< Jeremiah 17 >

1 [Yahweh said, “It is as though a list of] the sins [committed by the people of] Judah is engraved with an iron chisel, or engraved using the fine point of a very hard stone, on the altars [where they worship idols]. And [it is as though] this list is engraved on their inner beings!
U A palapalaia ka hewa o ka Iuda, me ka peni hao, me kahi oi hoi o ka daimana; ua kahakahaia hoi ma ka papa o ko lakou naau, a ma na pepeiaohao o ke kuahu;
2 [Even] their children are happy to go to the altars [to worship their gods], and to the poles [that represent the goddess] Asherah [at which their parents worshiped], shrines that are underneath all the big trees and on [all] the high hills.
I ka hoomanao ana o ka lakou keiki i ko lakou kuahu, a me ko lakou ululaau ma na laau uliuli maluna o na puu kiekie.
3 So, I will allow your enemies to capture [Zion], your holy hill, and all your wealth and your (treasures/valuable things), and [even] the shrines on all those hills, because of the sins that you people have committed throughout your land.
E kuu mauna ma ke kula, e haawi no wau i kou waiwai, a me kou ukana a pau i pio, a me kou mau wahi kiekie i hewa, ma kou mau mokuna a pau.
4 The [wonderful] land that I gave to you will no longer belong to you. I will tell your enemies to take you to a land that you do not know about, and you will become their slaves. [I will do that] because I am extremely angry [with you]; my being angry is [like] a fire that will burn forever.”
A o oe, e hele aku no oe, mai kou hooilina aku, ka mea a'u i haawi aku ai ia oe; a e hoolilo aku au ia oe i kauwa na kou poe enemi ma ka aina au i ike ole ai: no ka mea, ua hoa oukou i ke ahi ma kuu ukiuki, a e a mau loa aku no ia.
5 This is [also] what Yahweh says: “[I] will curse/condemn those who trust in human beings [to help them], those who rely on their own strength and turn away from me.
Ke olelo mai nei o Iehova penei, E poino ana ke kanaka i hilinai i ke kanaka, a manao iho la i ka io i ikaika nona, a haalele kona naau ia Iehova.
6 They are like [dry] bushes in the desert, they are people who will not experience any good things. Those people will live in the barren desert in a salty area, where nothing grows.
E like auanei ia me kahi i haaleleia maloko o ka waonahele, aole ia e ike i ka wa e hiki mai ai ka maikai; aka, e noho no oia ma na wahi maloo ma ka waonahele, ma ka aina hua ole, a noho ole ia.
7 But I am pleased with those who trust in [me], Yahweh, and who confidently expect [me to take care of them].
Pomaikai ke kanaka i hilinai aku ia Iehova, a o Iehova hoi kona mea e manaolana'i.
8 Those people are like [SIM] fruit trees that have been planted along a riverbank, trees that have roots that go down into the [wet ground beside] the water. They are trees whose leaves remain green when it becomes hot, trees that continue to bear fruit when there are many months in which there is no rain.
E like auanei ia me ka laau i kanuia ma na wai, a kupu ae la kona mau aa ma kahi mau; aole hoi ia e ike i ka hiki ana mai o ka wela; aka, e uliuli no kona lau; a i ka makahiki wi, aole ia e makau, aole hoi e hooki oia i ka hoohua ana mai i ka hua.
9 Human minds are extremely corrupt/deceitful, and you cannot change that. It is also completely impossible [RHQ] for anyone to understand that.
He hoopunipuni ka naau mamua o na mea a pau, a ua hewa loa hoi ia; owai ka mea hiki ke hoomaopopo?
10 But I, Yahweh, search what is in everyone’s inner being, and I examine what they are thinking. I will give all people rewards, what they deserve for what they have done.”
Owau, o Iehova, ke huli nei au i ka naau, ke hoao nei au i ka opu, e haawi i kela kanaka keia kanaka e like me kona mau aoao, e like hoi me ka hua o kana mau hana.
11 [I, Jeremiah, agree, because I know that] people who become rich by doing things that are unjust are like birds that hatch eggs that they (did not lay/stole from another nest). So, when those people have lived only half of the years [that they expect to live], their wealth will disappear. Then [other people will realize that] those rich people have been foolish.
E like me ka manu aihue i hoopunana i na hua ana i hanau ole ai; pela no ka mea i loaa ka waiwai ma ka pono ole, iwaenakonu o kona mau la, e waiho oia ia mea, a i kona hope, e lapuwale oia.
12 Yahweh, your temple is [like] a glorious throne that is still on a high hill.
He nohoalii nani kiekie loa, mai kinohi mai, oia kahi o ko makou keenakapu.
13 You are the one whom [we] Israeli people confidently expect [to bless us], and all those who turn away from you will be disgraced. Their names will be written [only] in the dust, [and will soon disappear], because they have abandoned you, [who are like] [MET] a fountain where people obtain fresh water.
E Iehova, ka mea e manaolana'i o ka Iseraela, o ka poe a pau e haalele ia oe, e hilahila auanei lakou, a o ka poe e haalele ia'u, e kahakahaia lakou ma ka honua, no ka mea, ua haalele lakou ia Iehova, i ke kumu o na wai ola.
14 Yahweh, [please] heal me, because [if you heal me], I will truly be healed. [If you] rescue me, I will truly be safe, because you are the [only] one whom I praise.
E hoola mai oe ia'u, e Iehova, a e hoolaia mai no wau; e hoopakele mai oe ia'u a e hoopakeleia mai no wau; no ka mea, o oe no ka'u e kaena ai.
15 People often ridicule me and say, “You tell us messages that you say came from Yahweh, but (why have the things that you predicted not happened?/those predictions have not come true!)” [RHQ]
Aia hoi, ke olelo mai nei lakou ia'u, Auhea ka olelo a Iehova? E hele mai ia, ano.
16 Yahweh, you [appointed me to take care of your people like] a shepherd [takes care of his sheep] [MET]; I have not abandoned that work, and you know that I have not [previously] wanted this time of disaster [to come to people who ridicule me]. And you know everything that I have said [MTY] [to your people].
Aole au i hoolalelale ia'u iho mai ka noho kahuhipa ana, e hahai mamuli ou, aole hoi au i makemake ia la kaumaha, ua ike no oe. O ka mea i puka aku iwaho o ko'u mau lehelehe, ua pololei no ia imua ou.
17 Do not cause me to be terrified! When disasters come/occur, you are the one to whom I will go to be safe.
Mai lilo oe i mea makau no'u; o oe no ko'u mea e manaolana'i, i ka la o ka hewa.
18 [So now], cause those who (persecute me/cause me to suffer) to be ashamed and dismayed, but do not [do things to me that will] cause me to be ashamed and dismayed. Cause them to be terrified! Do to them many things that will completely destroy them!
E hoohilahilaia ka poe hoomaau mai ia'u, mai hookuu ia'u i ka hoohilahilaia. E hoopilihua ia lakou, mai hookuu ia'u i ka hoopilihuaia. E lawe mai oe maluna o lakou i ka la o ka hewa, a e luku hoi oe ia lakou i ka luku papalua.
19 This is what Yahweh said to me: “Go to the city gates in Jerusalem. [First] go to the gate where the kings of Judah go in and out of the city, and [then] go to each of the [other] gates.
Ke olelo mai nei o Iehova ia'u penei, O hele, e ku ma ka pukapa o na keiki a ko'u poe kanaka, kahi e komo mai ai na'lii o ka Iuda, ma kahi hoi e puka aku ai lakou iwaho, a ma na pukapa a pau hoi o Ierusalema;
20 Say to the people [at each gate], ‘You kings of Judah and everyone [else] who is living in Jerusalem and all [you other people of] Judah who enter these gates, listen to this message from Yahweh!
A e i aku ia lakou, E hoolohe oukou i ka olelo a Iehova, e na'lii o ka Iuda, a me ka Iuda a pau, a me ka poe a pau e noho ana ma Ierusalema, ka poe komo iloko, ma keia mau pukapa.
21 He says, “Listen to this warning carefully! [Stop doing work] on (Sabbath/our rest) days! Stop carrying loads through these gates [on those days]!
Ke olelo mai nei o Iehova penei, E malama oukou i ko oukou kino iho; mai halihali oukou i ka mea halihali i ka la Sabati, aole hoi e lawe mai iloko, ma na pukapa o Ierusalema.
22 Do not carry loads out of your houses or do any [other] work on Sabbath days! Instead, cause Sabbath days to be (holy/set apart for me). I commanded your ancestors to do that,
Mai lawe aku hoi i ka haawe mawaho aku o ko oukou mau hale i ka la Sabati; mai hana hoi i kekahi hana; aka, e hoano oukou i ka la Sabati, me au i kauoha aku ai i ko oukou poe kupuna.
23 but they did not listen to me or obey me. When I did things to correct them, they stubbornly [IDM] refused to pay attention to what I said or to accept it.
Aole lakou i hoolohe, aole hoi i haliu mai i ko lakou mau pepeiao, aka, hooolea lakou i ko lakou a-i i mea e lohe ole ai lakou, i mea hoi, e loaa ole ai ia lakou ka naauao.
24 But I say that if you obey me, and if you do not carry loads through these gates [on Sabbath days] or do any other work on Sabbath days, and if you dedicate the Sabbath days to me,
A ina e hoolohe pono mai oukou ia'u, wahi a Iehova, a lawe ole i ka mea lawe maloko o na pukapa o ke kulanakauhale i ka la Sabati: aka, hoano oukou i ka la Sabati, a hana ole i kekahi hana ia la;
25 kings of Judah [MTY] and [their] officials will [continue to] go in and out of these gates. There will [always] be someone who is a descendant of [MTY] [King] David ruling [here] [MTY] in Jerusalem. Kings and their officials will go in and out of these gates, riding in chariots and on horses, and there will be people living in this city forever.
Alaila, e komo mai no iloko o na pukapa o keia kulanakauhale, na'lii, a me na luna, e noho ana ma ka nohoalii o Davida, e holo ana hoi maloko o na halekaa, a maluna o na lio, o lakou, a me ko lakou luna, o na kanaka o ka Iuda, a me ka poe noho ma Ierusalema; a e hoomau loa ia aku no keia kulanakauhale.
26 And people will come [to Jerusalem] bringing offerings to be completely burned [on the altar] and [other] offerings. They will bring to the temple grain offerings and incense and offerings to thank [me]. People will bring those offerings from the towns in Judah and the villages near Jerusalem and from the land [where the tribe] of Benjamin [lives] and from the western foothills and from the desert in the south.
A e hele mai no lakou, mai na kulanakauhale o ka Iuda mai, a no na wahi mawaho o Ierusalema a puni, a mai ka aina o Beniamina mai, a mai na papu mai, a mai na mauna mai, a mai ke kukuluhema mai, e lawe ana i na mohnikuni, a me na alana, a me na mohai makana, a me ka mea ala, e lawe ana hoi i na mea aloha, a i ka hale o Iehova.
27 But if you do not pay attention to what I say, and if you refuse to dedicate the Sabbath days to me, and if you [continue to] carry loads through these gates into the city on Sabbath days, I will burn these gates completely. The fire will spread to the palaces, and no one will be able to put out that fire.”’”
