John 5
1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem when the Jews were having [another] celebration.
Na dezen was er een feest der Joden en Jezus ging naar Jerusalem.
2 At one of the gates [into the city] called the Sheep Gate, there is a pool. In our language we call it Bethzatha. [Around the pool] were five open areas with roofs over them.
In Jerusalem nu is er bij de Schaapspoort een vijver, in ‘t hebreeuwsch genaamd Bethesda, die vijf gaanderijen heeft,
3 Many people were lying there. They were people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed.
waarin lag een menigte van kranken, blinden, kreupelen, lammen, wachtende op de roering des waters;
want een engel daalde op een bepaalden tijd neder in den vijver en roerde het water; die dan het eerst daarin kwam, na de roering van het water, die werd gezond, welke ziekte hij ook had.
5 One of those who was there had been paralyzed for 38 years.
Aldaar nu was een zeker man die acht en dertig jaar krank was.
6 Jesus saw him lying there and found out that the man had been like that for a long time. He said to the man, “Do you want to become well?”
Jezus zag dezen liggen en wetende dat hij al langen tijd zoo was, zeide Hij tot hem: Wilt gij gezond worden?
7 The paralyzed man replied to him, “[Yes], sir, [I want to get well, but] there is no one to help me get down into the pool when the water is stirred {stirs}. While I am trying to get [to the pool], someone else always gets there before me.”
De kranke antwoordde Hem: Heere, ik heb niemand, om mij, als het water geroerd is, in den vijver te werpen; en terwijl ik aankom, gaat er een ander vóór mij daarin!
8 Jesus said to him, “Get up! Then pick up your mat and walk!”
Jezus zeide tot hem: Sta op, neem uw bed op en wandel!
9 The man immediately was healed. He picked up his mat and started walking! The day on which this happened was a Jewish day of rest.
En terstond werd de man gezond en nam zijn bed op en wandelde. En het was sabbat op dien dag.
10 So the Jewish [leaders] said to the man who had been healed, “Today is (the Sabbath/our rest day), and [in our Jewish] laws [it is written that people should not work on our] ([Sabbath/rest day]), so you should not be carrying your mat!”
De Joden dan zeiden tot hem die genezen was: Het is sabbat en het is u niet geoorloofd het bed op te nemen!
11 The man replied to them, “The man who healed me, he himself said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk!’”
Hij antwoordde hun: Die mij gezond gemaakt heeft, die heeft tot mij gezegd: Neem uw bed op en wandel!
12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk!’?”
Zij vroegen hem: Wie is de man die tot u gezegd heeft: Neem uw bed op en wandel?
13 But since Jesus had disappeared in the crowd [without telling the man his name], the man did not know who it was [who had healed him].
Maar de genezene wist niet wie Hij was, want Jezus was de schare ontweken die in die plaats was.
14 Later, Jesus found the man in the Temple [courtyard]. He [told the man his name, and] said to him, “Listen! You are healed! So stop sinning! If you do not stop sinning, something will happen to you that will be worse [than the illness you had before]!”
Naderhand vond Jezus hem in den tempel en zeide tot hem: Zie, gij zijt gezond geworden; zondig niet meer, opdat u niet wat ergers overkome!
15 The man went away and told the Jewish [leaders] [SYN] that it was Jesus who had healed him.
De man ging heen en boodschapte aan de Joden dat het Jezus was die hem gezond had gemaakt.
16 So the Jewish [leaders] [SYN] started to harass Jesus, because Jesus was doing these things (on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day).
En daarom vervolgden de Joden Jezus, omdat Hij dit op een sabbat deed.
17 Then Jesus replied to them, “My Father has always been working every day, [including] ([the Sabbath/the day of rest]), up until now. I am doing the same thing!”
Maar Jezus antwoordde hun: Mijn Vader werkt tot nu toe, en Ik werk ook.
18 The Jewish leaders [SYN] considered that he was disobeying their rules about (the Sabbath/the day of rest), and that by saying that God was his Father, he was making himself equal with God. And they considered that both these things were grounds for killing him. So they tried even harder to find a way to kill him.
Daarom zochten de Joden te meer Hem te dooden, omdat Hij niet alleen den sabbat schond, maar ook God zijn eigen Vader noemde, zich zelven gelijk makende aan God.
19 Jesus replied to them by saying, “You need to know this: I can do nothing by my own [authority]. I do only the [kind of] things that I see [my] Father doing. Whatever kinds of things my Father is doing, those are the things I am doing.
Jezus dan antwoordde en zeide tot hen: Voorwaar, voorwaar Ik zeg ulieden: De Zoon kan niets van zich zelven doen, dan hetgeen Hij den Vader ziet doen; want wat deze doet, dat doet ook de Zoon desgelijks.
20 [My] Father loves me, and he shows me everything that he is doing. He will show me [the miracles] that [he wants me to do] that will be greater than the ones that [you have already seen me do], so that you may be amazed.
Want de Vader bemint den Zoon, en al wat Hij zelf doet toont Hij Hem, en nog grooter werken dan deze zal Hij Hem toonen, opdat gij u verwondert.
21 [For example], just like [my] Father causes people who have died to become alive again, I will give [eternal] life to everyone that I want to.
Want gelijk de Vader de dooden opwekt en levend maakt, zoo maakt ook de Zoon levend die Hij wil.
22 Furthermore, [my] Father is not the one who judges people [concerning their sins]. Instead, he has given to me the work of judging people,
Want ook de Vader oordeelt niemand, maar al het oordeel heeft Hij aan den Zoon gegeven,
23 in order that all people may honor me, just like they honor [my] Father. [My] Father [considers that] anyone who does not honor me is not honoring [him], the one who sent me.
opdat zij allen den Zoon eeren, zooals zij den Vader eeren. Die den Zoon niet eert, die eert den Vader niet die Hem gezonden heeft.
24 Listen to this carefully: Those who hear my message and believe that [God] is the one who sent me have eternal life. [God will] not (condemn them/say that he will punish them). They are no longer separated from God. Instead, they have [eternal] life. (aiōnios g166)
Voorwaar, voorwaar zeg Ik ulieden: Die mijn woord hoort en gelooft in Hem die Mij heeft gezonden, die heeft het eeuwige leven; en in het oordeel komt hij niet, maar hij is overgegaan uit den dood naar het leven. (aiōnios g166)
25 Listen to this carefully: There will be a time when those who are (spiritually dead/separated from God) will hear the voice of me, (the Son of God/the man who is also God). In fact, it is that time already. Those who hear [and pay attention to my message] will have [eternal] life.
Voorwaar, voorwaar zeg Ik ulieden: Er komt een ure en zij is er nu, dat de dooden hooren zullen de stem des Zoons van God, en die gehoord hebben, zullen leven.
26 [My] Father has [power to] make things live. Similarly, he has given me the [power to enable] people to live [eternally].
Want zooals de Vader leven heeft in zich zelven, zoo heeft Hij ook den Zoon gegeven leven in zich zelven te hebben,
27 Because I am the one who came from heaven, he has given me the authority to judge people [concerning their sins].
en heeft Hem macht gegeven om het oordeel te houden, omdat Hij eens menschen zoon is.
28 Do not be surprised about that, because there will be a time when all people who have died will hear my voice,
Zijt daarover niet verwonderd, want er komt een ure waarin allen, die in de graven zijn, zijn stem zullen hooren,
29 and they will become alive again. Those who have lived good [lives] will rise [from their graves] and live forever. But those who have lived evil lives will rise, and I will (condemn them/declare that I will punish them [for their sins]).
en zullen uitgaan, die het goede gedaan hebben, tot de verrijzenis des levens, en die het kwade gedaan hebben, tot de verrijzenis des oordeels,
30 I do not do anything [like that] by my own authority. I judge people only according to what I hear [my Father tell me]. I will judge people fairly, because I do not want to please only myself. Instead, I want to please [my Father], who sent me.
Ik kan niets doen van Mij zelven. Zooals Ik hoor, oordeel Ik, en mijn oordeel is rechtvaardig, omdat Ik niet mijn wil zoek, maar den wil desgenen die Mij gezonden heeft.
31 If I were the [only] one to tell people about myself, [people could rightly say that] what I say is not true.
Indien Ik getuig van Mij zelven, zoo is mijn getuigenis niet waarachtig.
32 But there is someone else who tells people about me. And I know that what he tells people about me is true.
Een ander is er die van Mij getuigt, en Ik weet dat de getuigenis die Hij van Mij getuigt, waarachtig is.
33 As for you, when you sent messengers to John [the Baptizer to ask about me], he told the truth [about me].
Gijlieden hebt gezonden tot Johannes, en hij heeft aan de waarheid getuigenis gegeven.
34 I do not [need that] people tell others [about me]. But instead, I am reminding [you about what John told people about me], in order that you will [believe it and] be saved {[God] will save you}.
Wat Mij aangaat, Ik neem geen getuigenis van een mensch, maar dit zeg Ik opdat gij zoudt behouden worden.
35 [John’s message about me] (OR, [John]) [MET] was [like] a lamp that shines brightly. For a short while you were willing to be made happy [by that message] {to let [that message] make you happy}.
Johannes was de brandende en lichtgevende fakkel, en gij hebt u voor een ure in zijn licht willen verheugen.
36 But there is something else that tells you about me. [It should prove who I am] more than what John [said about me]. The miracles [PRS] that [my] Father told me to do, the miracles that I am performing, show (OR, prove) to people that my Father sent me.
Maar de getuigenis die Ik heb, is meer dan die van Johannes, want de werken die Mij de Vader heeft gegeven om te volbrengen, die werken zelven die Ik doe, getuigen van Mij, dat de Vader Mij gezonden heeft.
37 Furthermore, [my] Father, who sent me, tells people about me. You have never heard his voice or seen him.
En de Vader, die Mij gezonden heeft, die heeft van Mij getuigd. Nooit hebt gij zijn stem gehoord, of zijn gedaante gezien.
38 Furthermore, you have not believed in [me], the one he sent. So you have not [believed] his message in your inner beings.
En zijn woord hebt gij niet in u blijvende, omdat gij Hem niet gelooft, dien Hij gezonden heeft.
39 You carefully study (OR, Study) the Scriptures, because you think that by [studying] them you will [find the way to] have eternal life. And those Scriptures tell people about me! (aiōnios g166)
Gij onderzoekt de Schrifturen, omdat gij daarin eeuwig leven meent te hebben; en die zijn het die van Mij getuigen, (aiōnios g166)
40 But you refuse (to come to me/to believe my message) in order that you may have [eternal] life.
en tot Mij komen wilt gij niet, om het leven te hebben!
41 It does not [matter to] me whether people praise me.
Glorie van menschen neem Ik niet aan.
42 But you [want people to praise you]. I know that within yourselves you do not love God.
Maar Ik ken u, dat gij de liefde Gods niet hebt in u zelven.
43 Although I have come to earth with my Father’s authority [MTY], you do not accept me. But if someone else comes with his own authority [MTY], you accept him!
Ik ben gekomen in den Naam mijns Vaders en gij neemt Mij niet aan; als er een ander komt in zijn eigen naam, dien zult gij aannemen!
44 You accept your praising each other, but you do not try to do things that will result in God himself praising you. So (there is no way you can believe [in me]!/how can you believe [my message]?) [RHQ]
Hoe kunt gijlieden gelooven, gij die glorie van malkander aanneemt, en de glorie, die van den eenigen God komt, zoekt gij niet!
45 But do not think that I am the one who will accuse you while [my] Father is listening! No, it is Moses who will accuse you! You thought that he would [defend you].
Meent niet dat Ik u zal beschuldigen bij den Vader! Er is er een die u beschuldigt, dat is Mozes, op wien gij hoopt.
46 Moses wrote about me, so if you had believed what he [wrote], you would have believed what I [said]
Want zoo gij in Mozes geloofdet, dan zoudt gij ook in Mij gelooven, want van Mij heeft hij geschreven.
47 But because you did not believe what he wrote [about me], (you will certainly not believe what I say!/how will you believe what I say?) [RHQ]”
Maar als gij in zijn schriften niet gelooft, hoe zult gij dan mijn woorden gelooven?
