< Luke 11 >

1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
2 So he said to them, “When you pray, say, ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be yoʋr name. Yoʋr kingdom come. Yoʋr will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
And he said unto them, When all of you pray, say, Our Father which are in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
4 And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’”
And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
5 Then he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and yoʋ go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,
And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
6 for a friend on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him,’
For a friend of mine in his journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?
7 and he answers from inside and says, ‘Do not bother me! The door is already shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up to give yoʋ anything.’
And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give you.
8 I tell you, even if he will not get up and give yoʋ anything because yoʋ are his friend, yet because of yoʋr shameless persistence, he will get up and give yoʋ as much as yoʋ need.
I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needs.
9 So I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and all of you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
10 For everyone who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and for him who knocks, the door will be opened.
For every one that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened.
11 Now what father among you, when his son asks for bread, will give him a stone; or again, when he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent instead of a fish;
If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?
12 or again, if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?
13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
If all of you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit (pneuma) to them that ask him?
14 Now Jesus was casting out a demon that made a certain man mute. When the demon came out, the mute man began to speak, and the crowds were amazed.
And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spoke; and the people wondered.
15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the ruler of demons, he casts out demons.”
But some of them said, He casts out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.
16 Others were asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him.
And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.
17 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a house divided against itself falls.
But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falls.
18 So if Satan is also divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.
If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because all of you say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
19 Now if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.
And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.
20 But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God has come upon you.
21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his possessions are secure.
When a strong man armed keeps his palace, his goods are in peace:
22 But when a stronger man attacks and overpowers him, he takes away all the armor in which the man trusted and then distributes the plunder.
But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he takes from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divides his spoils.
23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathers not with me scatters.
24 “When an unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it goes through waterless places seeking rest. But when it does not find any, it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’
When the unclean spirit (pneuma) is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept and put in order.
And when he comes, he finds it swept and garnished.
26 Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go and dwell there, and the last state of that person becomes worse than the first.”
Then goes he, and takes to him seven other spirits (pneuma) more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.
27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman from among the crowd lifted up her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore yoʋ, and the breasts at which yoʋ nursed.”
And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare you, and the breast which you have sucked.
28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word (logos) of God, and keep it.
29 Now as the crowds were increasing, Jesus began to say, “This generation is evil. It asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.
For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
31 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
32 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a hidden place or under a basket. Instead, it is put on a lampstand, so that those who come in can see its light.
No man, when he has lighted a candle, puts it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
34 The lamp of the body is the eye. So when yoʋr eye is clear, yoʋr whole body is full of light. But when yoʋr eye is bad, yoʋr body is full of darkness.
The light of the body is the eye: therefore when your eye is single, your whole body also is full of light; but when your eye is evil, your body also is full of darkness.
35 Therefore make sure that the light within yoʋ is not darkness.
Take heed therefore that the light which is in you be not darkness.
36 If then yoʋr whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be entirely light, like when a lamp gives yoʋ light with its rays.”
If your whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle does give you light.
37 As Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee invited him to have a meal with him, so Jesus went in and reclined at the table.
And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to food.
38 The Pharisee was amazed when he saw that Jesus did not first perform the ritual washing before the meal.
And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.
39 So the Lord said to him, “You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the platter, but inside you are filled with thoughts of robbery and wickedness.
And the Lord said unto him, Now do all of you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
40 You fools! Did not he who made the outside also make the inside?
All of you fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
41 But give as alms the things that are on the inside, and behold, everything will be clean for you.
But rather give alms of such things as all of you have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
42 “But woe to you, Pharisees! For you tithe mint, rue, and every herb, yet you ignore justice and the love of God. These you ought to have practiced without neglecting the other things.
But woe unto you, Pharisees! for all of you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love (agape) of God: these ought all of you to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
43 Woe to you, Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.
Woe unto you, Pharisees! for all of you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.
44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without realizing it.”
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for all of you are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.
45 In response one of the lawyers said to him, “Teacher, by saying these things, yoʋ insult us as well.”
Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying you reproach us also.
46 But Jesus said, “Woe also to you lawyers! For you burden people with burdens that are hard to bear, but you yourselves do not touch the burdens with even one of your fingers.
And he said, Woe unto you also, all of you lawyers! for all of you load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and all of you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
47 Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, but it was your fathers who killed them.
Woe unto you! for all of you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
48 So you bear witness to and approve of the works of your fathers; for they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.
Truly all of you bear witness that all of you allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and all of you build their sepulchers.
49 That is why the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and some of whom they will persecute.’
Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
50 As a result, this generation will be held accountable for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the foundation of the world,
That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the house of God. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held accountable.
From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
52 Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were trying to enter.”
Woe unto you, lawyers! for all of you have taken away the key of knowledge: all of you entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in all of you hindered.
53 As he was saying these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose him fiercely and to question him closely about many things,
And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:
54 lying in wait for him and seeking to catch him in some word coming out of his mouth, so that they might accuse him.
Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
