Genesis 23
1 When Sarah was 127 years old,
Sarah a vécu cent vingt-sept ans. Telle fut la durée de la vie de Sara.
2 she died at Kiriath-Arba [town], which is now called Hebron, in the Canaan region. After Abraham mourned for her,
Sara mourut à Kiriath Arba (appelée aussi Hébron), dans le pays de Canaan. Abraham vint pour porter le deuil de Sara et pour la pleurer.
3 he left the body of his wife and [went and] spoke to some of the descendants of Heth, saying,
Abraham se leva de devant sa mort et parla aux fils de Heth, en disant:
4 “I am a foreigner [DOU] living among you, [so I do not own any land here]. Sell me some land here so that I can bury my wife’s body.”
« Je suis un étranger et une étrangère qui vit avec vous. Donnez-moi la possession d'un lieu de sépulture chez vous, afin que j'enterre mes morts hors de ma vue. »
5 They replied to him,
Les fils de Heth prirent la parole et dirent à Abraham:
6 “Sir, you are a powerful prince among us. Choose one of our finest tombs and bury your wife’s [body] in it. None of us will refuse to sell land to you for a tomb for your relatives’ bodies.”
« Écoute-nous, mon seigneur. Tu es un prince de Dieu parmi nous. Enterre tes morts dans le meilleur de nos tombeaux. Aucun de nous ne te refusera son tombeau. Enterre tes morts. »
7 Then Abraham stood up and bowed [in respect] in front of the people who owned the land, the descendants of Heth.
Abraham se leva, et se prosterna devant le peuple du pays, devant les fils de Heth.
8 He said to them, “If you say that you are willing for me to bury my wife’s body here, listen to me, and ask Ephron, the son of Zohar for me,
Il leur parla ainsi: « Si vous êtes d'accord pour que j'enterre mes morts hors de ma vue, écoutez-moi, et plaidez pour moi auprès d'Ephron, fils de Zohar,
9 to sell to me the cave in the Machpelah area, which is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price he wants, so that I can have a burial ground among you.”
afin qu'il me vende la grotte de Macpéla qu'il possède, qui est au bout de son champ. Pour le plein prix, qu'il me la vende au milieu de vous comme une possession pour une sépulture. »
10 Ephron was sitting among the people near the city gate where many [HYP] descendants of Heth had gathered. He heard what Abraham said to them.
Or Éphron était assis au milieu des fils de Heth. Ephron, le Hittite, répondit à Abraham en présence des fils de Heth, de tous ceux qui entraient à la porte de sa ville, et dit:
11 [So, just to make the customary reply to start the real discussion about a price], Ephron said, “No, sir, listen to me. I will give to you the field and the cave in it, without charge, with the people here as witnesses.”
« Non, mon seigneur, écoute-moi. Je te donne le champ, et je te donne la grotte qui s'y trouve. En présence des enfants de mon peuple, je te la donne. Enterre tes morts. »
12 Abraham again bowed before the people who lived in the area,
Abraham se prosterna devant le peuple du pays.
13 and said to Ephron, as all the others were listening, “[No], listen to me. If you are willing, I will pay for the field. You tell me what the price is, and I will give it to you. If you accept it, the field will become mine, and I can bury my wife’s body there.”
Il s'adressa à Ephron, en présence du peuple du pays, et dit: « Mais si tu le veux, écoute-moi. Je vais donner le prix du champ. Prends-le de ma part, et j'y enterrerai mes morts. »
14 Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
Ephron prit la parole et dit à Abraham:
15 “Sir, listen to me. The land is worth 400 pieces of silver. But the price is not important to you and me. Give me the money and bury your wife’s body there.”
« Mon seigneur, écoute-moi. Qu'est-ce qu'un morceau de terre valant quatre cents sicles d'argent entre moi et toi? Enterre donc tes morts. »
16 Abraham agreed with Ephron about the price, and weighed for Ephron the 400 pieces of silver he had suggested, as everyone was listening, using the standard weights for silver used [in that area] by people who sold things.
Abraham écouta Ephron. Abraham pesa à Ephron l'argent qu'il avait nommé à l'audition des fils de Heth, quatre cents sicles d'argent, selon l'usage courant des marchands.
17 So Ephron’s field in the Machpelah area, near Mamre, and the cave in the field, and all the trees that were in the field inside the boundaries of the land, became Abraham’s possession.

18 It became Abraham’s property as all the descendants of Heth were listening there at the city gate.

19 After that, Abraham buried his wife Sarah’s body in the cave in the field in the Machpelah area near Mamre, which is now called Hebron [city], in the Canaan region.
Après cela, Abraham enterra Sara, sa femme, dans la caverne du champ de Macpéla, devant Mamré, c'est-à-dire Hébron, au pays de Canaan.
20 So the field and the cave in it were officially sold to Abraham by the descendants of Heth, to be used as a burial ground.
Le champ et la grotte qui s'y trouve ont été cédés à Abraham par les fils de Heth comme une possession pour une sépulture.
