Matthew 5
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the mountain. And when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
Voyant ces multitudes, il gravit la montagne, il y fit sa demeure; ses disciples s'approchèrent de lui;
2 Then he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
et, ouvrant la bouche, il les enseignait, disant:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
«Heureux les pauvres en esprit, parce que le Royaume des cieux est à eux!»
4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
«Heureux ceux qui sont dans l'affliction, parce qu'ils seront consolés!»
5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
«Heureux ceux qui sont doux, parce qu’ils auront la terre en héritage!»
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
«Heureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, parce qu'ils seront rassasiés!»
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
«Heureux les miséricordieux, parce qu'ils obtiendront miséricorde!»
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
«Heureux ceux qui ont le coeur pur, parce qu'ils verront Dieu!»
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
«Heureux les pacifiques, parce qu'ils seront appelés fils de Dieu!»
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
«Heureux ceux qui sont persécutés à cause de la justice, parce que le Royaume des cieux est à eux!»
11 Blessed are you when others reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
«Heureux serez-vous quand on vous outragera et vous persécutera et qu'on dira faussement toute sorte de mal de vous à cause de moi.
12 Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Réjouissez-vous, soyez transportés de joie, parce que votre récompense sera grande dans les cieux; c'est ainsi, en effet, qu'on a persécuté les prophètes qui vous ont précédés.»
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt loses its flavor, with what shall it be seasoned? It is no longer fit for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
«Vous êtes le sel de la terre; si le sel s'affadit, avec quoi lui rendra-t-on sa saveur? Il n'est plus bon à rien, sinon à être jeté dehors et foulé aux pieds par les passants.»
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden,
«Vous êtes la lumière du monde; une ville ne peut être cachée quand elle est située sur une montagne.
15 nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it shines for all who are in the house.
On n'allume pas une lampe pour la mettre sous le boisseau, mais on la met sur le pied-de-lampe et elle luit à tous ceux qui sont dans la maison.
16 Let your light shine before others in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Qu'ainsi votre lumière luise devant les hommes, afin qu'ils voient vos bonnes oeuvres et glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux.»
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.
«Ne pensez pas que je sois venu détruire la Loi ou les Prophètes; je ne suis pas venu pour détruire, mais pour accomplir;
18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter or stroke of a letter will by any means pass from the law until all is accomplished.
car je vous le dis en vérité: jusqu'à ce que le ciel et la terre aient passé, il ne disparaîtra de la Loi, ni la plus petite lettre, ni un seul petit traita qui n'ait reçu sa pleine réalisation.
19 Therefore whoever does away with one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do likewise will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Et celui qui annulera un de ces commandements, même le moindre et enseignera les hommes à le faire, sera réputé le moindre dans le Royaume des cieux; mais celui qui les pratiquera et les enseignera, celui-là sera réputé grand dans le Royaume des cieux.»
20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
«Aussi je vous le dis: Si votre justice n'est pas supérieure à celle des Scribes et des Pharisiens vous n'entrerez point dans le Royaume des cieux.»
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘Yoʋ shall not murder,’ and, ‘Whoever murders will be subject to judgment.’
«Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit aux hommes d'autrefois: «Tu ne tueras point; » celui qui aura tué sera passible du jugement.
22 But I say to you that everyone who is rashly angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Whoever says to his brother, ‘Yoʋ idiot,’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. And whoever says, ‘Yoʋ fool,’ will be subject to the fires of hell. (Geenna g1067)
Eh bien, je vous dis, moi: Quiconque se met en colère contre son frère sera passible du jugement. Celui qui dira à son frère: Raca, sera passible de la justice du Sanhédrin. Celui qui lui dira: fou, sera passible de la Géhenne du feu.» (Geenna g1067)
23 So if yoʋ are offering yoʋr gift at the altar and there remember that yoʋr brother has something against yoʋ,
«Lors donc que tu présentes ton offrande à l'autel et que là tu te souviens que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi,
24 leave yoʋr gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to yoʋr brother, and then come and offer yoʋr gift.
laisse là ton offrande, devant l'autel, et va d'abord te réconcilier avec ton frère; et puis, viens présenter ton offrande.»
25 Make friends with yoʋr adversary quickly while yoʋ are on the way with him, lest yoʋr adversary hand yoʋ over to the judge, and the judge hand yoʋ over to the guard, and yoʋ be thrown into prison.
«Mets-toi d'accord avec ton adversaire, promptement, pendant que tu es encore en chemin avec lui, de peur que cet adversaire ne te livre au juge, et le juge à celui qui exécute ses sentences, et que tu ne sois jeté en prison.
26 Truly I say to yoʋ, yoʋ will certainly not come out of there until yoʋ have paid the last penny.
Tu n'en sortiras pas, je te le dis en vérité, que tu n'aies payé jusqu'au dernier quadrant.»
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Yoʋ shall not commit adultery.’
Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit: «Tu ne commettras point d'adultère»
28 But I say to you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Eh bien, je vous dis, moi: quiconque regarde une femme avec convoitise a déjà, dans son coeur, commis l'adultère avec elle.»
29 So if yoʋr right eye causes yoʋ to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from yoʋ. For it is better for yoʋ to have one of yoʋr members perish, than for yoʋr whole body to be thrown into hell. (Geenna g1067)
«Si ton oeil droit est pour toi une cause de chute, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi. Il vaut mieux pour toi qu'un de tes membres périsse et que ton corps tout entier ne soit pas jeté dans la Géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
30 And if yoʋr right hand causes yoʋ to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from yoʋ. For it is better for yoʋ to have one of yoʋr members perish, than for yoʋr whole body to be thrown into hell. (Geenna g1067)
Et si ta main droite est pour toi une cause de chute, coupe-la et jette-la loin de toi; il vaut mieux pour toi qu'un de tes membres périsse et que ton corps tout entier n'aille pas dans la Géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’
Il a été dit: «Celui qui répudie sa femme doit lui remettre un acte de divorce.»
32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, apart from a matter of fornication, makes her commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Eh bien, je vous dis, moi: quiconque répudie sa femme — excepté pour cause d'infidélité — l'expose à commettre un adultère et celui qui épouse une femme divorcée, commet un adultère.»
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘Yoʋ shall not break an oath, but shall keep yoʋr oaths to the Lord.’
Vous avez encore entendu qu'il a été dit aux hommes d'autrefois: «Tu ne te parjureras pas, mais tu t'acquitteras envers le Seigneur de tes serments.»
34 But I say to you, do not swear at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
Eh bien, je vous dis, moi, de ne prêter aucune sorte de serment; ne jurez point par le ciel, car il est le trône de Dieu;
35 nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
«par la terre», car elle est l'escabeau de ses pieds; «par Jérusalem», car elle est une ville du Grand Roi.
36 Neither shall yoʋ swear by yoʋr head, for yoʋ cannot make one hair white or black.
Ne jure pas non plus «sur ta tête», car tu ne peux faire blanc ou noir un seul de tes cheveux.
37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No’; for whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
Que votre langage soit: oui, oui; ou: non, non. Ce qu'on ajoute vient du Malin.»
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’
Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit: «Oe il pour oeil, dent pour dent.»
39 But I say to you, do not resist one who is evil. Rather, if anyone slaps yoʋ on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Eh bien, je vous dis, moi: ne résistez point au méchant; au contraire, si quelqu'un te frappe à la joue droite, présente-lui aussi l'autre.
40 If anyone wants to sue yoʋ and take away yoʋr tunic, let him have yoʋr cloak also.
Si quelqu'un veut t'appeler en justice et t'enlever ta tunique, abandonne-lui aussi le manteau;
41 And if anyone presses yoʋ into service for one mile, go with him two.
et si quelqu'un veut te faire faire une corvée d'un mille, fais-en deux pour lui.»
42 Give to everyone who asks of yoʋ, and do not turn away from anyone who wants to borrow from yoʋ.
«A qui te demande, donne; de qui veut t'emprunter, ne te détourne pas.»
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Yoʋ shall love yoʋr neighbor and hate yoʋr enemy.’
«Vous avez entendu qu'il a été dit: «Tu aimeras ton prochain et tu haïras ton ennemi.»
44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,
Eh bien, je vous dis, moi: aimez vos ennemis, et priez pour ceux qui vous persécutent,
45 so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
afin que vous deveniez fils de votre Père qui est dans les cieux, car il fait lever son soleil sur les mauvais et sur les bons, et descendre la pluie sur les justes et sur les injustes.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment quelle récompense avez-vous? Les publicains ne le font-ils pas aussi?
47 And if you greet only your friends, what are you doing that is out of the ordinary? Do not even the tax collectors do that?
Et si pour vos frères seuls, vous avez un bon accueil, en quoi dépassez-vous l'ordinaire? Les païens ne le font-ils pas aussi?»
48 You therefore shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
«Soyez donc, vous, parfaits comme votre Père céleste est parfait.»
