< John 3 >
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
Now there was a man of the pharisees, whose name was Nicodemus, a ruler among the Jews:
2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that yoʋ are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that yoʋ are doing unless God is with him.”
who came to Jesus by night, and said unto Him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for none can do these miracles which thou dost, unless God be with him.
3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to yoʋ, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily verily I tell thee, Unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a person be born when he is old? Can he enter the womb of his mother a second time and be born?”
Nicodemus saith unto Him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to yoʋ, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Jesus answered, I tell thee of a truth, Unless a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
That, which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that, which is born of the Spirit, is spirit.
7 Do not be amazed that I said to yoʋ, ‘You must be born again.’
Do not wonder that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind blows where it wishes. Yoʋ hear the sound of it, but yoʋ do not know where it is coming from or where it is going; so it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
As the wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound of it, but knowest not whence it cometh, or whither it goeth; so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 In response Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?”
Nicodemus answered and said unto Him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus answered him, “Yoʋ are the teacher of Israel, and yoʋ do not understand these things?
Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a teacher of Israel and knowest not these things?
11 Truly, truly, I say to yoʋ, we speak of what we know, and we testify about what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.
I assure thee, that we speak what we know, and testify what we have seen; though ye receive not our testimony.
12 If I have spoken to you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I speak to you about heavenly things?
If I have told you earthly things and ye believe not, how will ye believe if I should tell you heavenly ones?
13 No one has ascended into heaven, except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.
For no one hath ascended up into heaven, but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of man who is in heaven.
14 Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (aiōnios )
that whosoever believeth on Him may not perish, but have eternal life. (aiōnios )
16 “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (aiōnios )
For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him might not perish, but have everlasting life: (aiōnios )
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through him.
for God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved by Him.
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.
He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not, is already condemned; because he hath not believed on the name of the only-begotten Son of God.
19 This is the judgment: The light has come into the world, but people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For whoever does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his works may not be exposed.
For every one that doth evil, hateth the light; and he cometh not to the light, least his deeds should be reproved.
21 But whoever lives by the truth comes to the light, so that it may be evident that his works have been done in God.”
But he that acts according to truth, cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
22 After this Jesus went into the Judean countryside along with his disciples, and he spent some time there with them and baptized.
After these things came Jesus, and his disciples into the land of Judea: and He stayed with them there, and baptized.
23 Now John was also baptizing in Aenon near Salem, because there was much water there, and people were coming to him and being baptized.
And John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim; because there was much water there: and people came to him and were baptized.
24 (For John had not yet been thrown into prison.)
For John was not yet cast into prison.
25 Now a discussion arose between the disciples of John and a Jew about purification.
Now there arose a dispute between some of the disciples of John, and the Jews, about purifying.
26 So John's disciples came and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with yoʋ beyond the Jordan, about whom yoʋ have testified, behold, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”
And they came to John, and said unto him, Rabbi, He that was with thee on the other side Jordan, to whom thou barest testimony, behold, He baptizeth and all the people come to Him.
27 John replied, “A person cannot receive anything unless it is given to him from heaven.
John answered and said, A man can take nothing upon him, unless it be given him from heaven.
28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but rather, ‘I have been sent ahead of him.’
Ye your selves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but am sent before Him.
29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom. But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. So this joy of mine has been made full.
He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth with great joy at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore my joy is complete.
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
He must increase, but I must decrease.
31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. But he who comes from heaven is above all.
He, that cometh from above, is above all: he that is of the earth, is earthly, and talketh like one of the earth:
32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.
but He that cometh from heaven, is above all: and what He hath seen and heard, this He testifieth: and yet scarce any one receiveth his testimony.
33 Whoever does receive his testimony has certified that God is true.
He that hath received his testimony, hath set his seal to this, that God is true:
34 For he whom God sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without measure.
for He, whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God: for God giveth the Spirit to Him not by measure.
35 The Father loves the Son and has put all things in his hand.
The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all into his hand:
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life; rather, the wrath of God remains upon him. (aiōnios )
wherefore he that believeth on the Son, hath eternal life; and he that obeyeth not the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him. (aiōnios )
