Genesis 11
1 At first, all the people in [MTY] the world spoke the same language [DOU].
Et une seule langue et un seul langage existait sur toute la terre.
2 As people moved further east, they arrived at a plain in Babylonia region and began to live there.
Et il arriva que dans leurs migrations à l'Orient ils rencontrèrent une plaine au pays de Sinear, et ils s'y fixèrent.
3 Then they said to each other, “(Hey/Come on), let’s form bricks and bake them to make them hard, for building!” So they used bricks instead of stones, and used tar instead of (mortar/a mixture of cement, sand and lime) to hold them together.
Et ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: Allons! fabriquons des briques, et nous les ferons cuire. Et les briques leur tinrent lieu de pierres, et l'asphalte leur tint lieu de mortier.
4 They said, “Hey, let’s build a city for ourselves! We also ought to build a very high tower that reaches up to the sky! In that way we will become famous! If we do not do this, we will be scattered all over the earth!”
Et ils dirent: Allons! bâtissons-nous une ville et une tour dont la cime touche au ciel, et faisons-nous un nom, afin que nous ne soyons pas dispersés sur la face de toute la terre.
5 So they began to build the city and the tower. Then Yahweh looked down and saw the city and the tower that those [puny] men were building.
Alors l'Éternel descendit pour voir la ville et la tour que bâtissaient les fils des hommes.
6 Yahweh said, “These people are one group that all speak the same language. If they have begun to do this now, then (there is nothing that they will decide to do that will be impossible for them/they will be able to do whatever they decide to do) [LIT]!
Et l' Éternel dit: Voici, c'est un seul peuple et une seule langue pour eux tous, et c'est le commencement de leur entreprise, et maintenant ils ne seraient entravés dans rien de ce qu'ils projettent d'exécuter.
7 So, okay/now, we will go down there and cause there to be many different languages, so that they will not be able to understand each other.”
Allons! descendons et confondons là leur langage, afin que l'un n'entende plus le langage de l'autre.
8 So Yahweh did that. As a result, the people stopped building the city, and Yahweh caused them to disperse all over the earth.
Et l'Éternel les dispersa ainsi de là sur la face de toute la terre, et ils discontinuèrent de bâtir la ville.
9 The city was called Babel which means ‘confusion’, because there Yahweh caused the people to become confused because the people [MTY] spoke [different languages that the others could not understand], not just one language. From there Yahweh caused them to disperse all over the earth.
C'est pour cela qu'on l'appela du nom de Babel; car c'est là que l'Éternel confondit le langage de toute la terre, et c'est de là que l'Éternel les dispersa sur la face de toute la terre.
10 (This is a bigger list/I will now tell you more) of the descendants of Shem: Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arpachshad.
C'est ici l'histoire de Sem. – Sem était âgé de cent ans lorsqu'il engendra Arphachsad, deux ans après le déluge.
11 After Arpachshad was born, Shem lived 500 more years and had more sons and daughters.
Et après la naissance d'Arphachsad, Sem vécut cinq cents ans et il engendra des fils et des filles.
12 When Arphachshad was 35 years old, he became the father of Shelah.
Et Arphachsad avait trente-cinq ans de vie lorsqu'il engendra Sélach.
13 After Shelah was born, Arpachshad lived 403 more years and became the father of more sons and daughters.
Et après la naissance de Sélach, Arphachsad vécut quatre cent-trois ans, et il engendra des fils et des filles.
14 When Shelah was 30 years old, he became the father of Eber.
Et Selach avait trente ans de vie lorsqu'il engendra Héber.
15 After Eber was born, Shelah lived 403 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
Et après la naissance de Héber, Sélach vécut quatre cent-trois ans, et il engendra des fils et des filles.
16 When Eber was 34 years old, he became the father of Peleg.
Et Héber vécut trente-quatre ans, puis il engendra Péleg.
17 After Peleg was born, Eber lived 430 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
Et après la naissance de Péleg, Héber vécut quatre cent trente ans, et il engendra des fils et des filles.
18 When Peleg was 30 years old, he became the father of Reu.
Et Péleg vécut trente ans, puis il engendra Régu.
19 After Reu was born, Peleg lived 209 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
Et après la naissance de Régu, Péleg vécut deux cent-neuf ans, et il engendra des fils et des filles.
20 When Reu was 32 years old, he became the father of Serug.
Et Régu vécut trente-deux ans, puis il engendra Sérug.
21 After Serug was born, Reu lived 207 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
Et après la naissance de Sérug, Régu vécut deux cent-sept ans, et il engendra des fils et des filles.
22 When Serug was 30 years old, he became the father of Nahor.
Et Sérug vécut trente ans, puis il engendra Nachor.
23 After Nahor was born, Serug lived 200 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
Et après la naissance de Nachor, Sérug vécut deux cents ans, et il engendra des fils et des filles.
24 When Nahor was 29 years old, he became the father of Terah.
Et Nachor vécut vingt-neuf ans, puis il engendra Thérach.
25 After Terah was born, Nahor lived 119 more years and became the father of other sons and daughters.
Et après la naissance de Thérach, Nachor vécut cent dix-neuf ans, et il engendra des fils et des filles.
26 When Terah was 70 years old, his son Abram was born. Later, two other sons, Nahor and Haran were born.
Et Thérach ayant soixante-dix ans de vie engendra Abram, Nachor et Haran.
27 (This is/I will now give) a list of the descendants of Terah: Terah’s sons were Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran’s son was named Lot.
Et c'est ici l'histoire de Thérach. – Thérach engendra Abram, Nachor et Haran, et Haran engendra Lot.
28 Haran died before his father died. He died in Ur [city] in Chaldea land, where he was born.
Et Haran mourut avant Thérach, son père, au pays de sa naissance, à Ur en Chaldée.
29 Abram and Nahor both married. Abram’s wife was named Sarai, and Nahor’s wife was named Milcah. Milcah and her younger sister Iscah were the daughters of Haran.
Et Abram et Nachor prirent femme: le nom de la femme d'Abram était Saraï, et le nom de la femme de Nachor, Milcah, fille de Haran, père de Milcah, et père de Jiscah.
30 Sarai was unable to bear any children.
Or Saraï était stérile, elle était sans enfants.
31 Terah decided to leave Ur and go to live in Canaan land. So he took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and Abram’s wife Sarai with him. But instead of going to Canaan, they stopped at Haran [town] and lived there.
Alors Thérach prit Abram, son fils, et Lot, fils de Haran, fils de son fils, et Saraï, sa bru, femme d'Abram, son fils, et ils émigrèrent l'un avec l'autre d'Ur en Chaldée pour gagner le pays de Canaan; et ils atteignirent Charan, et ils s'y fixèrent.
32 When Terah was 205 years old, he died there in Haran.
Et les jours de Thérach furent deux cent-cinq ans, et Thérach mourut à Charan. –
