< John 16 >

1 “I have said these things to you so that you will not fall away.
These things have I spoken unto you, that all of you should not be offended.
2 They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, an hour is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service to God.
They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time comes, that whosoever kills you will think that he does God service.
3 They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me.
And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4 But I have said these things to you so that when the hour comes you will remember that I said them to you. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.
But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, all of you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 “But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are yoʋ going?’
But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asks me, Where go you?
6 Rather, sorrow has filled your hearts because I have said these things to you.
But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow has filled your heart.
7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go, I will send him to you.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment:
And when he has come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;
Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 concerning righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you will no longer see me;
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and all of you see me no more;
11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
I have yet many things to say unto you, but all of you cannot bear them now.
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you what is to come.
Nevertheless when he, the Spirit (pneuma) of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.
14 He will glorify me, for he will receive from me what is mine and declare it to you.
He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.
15 All that the Father has is mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will receive from me what is mine and declare it to you.
All things that the Father has are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you.
16 “In a little while you will not see me; and again after a little while, you will see me, for I am going to the Father.”
A little while, and all of you shall not see me: and again, a little while, and all of you shall see me, because I go to the Father.
17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying to us, ‘In a little while you will not see me; and again after a little while, you will see me,’ and, ‘for I am going to the Father’?”
Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he says unto us, A little while, and all of you shall not see me: and again, a little while, and all of you shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
18 So they kept saying, “What does he mean by saying, ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.”
They said therefore, What is this that he says, A little while? we cannot tell what he says.
19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while, you will not see me; and again after a little while, you will see me’?
Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do all of you enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and all of you shall not see me: and again, a little while, and all of you shall see me?
20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, That all of you shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and all of you shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21 When a woman is giving birth, she has pain because her hour has come. But when her baby is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
A woman when she is in travail has sorrow, because her hour has come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembers no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22 So you also have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.
And all of you now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man takes from you.
23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name he will give you.
And in that day all of you shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever all of you shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be full.
Until now have all of you asked nothing in my name: ask, and all of you shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25 “I have told you these things in figures of speech, but an hour is coming when I will no longer use figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father.
These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time comes, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly of the Father.
26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf,
At that day all of you shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God.
For the Father himself loves you, because all of you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said to him, “Behold, now yoʋ are speaking plainly and not using any figure of speech.
His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speak you plainly, and speak no proverb.
30 Now we know that yoʋ know all things and have no need for anyone to question yoʋ; because of this we believe that yoʋ came from God.”
Now are we sure that you know all things, and need not that any man should ask you: by this we believe that you came forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, “Now do you believe?
Jesus answered them, Do all of you now believe?
32 Behold, an hour is coming, and has now come, when you will be scattered, each to yoʋr own home, and will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
Behold, the hour comes, yea, is now come, that all of you shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 I have said these things to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world.”
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me all of you might have peace. In the world all of you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
