2 Kings 10

1 There were seventy descendants of King Ahab who were living there in Samaria. Jehu wrote a letter [and made copies of it] and sent them to the rulers of the city, to the elders, and to those who raised and tutored Ahab’s children.

Or Achab avait soixante-dix fils dans Samarie: Jéhu écrivit donc des lettres, et il les envoya à Samarie aux grands de la ville, aux anciens et à ceux qui élevaient les enfants d’Achab, disant:

2 [This is what he wrote]: “You are the ones who are [taking care of] the king’s descendants. You have chariots and horses and weapons, and you live in cities that have walls around them. So as soon as you receive this letter,

Aussitôt que vous aurez reçu ces lettres, vous qui avez les enfants de votre maître, les chars, les chevaux, les villes fortes et les armes,

3 choose one of the king’s sons, the one who is the best qualified, and appoint him to be your king. Then [prepare to] fight to defend him.”

Choisissez le meilleur et celui qui vous plaira davantage, d’entre les fils de votre maître, et mettez-le sur le trône de son père, et combattez pour la maison de votre maître.

4 But [when they got those letters from Jehu and read them], they became very afraid. They said, “King Joram and King Ahaziah could not resist him; (how can we resist him?/we cannot possibly resist him!)” [RHQ]

Ceux-ci furent saisis d’une grande crainte, et ils dirent: Voilà que deux rois n’ont pu subsister devant lui, et comment nous, pourrons-nous résister?

5 So the officer who was in charge of the palace and the mayor of the city sent a message to Jehu saying, “We want to serve you, and we are ready to do whatever you tell us to do. We will not appoint anyone to become our king. You do whatever you think is best.”

Les intendants de la maison du roi, les chefs de la ville, les anciens et ceux qui élevaient les princes, envoyèrent donc vers Jéhu, disant: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, tout ce que vous nous commanderez, nous le ferons; nous ne nous établirons point de roi: tout ce qu’il vous plaît, faites-le.

6 So Jehu sent a second letter to them, writing this: “If you (are on my side/want to help me), and if you are ready to obey me, [kill] King Ahab’s descendants [and cut off their heads and] bring their heads to me here in Jezreel at this time tomorrow.” The seventy descendants of King Ahab were being brought up and supervised by the leaders of [Samaria] city.

Or il leur écrivit des lettres une seconde fois, disant: Si vous êtes à moi, et que vous vouliez m’obéir, coupez les têtes des fils de votre maître, et venez vers moi à cette même heure demain, à Jezrahel. Or, les fils du roi, soixante-dix individus étaient élevés chez les grands de la ville.

7 When they received the letter from Jehu, they killed all seventy of Ahab’s descendants and [cut off their heads]. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu at Jezreel.

Et lorsque les lettres leur furent parvenues, ils prirent les fils du roi, et tuèrent ces soixante dix individus; ils mirent leurs têtes dans les corbeilles, et les envoyèrent à Jezrahel.

8 A messenger came to Jehu and told him, “They have brought the heads of Ahab’s descendants.” So Jehu commanded that the heads should be put in two piles at the city gate and that the heads should stay there until the next morning.

Or le messager vint et l’annonça à Jéhu, disant: Ils ont apporté les têtes des enfants du roi. Jéhu répondit: Mettez-les en deux tas à l’entrée de la porte jusqu’au matin.

9 The next morning he went out [to the city gate] and said to all the people, “I am the one who plotted against King Joram and killed him. You are not guilty of doing that. But [it was Yahweh, not I] [RHQ] who [commanded that] all these [descendants of Ahab should be] killed.

Et lorsqu’il fit jour, il sortit, et s’arrêtant, il dit à tout le peuple: Vous êtes justes; si c’est moi qui ai conspiré contre mon maître, et si je l’ai tué, qui est celui qui a frappé tous ceux-ci?

10 So you need to know that everything that Yahweh said would happen has happened. He has caused to happen what he told the prophet Elijah would happen.”

Voyez donc maintenant qu’il n’est tombé par terre aucune des paroles du Seigneur, que le Seigneur a prononcées contre la maison d’Achab, et que le Seigneur a fait ce qu’il a dit par l’entremise de son serviteur Élie.

11 Then Jehu executed all the other relatives of Ahab in Jezreel, and all Ahab’s officers, and close friends, and his priests. He did not allow any of them to remain alive.

Jéhu frappa donc tous ceux qui restaient de la maison d’Achab dans Jezrahel, tous les grands de sa cour, ses familiers et ses prêtres, jusqu’à ce qu’il ne demeurât pas de restes de lui.

12 Then Jehu left [Jezreel] and went toward Samaria. While he was going there, at a place called ‘Shepherds’ Camp’,

Et il se leva et il vint à Samarie; et lorsqu’il fut venu près de la Cabane des pasteurs, en son chemin,

13 he met some relatives of King Ahaziah of Judah. He asked them, “Who are you?” They replied, “We are relatives of King Ahaziah. We are going to Jezreel to visit the children of Queen Jezebel and the other members of King [Joram’s] family.”

Il trouva les frères d’Ochozias, roi de Juda, et il leur demanda: Qui êtes-vous? Ceux-ci répondirent: Nous sommes les frères d’Ochozias, et nous sommes descendus pour saluer les fils du roi et les fils de la reine.

14 Jehu said to his men, “Seize them!” So they seized them and killed all of them at the pit named Beth-Eked. There were 42 people whom they killed; they did not allow any of them to remain alive.

Et Jéhu dit: Prenez-les vivants. Et, lorsqu’ils les eurent pris vivants, ils les égorgèrent sur une citerne près de la Cabane, au nombre de quarante-deux hommes, et il n’en resta pas un seul.

15 Then Jehu [continued to travel toward Samaria]. Along the road, he was met by Jonadab, a leader of the Rechab clan. Jehu greeted him and said to him, “Are you as devoted to me [IDM] as I am devoted to you?” Jonadab replied, “Yes, I am.” Jehu said, “If you are, shake hands with me.” So Jonadab shook hands with him, and Jehu helped him to get into his chariot.

Et lorsqu’il fut parti de là, il trouva Jonadab, fils de Réchab, à sa rencontre; et il lui souhaita toute sorte de prospérités. Il lui demanda ensuite: Est-ce que ton cœur est droit, comme mon cœur avec ton cœur? Et Jonadab répondit: m’est. S’il l’est, reprit-il, donne la main. Celui-ci lui donna sa main. Alors Jéhu le fit monter auprès de lui dans son char.

16 Jehu said to him, “Come with me, and you will see that I am very devoted to Yahweh.” So they rode together to Samaria.

Et il lui dit: Viens avec moi, et vois mon zèle pour le Seigneur. Et l’ayant mis dans son char,

17 When they arrived in Samaria, Jehu killed all of Ahab’s relatives who were still alive. He did not (spare any of them/allow any of them to remain alive). That was what Yahweh told Elijah would happen.

Il les conduisit à Samarie. Or il tua tous ceux qui étaient restés d’Achab à Samarie, jusqu’au dernier, selon la parole que le Seigneur avait dite par Elle.

18 Then Jehu summoned all the people [of Samaria], and said to them, “King Ahab was devoted to [your god] Baal a little bit, but I will serve him much more.

Ensuite Jéhu assembla tout le peuple, et il leur dit: Achab a honoré un peu Baal; mais moi je l’honorerai davantage.

19 So now summon all the prophets of Baal, all of Baal’s priests, and all the others who worship Baal. I am going to make a great sacrifice to Baal. I want all of them to be there. Any of them who is not there will be executed.” But Jehu was planning to trick them; he was planning to kill all those who worshiped Baal.

Maintenant donc, appelez vers moi tous les prophètes de Baal, tous ses serviteurs et tous ses prêtres; qu’il n’y en ait aucun qui ne vienne; car c’est un grand sacrifice que je veux faire à Baal: quiconque y manquera, ne vivra plus. Or, Jéhu faisait cela insidieusement pour perdre les adorateurs de Baal;

20 Then Jehu commanded, “Announce that we are going to set aside a day to honor Baal.” So they did that.

Et il dit: Sanctifiez un jour solennel en l’honneur de Baal; et il y invita;

21 Jehu [decided what day they would gather and] sent messages throughout Israel [telling everyone what day to gather on], and on that day, everyone who worshiped Baal came. No one stayed at home. They all went into the huge temple of Baal and filled it from one end to the other.

Il envoya donc dans tous les confins d’Israël, et tous les serviteurs de Baal vinrent, et il ne s’en trouva pas même un seul qui ne vint. Ainsi ils entrèrent dans le temple de Baal; et la maison de Baal fut remplie depuis une extrémité jusqu’à l’autre extrémité.

22 Jehu told the priest who took care of the sacred robes to bring them out and give them to the people who worshiped Baal. So the priest did that.

Il dit ensuite à ceux qui gardaient les vêtements: Apportez des vêtements à tous les serviteurs de Baal. Et ils leur apportèrent des vêtements.

23 Then Jehu went into the temple of Baal with Jonadab, and he said to the people who were there to worship Baal, “Be sure that only those who worship Baal are here. Be sure that no one who worships Yahweh has come in.”

Et Jéhu, étant entré avec Jonadab, fils de Réchab, dans le temple de Baal, dit aux adorateurs de Baal: Cherchez, et voyez que personne parmi vous ne soit des serviteurs du Seigneur; mais qu’il n’y ait que les seuls serviteurs de Baal.

24 Then he and Jonadab prepared to offer sacrifices and other offerings to Baal that would be completely burned [on the altar that was there in Samaria]. But Jehu had stationed eighty of his men outside the temple, and had said to them, “I want you to kill all the people [who are in the temple]. Anyone who allows one of them to escape will be executed!”

Ils entrèrent donc dans le temple pour sacrifier des victimes et des holocaustes: or Jéhu s’était préparé dehors quatre-vingts hommes, et il leur avait dit: Quiconque s’échappera d’entre les hommes que je remettrai moi-même en vos mains, l’âme de celui-ci sera pour l’âme de celui-là.

25 As soon as Jehu [and Jonadab] had finished killing the animals that would be completely burned to be an offering to Baal, they [went outside and] said to the guards and officers, “Go in and kill all of them! Do not allow any of them to escape!” So the guards and officers went in and killed them all with their swords. Then they dragged their corpses outside the temple. Then they went into the inner room of the temple,

Il arriva donc que, lorsque l’holocauste eut été achevé, Jéhu donna cet ordre à ses soldats et à ses officiers: Entrez, tuez, et qu’aucun n’échappe. Et les officiers et les soldats les frappèrent du tranchant du glaive, et les jetèrent dehors; ensuite ils allèrent dans la ville où était le temple de Baal,

26 and they carried out the sacred pillar of Baal that was there, and they burned it.

Et ils enlevèrent la statue de Baal du temple, et ils la brûlèrent,

27 So they destroyed that pillar that honored Baal, and then they burned down the temple, and made it a public toilet. And it is still a toilet!

Et la réduisirent en poudre. Ils détruisirent aussi le temple de Baal, et firent à sa place des latrines qui ont subsisté jusqu’à ce jour.

28 That is how Jehu got rid of the worship of Baal in Israel.

C’est ainsi que Jéhu extermina Baal du milieu d’Israël;

29 But Jehu did not quit committing the kinds of sins that Jeroboam had committed, sins that led the people of Israel to sin by worshiping the gold [statues of] calves in Bethel and Dan [cities].

Mais quant aux péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nabath, qui fit pécher Israël, il ne s’en écarta pas, et il n’abandonna pas les veaux d’or qui étaient à Béthel et à Dan.

30 Then Yahweh said to Jehu, “You have done what pleased me by getting rid of all of Ahab’s descendants. So I promise you that your son and grandson and great-grandson and great-great-grandson will all be kings of Israel.”

Le Seigneur dit donc à Jéhu: Parce que tu as fait avec zèle ce qui était droit et plaisait à mes yeux, et que tout ce qui était en mon cœur, tu l’as fait contre la maison d’Achab, tes enfants, jusqu’à la quatrième génération, seront assis sur le trône d’Israël.

31 But Jehu did not obey all the laws of Yahweh, the God of the Israeli people. He did not stop committing the sins that Jeroboam had committed, sins that led the Israeli people to sin.

Cependant Jéhu n’eut pas soin de marcher dans la loi du Seigneur Dieu d’Israël en tout son cœur, et il ne s’écarta par des péchés de Jéroboam, qui avait fait pécher Israël.

32 At that time, Yahweh began to cause the territory controlled by Israel to become smaller. [The army of] King Hazael [of Syria] conquered much of the Israeli territory.

En ces jours-là, le Seigneur commença à se lasser d’Israël, et Hazaël les battit sur toutes les frontières d’Israël,

33 He conquered the parts east of the Jordan [River], as far south as Aroer [town] on the Arnon [River]. That included [the] Gilead and Bashan [regions], where the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and half of the tribe of Manasseh lived.

Depuis le Jourdain, vers le côté oriental, ruinant toute la terre de Galaad, Gad, Ruben et Manassé, depuis Aroër, qui est sur le torrent d’Arnon, et Galaad, et Basan.

34 [If you want to read more] about all the other things that Jehu did [RHQ], they are written in the scroll called ‘The History of the Kings of Israel’.

Mais le reste des actions de Jéhu, tout ce qu’il a fait, et son courage, n’est-ce pas écrit dans le Livre des actions des jours des rois d’Israël?

35 Jehu died [EUP], and was buried in Samaria. His son Jehoahaz became the king in place of his father.

Et Jéhu dormit avec ses pères, et on l’ensevelit à Samarie, et Joachaz, son fils, régna en sa place.

36 Jehu had ruled in Samaria as the king of Israel for twenty-eight years.

Or les jours durant lesquels Jéhu régna sur Israël, en Samarie, furent de vingt-huit ans.
