Deuteronomy 9
1 “You people of Israel, listen to me! You will soon [HYP] cross the Jordan [River]. In the land that you will enter, there are large cities that have very high walls [around them] that [seem to] [HYP] extend up to the sky. There are people-groups in that land that are more numerous and more powerful than you are.
»Höre, Israel! Du bist jetzt im Begriff, über den Jordan zu ziehen, um dir drüben Völker zu unterwerfen, die größer und stärker sind als du: große und bis an den Himmel befestigte Städte,
2 Those people are very tall and strong. [Some of them] are giants who are descendants of Anak. You know about them, and you have heard people say that no one [RHQ] can defeat the descendants of Anak.
ein großes und hochgewachsenes Volk, die Enakiter, die du selbst schon kennst und von denen du selbst hast sagen hören: ›Wer könnte es mit den Enakitern aufnehmen?‹
3 But I want you to know that Yahweh our God will go ahead of you. He will be like a raging/roaring fire. While you advance, he will defeat and destroy them. As a result, you will quickly be able to expel some of them and kill the others, which is what Yahweh promised that you would do.
So sollst du denn jetzt erkennen, daß der HERR, dein Gott, selbst es ist, der an deiner Spitze als ein verzehrendes Feuer hinüberzieht: er wird sie vernichten, und er wird sie vor dir her niederwerfen, so daß du sie schnell aus ihrem Besitz vertreiben und sie vernichten kannst, wie der HERR es dir verheißen hat.
4 “After Yahweh our God has expelled them for you, do not say to yourselves, ‘It is because we are righteous that Yahweh has enabled us to capture this land.’ The truth is that it is because the people in that land are wicked that Yahweh will expel them as you advance.
Denke nun nicht bei dir selbst, wenn der HERR, dein Gott, sie vor dir her vertreibt: ›Um meines Verdienstes willen hat der HERR mich hierher geführt, damit ich dieses Land in Besitz nehme‹ [während der HERR diese Völkerschaften doch wegen ihrer Verworfenheit vor dir her ausrottet].
5 [I say again that] it is not because you are righteous or because you do things that are righteous that you will enter and capture that land. It is because those people-groups are very wicked that Yahweh our God will expel them as you advance, and because he intends to do what he vowed to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that he would do.
Nicht um deines Verdienstes willen und nicht wegen deines aufrichtigen Herzens gelangst du in den Besitz ihres Landes, sondern der HERR, dein Gott, rottet diese Völkerschaften vor dir her aus wegen ihrer Verworfenheit und auch um die Verheißung zu erfüllen, die der HERR deinen Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob zugeschworen hat.
6 I want you to know that it is not because you are righteous that Yahweh our God is giving you this good/fertile land. I say that because [you are not righteous]; you are a very stubborn [IDM] people.”
Bedenke also wohl, daß der HERR, dein Gott, dir dieses schöne Land nicht um deines Verdienstes willen zum Eigentum gibt; denn du bist ein halsstarriges Volk.«
7 “Never forget what your ancestors did in the desert that caused Yahweh our God to become angry. From the day that we left Egypt until the day that we arrived here, you and your ancestors have continually rebelled against him.
»Denke daran und vergiß es nicht, daß du den HERRN, deinen Gott, in der Wüste erzürnt hast! Von dem Tage an, da ihr aus dem Land Ägypten ausgezogen seid, bis zu eurer Ankunft an diesem Ort habt ihr euch widerspenstig gegen den HERRN gezeigt.
8 Even at Sinai [Mountain] your ancestors caused Yahweh to become angry. Because he was very angry, he was ready to get rid of [all of] them.
Besonders am Horeb habt ihr ihn erzürnt, und der HERR wurde gegen euch so aufgebracht, daß er euch vertilgen wollte.
9 When I climbed the mountain to receive from him the stone tablets on which he had written the Ten Commandments that he was giving to them, I stayed there 40 days and nights, and [during that time] I did not eat or drink anything.
Als ich auf den Berg gestiegen war, um die Steintafeln, die Tafeln des Bundes, den der HERR mit euch geschlossen hatte, in Empfang zu nehmen, da blieb ich vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte auf dem Berge, ohne Brot zu essen und Wasser zu trinken.
10 Yahweh gave me the two stone tablets on which he had written [the commandments] with his own fingers. They were the words/commandments that he had spoken to your ancestors from the fire on that mountain, when they were gathered together [at the bottom of the mountain].
Da übergab der HERR mir die beiden Steintafeln, die vom Finger Gottes beschrieben waren und auf denen alle die Worte standen, die der HERR am Tage der Versammlung an dem Berge aus dem Feuer heraus zu euch geredet hatte.
11 “At the end of those 40 days and nights, Yahweh gave me those two stone tablets on which he had written those commandments.
Als nun der HERR mir damals nach Verlauf von vierzig Tagen und vierzig Nächten die beiden Steintafeln, die Tafeln des Bundes, übergeben hatte,
12 But then he said to me, ‘Go down the mountain immediately, because [the people whom you are leading], the people whom you led out of Egypt, have committed a terrible sin! They have very quickly done what I commanded them not to do. They have made for themselves a metal statue [of a calf to worship].’
sagte der HERR zu mir: ›Auf! Steige schnell von hier hinab, denn dein Volk, das du aus Ägypten hergeführt hast, handelt sündhaft: sie sind schnell von dem Wege abgewichen, den ich ihnen geboten habe; sie haben sich ein gegossenes Bild gemacht.‹
13 Then Yahweh said to me, ‘I have been watching these people, and I see that they are very stubborn.
Dann sagte der HERR weiter zu mir: ›Ich habe dieses Volk beobachtet und erkenne wohl: es ist ein halsstarriges Volk.
14 So do not try to stop me. I am going to destroy all of them, with the result that no one anywhere will remember (their names [MTY]/that they ever existed). Then I will enable you to become [the ancestor of] a nation that will be more numerous and more powerful than they are.’
Laß mich sie nun vertilgen und ihren Namen unter dem Himmel auslöschen! Dich will ich dafür zu einem Volk machen, das stärker und zahlreicher ist als sie.‹
15 So I turned and went down the mountain, carrying in my hands the two stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were [written]. Fire was burning all over the mountain.
Hierauf kehrte ich um und stieg vom Berge hinunter, während der Berg im Feuer brannte und die beiden Bundestafeln in meinen beiden Händen waren.
16 I looked, and I was shocked to see that your ancestors had committed a [great] sin against Yahweh. They very quickly had begun to do what Yahweh our God had commanded them not to do. They had [requested Aaron to] make for them [a metal image of] a calf [to worship].
Da sah ich denn wirklich, daß ihr gegen den HERRN, euren Gott, gesündigt und euch ein gegossenes Stierbild gemacht hattet; ihr wart schnell von dem Wege abgewichen, den der HERR euch geboten hatte.
17 So while they were watching, I lifted up those two stone tablets and threw them [on the ground], and they broke into pieces.
Da faßte ich die beiden Tafeln, schleuderte sie weg aus meinen beiden Händen und zertrümmerte sie vor euren Augen.
18 Then I (prostrated myself/lay) on the ground in Yahweh’s presence as I had done before, and I did not eat or drink anything for 40 days and nights. I did that because your ancestors had sinned against Yahweh and caused him to become very angry.
Darauf aber warf ich mich vor dem HERRN nieder wie das erste Mal, vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte lang, ohne Brot zu essen und Wasser zu trinken, wegen all der Sünden, die ihr begangen hattet, indem ihr etwas tatet, was dem HERRN mißfiel und ihn erzürnen mußte;
19 I was afraid/worried that because Yahweh was very angry with them, he would get rid of all of them. [But again I prayed that he would not do that], and again he listened to me [and answered my prayer].
denn mir war bange vor dem Zorn und Grimm, den der HERR gegen euch hegte, so daß er euch vertilgen wollte. Und der HERR erhörte mich auch diesmal.
20 Yahweh was also very angry with Aaron [for making that golden calf] and was ready to kill Aaron. But at the same time I prayed for Aaron also, [and Yahweh answered my prayer].
Auch gegen Aaron war der HERR heftig erzürnt, so daß er ihn vertilgen wollte; darum legte ich damals auch für Aaron Fürbitte ein.
21 Your ancestors had sinned by [requesting Aaron to] make [a metal statue of] a calf. So I took that statue and [I melted it] in a fire and crushed it and ground it into very tiny pieces [HYP]. Then I threw those tiny pieces into the stream that flowed down the mountain.
Das Machwerk eurer Sünde aber, das Stierbild, das ihr angefertigt hattet, nahm ich und verbrannte es im Feuer, ich zerschlug es in Stücke und zermalmte es, bis es zu feinem Staub geworden war; und diesen Staub warf ich in den Bach, der vom Berge herabfloß.«
22 Your ancestors also caused Yahweh to become very angry [by what they did] at [places which they named] Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth-Hattaavah.
»Auch bei Thabera und Massa und bei den Lustgräbern habt ihr den HERRN immerfort erzürnt;
23 And when we were at Kadesh-Barnea, Yahweh said to your ancestors, ‘Go up and capture the land that I am about to give to you!’ But they rebelled against him. They did not trust him, and they did not obey what he told [MTY] them to do.
und als der HERR euch aus Kades-Barnea aufbrechen hieß mit dem Befehl: ›Zieht hinauf und besetzt das Land, das ich euch bestimmt habe!‹, da habt ihr euch dem Befehl des HERRN, eures Gottes, widersetzt und kein Vertrauen zu ihm gehabt und seiner Weisung nicht gehorcht:
24 Your ancestors rebelled against Yahweh from the first day that I knew them, [in Egypt].
widerspenstig seid ihr gegen den HERRN gewesen, seit ich euch kenne!«
25 So, [as I said], I lay on the ground in Yahweh’s presence for 40 days and nights, because Yahweh had said that he would get rid of your ancestors.
»Als ich nun jene vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte vor dem HERRN am Boden hingestreckt gelegen hatte – denn der HERR hatte es ausgesprochen, daß er euch vertilgen wolle –,
26 And I prayed to Yahweh, saying, ‘Lord God, these people belong to you; do not destroy them. They are people whom you rescued and brought out of Egypt by your very great power. [DOU, MTY]
da betete ich zum HERRN folgendermaßen: ›O HERR, unser Gott! Vernichte nicht dieses Volk und dein Eigentum, das du durch deine große Macht befreit, das du mit starker Hand aus Ägypten herausgeführt hast!
27 Do not forget [what you promised to] Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Please ignore these stubborn and wicked people and the sin that they have committed.
Gedenke an deine Knechte Abraham, Isaak und Jakob! Kehre dich nicht an die Halsstarrigkeit dieses Volkes und an seine Bosheit und Sünde,
28 If you do not do that, [and if you get rid of them], the people of Egypt will [hear about it and] say that you were not able to bring them into the land that you promised to give to them. They will say that you took them into the desert only to kill them there because you hated them.
damit man in dem Lande, aus dem du uns weggeführt hast, nicht sagen kann: Weil der HERR nicht imstande war, sie in das Land zu bringen, das er ihnen zugesagt hatte, und weil er sie haßte, hat er sie hinausgeführt, um sie in der Wüste sterben zu lassen!
29 [Do not forget that] they are your people. [You chose them to] belong to you. You brought them out [from Egypt] by your very great power [DOU, MTY].’”
Sie sind ja doch dein Volk und dein Eigentum, das du mit deiner großen Kraft und deinem hocherhobenen Arm hinausgeführt hast.‹
