1 This is a list of the Israeli men who served the king in the army. Some were leaders of families, some were commanders of 100 men, some were commanders of 1,000 men, and some were their officers. There were 24,000 men [DOU] in each group. Each group served one month of each year.
Now the sons of Israel according to their number, heads of families, captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and scribes ministering to the king, and for every affair of the king according to [their] divisions, [for] every ordinance of coming in and going out monthly, for all the months of the year, one division of them [was] twenty-four thousand.
2 Jashobeam, the son of Zabdiel, was in charge of the group that served during the first month [of each year].
And over the first division of the first month [was] Isboaz the son of Zabdiel: in his division [were] twenty-four thousand.
3 He was a descendant of Perez, and he was the commander of all the army officers during the first month of each year.
Of the sons of Tharez [one] was chief of all the captains of the host for the first month.
4 Dodai, from the clan of Ahohi, was the commander of the group that served during the following/second month of each year. Mikloth was his (assistant/chief officer).
And over the division of the second month [was] Dodia the son of Ecchoc, and over his division [was] Makelloth also chief: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand, chief men of the host.
5 Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the Supreme Priest, was the commander of the group that served during the following/third month.
The third for the third month [was] Banaias the son of Jodae the chief priest: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
6 He was the one who was a mighty warrior among David’s thirty greatest soldiers, and he was their leader. His son Ammizabad was his assistant.
This Banaeas [was] more mighty than the thirty, and over the thirty: and Zabad his son [was] over his division.
7 Asahel, Joab’s [younger] brother, was [the commander of the group that served] during the following/fourth month. Asahel’s son Zebadiah became the commander after Asahel [was killed].
The fourth for the fourth month [was] Asael the brother of Joab, and Zabadias his son, and his brethren: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
8 The commander for the following/fifth month was Shamhuth, a descendant of Izrah.
The fifth chief for the fifth month [was] Samaoth the Jezraite: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
9 The commander for the following/sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh from Tekoa [town].
The sixth for the sixth month [was] Hoduias the son of Ekkes the Thecoite: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
10 The commander for the following/seventh month was Helez, a member of the Pelon [clan] from the tribe of Ephraim.
The seventh for the seventh month [was] Chelles of Phallus of the children of Ephraim: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
11 The commander for the following/eighth month was Sibbecai, a descendant of Zerah from Hushah [town].
The eighth for the eighth month [was] Sobochai the Usathite, [belonging] to Zarai: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
12 The commander for the following/ninth month was Abiezer from Anathoth [city] in the tribe of Benjamin.
The ninth for the ninth month [was] Abiezer of Anathoth, of the land of Benjamin: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
13 The commander for the following/tenth month was Maharai, a descendant of Zerah from Netophath [town].
The tenth for the tenth month [was] Meera the Netophathite, [belonging] to Zarai: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
14 The commander for the following/eleventh month was Benaiah from Pirathon [town] in the tribe of Ephraim.
The eleventh for the eleventh month [was] Banaias of Pharathon, of the sons of Ephraim: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
15 The commander for the last month [of each year] was Heldai, a descendant of Othniel from Netophath [town].
The twelfth for the twelfth month [was] Choldia the Netophathite, [belonging] to Gothoniel: and in his division [were] twenty and four thousand.
16 This is a list of the administrators of the [twelve] tribes [DOU] of Israel: Eliezer, the son of Zicri, was the administrator of the tribe of Reuben. Shephatiah, the son of Maacah, was the administrator of the tribe of Simeon.
And over the tribes of Israel, the chief for Ruben [was] Eliezer the son of Zechri: for Symeon, Saphatias the son of Maacha:
17 Hashabiah, the son of Kemuel, was the administrator of the tribe of Levi. Zadok was the administrator of the tribe of Aaron.
for Levi, Asabias the son of Camuel: for Aaron, Sadoc:
18 Elihu, David’s [older] brother, was the administrator of the tribe of Judah. Omri, the son of Michael, was the administrator of the tribe of Issachar.
for Juda, Eliab of the brethren of David: for Issachar, Ambri the son of Michael:
19 Ishmaiah, the son of Obadiah, was the administrator of the tribe of Zebulun. Jerimoth, the son of Azriel, was the administrator of the tribe of Naphtali.
for Zabulon, Samaeas the son of Abdiu: for Nephthali, Jerimoth the son of Oziel:
20 Hoshea, the son of Azaziah, was the administrator of the tribe of Ephraim. Joel, the son of Pedaiah, was the administrator of the tribe of the [western] half of the tribe of Manasseh.
for Ephraim, Ose the son of Ozia: for the half-tribe of Manasse, Joel the son of Phadaea:
21 Iddo, the son of Zechariah, was the administrator of the [eastern] half of the tribe of Manasseh, in [the] Gilead [region]. Jaasiel, the son of Abner, was the administrator of the tribe of Benjamin.
for the half-tribe of Manasse in the land of Galaad, Jadai the son of Zadaeas, for the sons of Benjamin, Jasiel the son of Abenner:
22 Azarel, the son of Jeroham, was the administrator of the tribe of Dan. Those were the leaders over the tribes of Israel.
for Dan, Azariel the son of Iroab: these [are] the chiefs of the tribes of Israel.
23 [When] David [told Joab to count the men of Israel, he] did not [tell him to] count the men who were less then 20 years old, because Yahweh had promised [many years previously] that there would be as many [people] in Israel as there are stars in the sky.
But David took not their number from twenty years old and under: because the Lord said that he would multiply Israel as the stars of the heaven.
24 Joab [and his helpers] started to count the men of Israel, but they did not finish counting them [because Joab knew that Yahweh was angry about their being counted]. Yahweh punished [MTY] the people of Israel because of this counting, and as a result the total number of Israeli men [able to serve in the army] was not written on the scroll about King David’s [rule].
And Joab the son of Saruia began to number the people, and did not finish the work, for there was hereupon wrath on Israel; and the number was not recorded in the book of the chronicles of king David.
25 Azmaveth, the son of Adiel, was in charge of the king’s storehouses. Jonathan, the son of Uzziah, was is charge of the storehouses in various towns and villages in Israel, and also in charge of the watchtowers.
And over the king's treasures [was] Asmoth the son of Odiel; and over the treasures in the country, and in the towns, and in the villages, and in the towers, [was] Jonathan the son of Ozia.
26 Ezri the son of Kelub was in charge of the workers who farmed the land [that belonged to the king].
And over the husbandmen who tilled the ground [was] Esdri the son of Chelub.
27 Shimei from Ramath [town] was in charge of the king’s vineyards. Zabdi from Shepham [town] was in charge of storing the wine from the [grapes produced in] vineyards.
And over the fields [was] Semei of Rael; and over the treasures of wine in the fields [was] Zabdi the son of Sephni.
28 Baal-Hanan from Geder [city] was in charge of storing the olive oil.
And over the oliveyards, and over the sycamores in the plain country [was] Ballanan the Gedorite; and over the stores of oil [was] Joas.
29 Shitrai from the Sharon Plain was in charge of the herds of cattle that (grazed/ate grass) there. Shaphat the son of Adlai was in charge of the cattle in the valleys.
And over the oxen pasturing in Saron [was] Satrai the Saronite; and over the oxen in the valleys [was] Sophat the son of Adli.
30 Obil, a descendant of Ishmael, was in charge of the camels. Jehdeiah from Meronoth [town] was in charge of the donkeys.
And over the camels [was] Abias the Ismaelite; and over the asses [was] Jadias of Merathon.
31 Jaziz, a descendant of Hagar, was in charge of the [king’s] flocks of sheep. All of those officials were in charge of the things that belonged to King David.
And over the sheep [was] Jaziz the Agarite. All these [were] superintendents of the substance of king David.
32 David’s uncle Jonathan was a wise counselor for him. Jehiel, the son of Hacmoni, taught the king’s sons.
And Jonathan, David's uncle by the father's side, [was] a counsellor, a wise man: and Jeel the son of Achami [was] with the king's sons.
33 Ahithophel was the king’s official counselor.
Achitophel [was] the king's counsellor: and Chusi the chief friend of the king.
34 Hushai from the Ark people-group was the king’s special friend. Benaiah’s son Jehoiada became the king’s advisor after Ahithophel died, and later Abiathar became his advisor. Joab was the chief commander of the army.
And after this Achitophel Jodae the son of Banaeas [came] next, and Abiathar: and Joab [was] the king's commander-in-chief.
