había enviado a explorar la tierra y que de vuelta hicieron murmurar contra él a todo el pueblo, desacreditando la tierra,
37 were immediately struck with a plague/disease that Yahweh sent, and they died.
aquellos hombres que habían difamado el país, murieron de mala muerte en la presencia de Yahvé.
38 Of the twelve men who had explored Canaan, only Joshua and Caleb remained alive.
De los hombres que habían ido a explorar la tierra quedaron con vida solamente Josué, hijo de Nun, y Caleb, hijo de Jefone.
39 When Moses/I reported to the Israeli people what Yahweh had said, many of them were very sad.
Moisés refirió estas cosas a todos los hijos de Israel, y el pueblo quedó muy afligido.
40 So the people got up early the next morning and started to go toward the hilly area in Canaan. They said, “[We know that] we have sinned, but now we [are ready to] enter the land that Yahweh promised to give to us.”
Se levantaron muy de mañana y subieron a la cima de la montaña, diciendo: “Henos aquí, subiremos al lugar de que habló Yahvé; porque hemos pecado.”
41 But Moses/I said, “Yahweh commanded you [to return to the desert, so] why are you now disobeying him [RHQ]? It will not (succeed/be possible).
Pero Moisés les dijo: “¿Por qué queréis infringir la orden de Yahvé? Esto no puede salir bien.
42 Do not try to enter the land now! [If you try], your enemies will defeat you, because Yahweh will not (be with/help) you.
No subáis, pues Yahvé no está en medio de vosotros; no os dejéis derrotar por vuestros enemigos.
43 When you begin to fight the descendants of Amalek and Canaan, they will slaughter you! Yahweh will abandon you, because you have abandoned him.”
Porque los amalecitas y los cananeos están allá, frente a vosotros, y caeréis a cuchillo. Por cuanto habéis vuelto las espaldas a Yahvé, Él no estará con vosotros.”
44 But even though Moses/I did not leave the camp, and the sacred chest that contained the Ten Commandments was not taken from the camp, the people began to go towards the hilly area in Canaan.
Ellos, empero, se obstinaron en subir a la cima de la montaña; mas ni el Arca de la Alianza de Yahvé ni Moisés salieron del campamento.
45 Then the descendants of Amalek and Canaan who lived in that hilly area came down and attacked them and chased them as far [south] as [the town of] Hormah.
Pero bajaron los amalecitas y los cananeos que habitaban en aquella montaña y derrotándolos los acuchillaron hasta Hormá.
