Genesis 39

1 Meanwhile, the descendants of Ishmael took Joseph down to Egypt. There Potiphar bought Joseph from them. Potiphar was an Egyptian who was one of the king’s officials and the captain of the king’s (palace guards/guards who protected the king).

Joseph ward hinab in Ägypten geführet; und Potiphar, ein ägyptischer Mann, des Pharao Kämmerer und Hofmeister, kaufte ihn von den Ismaeliten, die ihn hinabbrachten.

2 Because Yahweh helped Joseph, he was able to do his work very well, and lived in the house of his Egyptian master.

Und der HERR war mit Joseph, daß er ein glückseliger Mann ward; und war in seines HERRN, des Ägypters, Hause.

3 His master saw that Yahweh was helping Joseph and enabling him to be successful in everything that he did.

Und sein HERR sah, daß der HERR mit ihm war; denn alles, was er tat, da gab der HERR Glück zu durch ihn,

4 Joseph’s master was pleased with him, so he appointed him to be his personal servant. Then he appointed him to be the one who would take care of everything in his household and all of his possessions.

also daß er Gnade fand vor seinem HERRN und sein Diener ward. Der setzte ihn über sein Haus, und alles, was er hatte, tat er unter seine Hände.

5 From the time Potiphar appointed Joseph to take care of everything in his household and all that he owned, Yahweh blessed the people who lived in Potiphar’s house because of Joseph. He also caused Potiphar’s crops to grow well.

Und von der Zeit an, da er ihn über sein Haus und alle seine Güter gesetzt hatte, segnete der HERR des Ägypters Haus um Josephs willen, und war eitel Segen des HERRN in allem, was er hatte, zu Hause und zu Felde.

6 Potiphar allowed Joseph to take care of everything that he owned. Potiphar needed to decide only about the food he ate. He was not concerned about anything else in his house. Joseph was well-built/muscular and handsome.

Darum ließ er alles unter Josephs Händen, was er hatte; und er nahm sich keines Dinges an, weil er ihn hatte, denn daß er aß und trank. Und Joseph war schön und hübsch von Angesicht.

7 Because of that, after a while, his master’s wife started to look fondly at Joseph. So one day she said to him, “Have sex [EUP] with me!”

Und es begab sich nach dieser Geschichte, daß seines HERRN Weib ihre Augen auf Joseph warf und sprach: Schlafe bei mir!

8 But he refused, saying to his master’s wife, “Listen! My master is not concerned about anything in this house. He has appointed me to take care of everything that he owns.

Er weigerte sich's aber und sprach zu ihr: Siehe, mein HERR nimmt sich nichts an vor mir, was im Hause ist; und alles, was er hat, das hat er unter meine Hände getan;

9 No one in this household has more authority than I do. The only thing that he has not allowed me to have is you, because you are his wife! So (how could I do this wicked thing [that you are asking me to do]?/I certainly could not do this wicked thing!) [RHQ] I would be sinning against God if I did that!”

und hat nichts so groß in dem Hause, das er vor mir verhohlen habe, ohne dich, indem du sein Weib bist. Wie sollt ich denn nun ein solch groß Übel tun und wider Gott sündigen?

10 She kept on asking Joseph day after day to have sex [EUP] with her, but he refused. He would not even go near her.

Und sie trieb solche Worte gegen Joseph täglich. Aber er gehorchte ihr nicht, daß er nahe bei ihr schlief noch um sie wäre.

11 One day Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the other household servants were in the house.

Es begab sich der Tage einen, daß Joseph in das Haus ging, sein Geschäft zu tun, und war kein Mensch vom Gesinde des Hauses dabei.

12 Potiphar’s wife grabbed his cloak and said, “Have sex [EUP] with me!” Joseph ran out of the house, but his cloak was still in her hand!

Und sie erwischte ihn bei seinem Kleid und sprach: Schlafe bei mir! Aber er ließ das Kleid in ihrer Hand und floh und lief zum Hause hinaus.

13 When she saw that he had run outside leaving his cloak in her hand,

Da sie nun sah, daß er sein Kleid in ihrer Hand ließ und hinaus entfloh,

14 she called the household servants. She said to them, “Look! This Hebrew man that my husband brought to us is (insulting/trying to do something disgraceful to) us! He came into my room and tried to (rape me/make me have sex [EUP] with him), but I screamed loudly.

rief sie dem Gesinde im Hause und sprach zu ihnen: Sehet, er hat uns den ebräischen Mann hereingebracht, daß er uns zuschanden mache. Er kam zu mir herein und wollte bei mir schlafen; ich rief aber mit lauter Stimme.

15 As soon as he heard me scream loudly, he left his loincloth with me and ran outside!”

Und da er hörete, daß ich ein Geschrei machte und rief, da ließ er sein Kleid bei mir und floh und lief hinaus.

16 She kept the loincloth beside her until her husband, Joseph’s master, came home.

Und sie legte sein Kleid neben sich, bis sein HERR heim kam,

17 Then she told him this story: “That Hebrew slave whom you brought here came into my room and tried to rape me!

und sagte zu ihm eben dieselben Worte und sprach: Der ebräische Knecht, den du uns hereingebracht hast, kam zu mir herein und wollte mich zuschanden machen.

18 As soon as I screamed loudly, he ran outside, leaving me holding his loincloth!”

Da ich aber ein Geschrei machte und rief, da ließ er sein Kleid bei mir und floh hinaus.

19 When Joseph’s master heard this story that his wife told him, saying “This is how your slave treated me,” he was very angry.

Als sein HERR hörete die Rede seines Weibes, die sie ihm sagte und sprach: Also hat mir dein Knecht getan, ward er sehr zornig.

20 Joseph’s master took Joseph and put him in prison, the place where all the king’s prisoners were put, and Joseph stayed there.

Da nahm ihn sein HERR und legte ihn ins Gefängnis, da des Königs Gefangene innen lagen; und er lag allda im Gefängnis.

21 But Yahweh was kind to Joseph and helped him, and caused the (prison warden/man who was in charge of the prison) to be pleased with him.

Aber der HERR war mit ihm und neigte seine Huld zu ihm und ließ ihn Gnade finden vor dem Amtmann über das Gefängnis,

22 So the prison warden put Joseph in charge of all those who were in the prison, and in charge of all the work that was done there.

daß er ihm unter seine Hand befahl alle Gefangenen im Gefängnis, auf daß alles, was da geschah, durch ihn geschehen mußte.

23 The warden was not concerned with anything that Joseph was taking care of, because Yahweh helped Joseph to do well everything that he did.

Denn der Amtmann über das Gefängnis nahm sich keines Dinges an; denn der HERR war mit Joseph, und was er tat, da gab der HERR Glück zu.
