< John 12 >

1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, the man who had died and whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
Ὁ οὖν Ἰησοῦς πρὸ ἓξ ἡμερῶν τοῦ πάσχα ἦλθεν εἰς Βηθανίαν, ὅπου ἦν Λάζαρος (ὁ τεθνηκώς *KO*) ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν (ὁ *o*) (Ἰησοῦς. *NO*)
2 They prepared a supper for Jesus there. Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of the people reclining at the table with him.
ἐποίησαν οὖν αὐτῷ δεῖπνον ἐκεῖ, καὶ ἡ Μάρθα διηκόνει· ὁ δὲ Λάζαρος εἷς ἦν (ἐκ *no*) τῶν (ἀνακειμένων *N(K)O*) (σὺν *N(k)O*) αὐτῷ.
3 Then Mary took a pound of expensive ointment made of pure nard, anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.
ἡ οὖν Μαριὰμ λαβοῦσα λίτραν μύρου νάρδου πιστικῆς πολυτίμου ἤλειψεν τοὺς πόδας τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἐξέμαξεν ταῖς θριξὶν αὐτῆς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ· ἡ δὲ οἰκία ἐπληρώθη ἐκ τῆς ὀσμῆς τοῦ μύρου.
4 Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who was about to betray him, said,
λέγει (δὲ *N(k)O*) Ἰούδας (Σίμωνος *K*) (ὁ *no*) Ἰσκαριώτης εἷς ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ, ὁ μέλλων αὐτὸν παραδιδόναι·
5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?”
διὰ τί τοῦτο τὸ μύρον οὐκ ἐπράθη τριακοσίων δηναρίων καὶ ἐδόθη πτωχοῖς;
6 (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he was the keeper of the moneybag and would pilfer what was put into it.)
εἶπεν δὲ τοῦτο οὐχ ὅτι περὶ τῶν πτωχῶν ἔμελεν αὐτῷ, ἀλλ᾽ ὅτι κλέπτης ἦν καὶ τὸ γλωσσόκομον (ἔχων *N(k)O*) (καὶ *k*) τὰ βαλλόμενα ἐβάσταζεν.
7 So Jesus said, “Leave her alone; she has kept this ointment for the day of my burial.
Εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἄφες αὐτήν, (ἵνα *NO*) εἰς τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ ἐνταφιασμοῦ μου (τηρήσῃ *N(k)O*) αὐτό·
8 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.”
τοὺς πτωχοὺς γὰρ πάντοτε ἔχετε μεθ᾽ ἑαυτῶν, ἐμὲ δὲ οὐ πάντοτε ἔχετε.
9 Meanwhile a large crowd of the Jews found out that Jesus was there, so they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
Ἔγνω οὖν (ὁ *no*) ὄχλος πολὺς ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐκεῖ ἐστιν, καὶ ἦλθον οὐ διὰ τὸν Ἰησοῦν μόνον ἀλλ᾽ ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἴδωσιν ὃν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν.
10 So the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus also,
ἐβουλεύσαντο δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς ἵνα καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον ἀποκτείνωσιν,
11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.
ὅτι πολλοὶ δι᾽ αὐτὸν ὑπῆγον τῶν Ἰουδαίων καὶ ἐπίστευον εἰς τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
12 On the next day, when a large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
Τῇ ἐπαύριον (ὁ *no*) ὄχλος πολὺς ὁ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν, ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἔρχεται ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα,
13 they took palm branches and went out to meet him. They were crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!”
ἔλαβον τὰ βαΐα τῶν φοινίκων καὶ ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν αὐτῷ καὶ (ἐκραύγαζον· *N(k)O*) ὡσαννά, εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου (καὶ *no*) ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ.
14 Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, just as it is written,
Εὑρὼν δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὀνάριον ἐκάθισεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτό, καθώς ἐστιν γεγραμμένον·
15 “Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Behold, yoʋr king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt.”
μὴ φοβοῦ θυγάτηρ Σιών· ἰδοὺ ὁ βασιλεύς σου ἔρχεται καθήμενος ἐπὶ πῶλον ὄνου.
16 (His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, they remembered that these things were written about him, and that these things had been done to him.)
ταῦτα (δὲ *k*) οὐκ ἔγνωσαν αὐτοῦ οἱ μαθηταὶ τὸ πρῶτον, ἀλλ᾽ ὅτε ἐδοξάσθη (ὁ *k*) Ἰησοῦς, τότε ἐμνήσθησαν ὅτι ταῦτα ἦν ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ γεγραμμένα καὶ ταῦτα ἐποίησαν αὐτῷ.
17 Now the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead was testifying about it.
Ἐμαρτύρει οὖν ὁ ὄχλος ὁ ὢν μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ, ὅτε τὸν Λάζαρον ἐφώνησεν ἐκ τοῦ μνημείου καὶ ἤγειρεν αὐτὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν.
18 That is why a crowd went out to meet him, because they heard he had done this sign.
διὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος, ὅτι (ἤκουσαν *N(k)O*) τοῦτο αὐτὸν πεποιηκέναι τὸ σημεῖον.
19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are achieving nothing. Behold, the world has gone after him.”
Οἱ οὖν Φαρισαῖοι εἶπαν πρὸς ἑαυτούς· θεωρεῖτε ὅτι οὐκ ὠφελεῖτε οὐδέν; ἴδε ὁ κόσμος (ὅλος *O*) ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἀπῆλθεν.
20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.
Ἦσαν δὲ Ἕλληνές τινες ἐκ τῶν ἀναβαινόντων ἵνα προσκυνήσωσιν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ.
21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and requested of him, “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.”
οὗτοι οὖν προσῆλθον Φιλίππῳ τῷ ἀπὸ Βηθσαϊδὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν λέγοντες· κύριε, θέλομεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδεῖν.
22 Philip went and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
ἔρχεται (ὁ *no*) Φίλιππος καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἀνδρέᾳ, (καὶ πάλιν *k*) (ἔρχεται *no*) Ἀνδρέας καὶ Φίλιππος (καὶ *no*) λέγουσιν τῷ Ἰησοῦ.
23 Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς (ἀποκρίνεται *N(k)O*) αὐτοῖς λέγων· ἐλήλυθεν ἡ ὥρα ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν· ἐὰν μὴ ὁ κόκκος τοῦ σίτου πεσὼν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἀποθάνῃ, αὐτὸς μόνος μένει· ἐὰν δὲ ἀποθάνῃ, πολὺν καρπὸν φέρει.
25 Whoever loves his life will lose it, but whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
ὁ φιλῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ (ἀπολλύει *N(k)O*) αὐτήν, καὶ ὁ μισῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ τούτῳ εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον φυλάξει αὐτήν. (aiōnios g166)
26 If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.”
Ἐὰν ἐμοί τις διακονῇ, ἐμοὶ ἀκολουθείτω· καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγώ, ἐκεῖ καὶ ὁ διάκονος ὁ ἐμὸς ἔσται. (καὶ *k*) ἐάν τις ἐμοὶ διακονῇ, τιμήσει αὐτὸν ὁ πατήρ.
27 “My soul is now troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.
Νῦν ἡ ψυχή μου τετάρακται, καὶ τί εἴπω; πάτερ, σῶσόν με ἐκ τῆς ὥρας ταύτης; ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ὥραν ταύτην.
28 Father, glorify yoʋr name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
πάτερ, δόξασόν σου τὸ ὄνομα. ἦλθεν οὖν φωνὴ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ· καὶ ἐδόξασα καὶ πάλιν δοξάσω.
29 When the crowd standing there heard the voice, they said it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”
ὁ οὖν ὄχλος ὁ ἑστὼς καὶ ἀκούσας ἔλεγεν βροντὴν γεγονέναι. ἄλλοι ἔλεγον· ἄγγελος αὐτῷ λελάληκεν.
30 Jesus responded, “This voice has come not for my sake, but for your sake.
Ἀπεκρίθη (ὁ *k*) Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν· οὐ δι᾽ ἐμὲ ἡ φωνὴ αὕτη γέγονεν ἀλλὰ δι᾽ ὑμᾶς.
31 Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
νῦν κρίσις ἐστὶν τοῦ κόσμου τούτου· νῦν ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἐκβληθήσεται ἔξω,
32 And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people to myself.”
κἀγὼ κἀγὼ (ἐὰν *NK(o)*) ὑψωθῶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς, πάντας ἑλκύσω πρὸς ἐμαυτόν.
33 (He said this to indicate the kind of death he was going to die.)
τοῦτο δὲ ἔλεγεν σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ ἤμελλεν ἀποθνῄσκειν.
34 The crowd responded to him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever, so how can yoʋ say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?” (aiōn g165)
Ἀπεκρίθη (οὖν *NO*) αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος· ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι ὁ χριστὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, καὶ πῶς λέγεις σὺ ὅτι δεῖ ὑψωθῆναι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου; τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου; (aiōn g165)
35 Jesus said to them, “The light is with you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness will not overtake you. He who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἔτι μικρὸν χρόνον τὸ φῶς (ἐν ὑμῖν *N(k)O*) ἐστιν. περιπατεῖτε (ὡς *N(k)O*) τὸ φῶς ἔχετε, ἵνα μὴ σκοτία ὑμᾶς καταλάβῃ· καὶ ὁ περιπατῶν ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ οὐκ οἶδεν ποῦ ὑπάγει.
36 While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you will become sons of light.” After saying these things, Jesus went away and was hidden from them.
(ὡς *N(k)O*) τὸ φῶς ἔχετε, πιστεύετε εἰς τὸ φῶς, ἵνα υἱοὶ φωτὸς γένησθε. ταῦτα ἐλάλησεν (ὁ *k*) Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἐκρύβη ἀπ᾽ αὐτῶν.
37 Although he had done so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him.
Τοσαῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ σημεῖα πεποιηκότος ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν,
38 This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
ἵνα ὁ λόγος Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου πληρωθῇ ὃν εἶπεν· κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν; καὶ ὁ βραχίων κυρίου τίνι ἀπεκαλύφθη;
39 For this reason they could not believe, for again Isaiah said,
διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ ἠδύναντο πιστεύειν, ὅτι πάλιν εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας·
40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they should see with their eyes and understand with their hearts and turn back, and I would heal them.”
τετύφλωκεν αὐτῶν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς καὶ (ἐπώρωσεν *N(k)O*) αὐτῶν τὴν καρδίαν, ἵνα μὴ ἴδωσιν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς καὶ νοήσωσιν τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ (στραφῶσιν *N(k)O*) καὶ (ἰάσομαι *N(k)O*) αὐτούς.
41 Isaiah said these things when he saw the Lord's glory and spoke about him.
Ταῦτα εἶπεν Ἠσαΐας (ὅτι *N(K)O*) εἶδεν τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλησεν περὶ αὐτοῦ.
42 Nevertheless, many even among the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they would not declare it openly, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.
ὅμως μέντοι καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν, ἀλλὰ διὰ τοὺς Φαρισαίους οὐχ ὡμολόγουν, ἵνα μὴ ἀποσυνάγωγοι γένωνται.
43 For they loved the glory that comes from men more than the glory that comes from God.
ἠγάπησαν γὰρ τὴν δόξαν τῶν ἀνθρώπων μᾶλλον ἤπερ τὴν δόξαν τοῦ θεοῦ.
44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me.
Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἔκραξεν καὶ εἶπεν· ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ οὐ πιστεύει εἰς ἐμὲ ἀλλ᾽ εἰς τὸν πέμψαντά με·
45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.
καὶ ὁ θεωρῶν ἐμὲ θεωρεῖ τὸν πέμψαντά με.
46 I have come into the world as light, so that no one who believes in me will remain in darkness.
ἐγὼ φῶς εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἐλήλυθα, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ μὴ μείνῃ.
47 If anyone hears my words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.
καὶ ἐάν τίς μου ἀκούσῃ τῶν ῥημάτων καὶ μὴ (φυλάξῃ, *N(k)O*) ἐγὼ οὐ κρίνω αὐτόν· οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον ἵνα κρίνω τὸν κόσμον ἀλλ᾽ ἵνα σώσω τὸν κόσμον.
48 He who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word I have spoken will judge him on the last day.
ὁ ἀθετῶν ἐμὲ καὶ μὴ λαμβάνων τὰ ῥήματά μου ἔχει τὸν κρίνοντα αὐτόν· ὁ λόγος ὃν ἐλάλησα, ἐκεῖνος κρινεῖ αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ.
49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me gave me a commandment as to what I should say and what I should speak.
ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐξ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλάλησα, ἀλλ᾽ ὁ πέμψας με πατήρ, αὐτός μοι ἐντολὴν (δέδωκεν *N(k)O*) τί εἴπω καὶ τί λαλήσω.
50 And I know that his commandment leads to eternal life. What I speak, therefore, I speak just as the Father has told me.” (aiōnios g166)
καὶ οἶδα ὅτι ἡ ἐντολὴ αὐτοῦ ζωὴ αἰώνιός ἐστιν. ἃ οὖν ἐγὼ λαλῶ, καθὼς εἴρηκέν μοι ὁ πατήρ, οὕτως λαλῶ. (aiōnios g166)
