< Matthew 22 >
1 Once again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying,
And Jesus resuming his discourse spake unto them again in parables,
2 “The kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son.
saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, who made a wedding-feast for his son;
3 He sent his servants to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come.
and sent his servants to call those that were invited to the wedding: and they would not come.
4 Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and the fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.”’
Then he sent other servants, saying, Tell them that are invited, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready; come to the wedding.
5 But they paid no attention and went away, one to his own field and another to his business.
But they slighted him, and went away, one to his field and another to his merchandize:
6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.
and others seized his servants, and shamefully abused them, and slew them.
7 When the king heard about it, he was furious. So he sent his armies, who destroyed those murderers and burned down their city.
And when the king heard of it, he was highly provoked, and sent his troops, and destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city.
8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.
Then saith he to his servants, The feast is ready, but they that were invited were not worthy of it:
9 Go therefore to where the roads exit the city and invite to the wedding feast anyone you find.’
go therefore into the public streets, and as many as ye meet with invite to the wedding.
10 So the servants went out to the roads and gathered together all whom they found, both evil and good, and the wedding feast was filled with guests.
And those servants went out into the high-ways, and brought in all they met with, both bad and good: and the wedding was filled with guests.
11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who was not clothed with a wedding garment.
But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man that had not put on a wedding-garment, and saith to him,
12 So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did yoʋ come in here without a wedding garment?’ But the man was speechless.
Friend, how camest thou in here without a wedding-garment? and he was struck speechless.
13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind his feet and hands, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Then said the king to his attendants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him up, and throw him out into the darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of the teeth:
14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”
for there are many called, but few approved.
15 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel as to how they might ensnare Jesus in what he said.
Then the pharisees went and consulted how they might insnare Him in his discourse.
16 They sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that yoʋ are true and teach the way of God in truth and defer to no one, for yoʋ do not show partiality.
And they send to Him their disciples along with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art a man of truth, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest for any man; for thou regardest not the person of men: Tell us therefore what thou thinkest,
17 Tell us then, what do yoʋ think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar, or not?
18 But Jesus knew their evil intent and said, “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?
But Jesus knew their malice, and said, Why do ye tempt me, ye hypocrites?
19 Show me the coin for the tax.” So they brought him a denarius.
Shew me the tribute-money. And they brought Him a Roman Penny.
20 Then he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”
And He saith unto them, Whose image and inscription is this?
21 They said to him, “Caesar's.” So he said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.”
They answered, Cesar's. Then saith He unto them, Render therefore to Cesar the things that are Cesar's; and to God the things that are God's.
22 When they heard this, they were amazed. Then they left him and went away.
And when they heard this, they marvelled, and left Him and went away.
23 On that day some Sadducees (who say there is no resurrection) came to Jesus and asked him,
On the same day came the sadducees to Him, who say there is no resurrection,
24 “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.’
and asked Him, saying, Master, Moses said, If any man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up seed unto his brother.
25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother.
Now there were with us seven brothers, and the first married and died, and having no issue left his wife to his brother;
26 The same thing happened to the second and to the third, down to the seventh.
likewise the second also, and the third, even to seven;
27 Last of all, the woman also died.
and last of all the woman died also;
28 In the resurrection, therefore, which of the seven will she be the wife of? For they all had her.”
therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
29 Jesus answered them, “You are in error because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.
But Jesus answered them, Ye are mistaken, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God:
30 For in the resurrection people neither marry nor are they given in marriage. Instead, they are like angels of God in heaven.
for in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels of God in heaven.
31 But as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you:
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read what is spoken to you by God,
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
33 And when the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
And when the people heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
34 Now when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.
But when the pharisees heard that He had silenced the sadducees,
35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked Jesus a question to test him:
they gathered together again, and one of them, an interpreter of the law, propounded a question, to try Him,
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”
and said, Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said to him, “‘Yoʋ shall love the Lord yoʋr God with all yoʋr heart, with all yoʋr soul, and with all yoʋr mind.’
And Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind: this is the first and great command.
38 This is the most important and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it,
39 And a second is like it: ‘Yoʋ shall love yoʋr neighbor as yoʋrself.’
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
On these two precepts depend all the law and the prophets.
41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
Now while the pharisees were thus gathered together, Jesus asked them,
42 “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “David's.”
saying, What think ye of the Messiah? whose son is He? They say unto Him, David's.
43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord,’ saying,
He saith unto them, How then does David by inspiration call Him Lord,
44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand until I make yoʋr enemies a footstool for yoʋr feet”’?
saying, The Lord said unto my Lord, "Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?"
45 If David calls him ‘Lord,’ how is he his son?”
therefore if David call Him Lord, how is He his son?
46 No one was able to say anything in reply, nor did anyone dare to ask him questions anymore from that day forward.
And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor did any dare, from that day, to ask Him any more such questions.
