< Galatians 2 >

1 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also.
Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.
2 I went up in response to a revelation and presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those who were held in high esteem, to make sure that I was not running or had not run in vain.
And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
3 But not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he is a Greek.
But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:
4 Now this matter arose because of the false brothers who were secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might enslave us.
And that because of false brethren unexpectedly brought in, who came in privately to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:
5 But we did not yield to them in submission for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.
To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
6 Now from those who were esteemed to be something (what sort of men they once were makes no difference to me; God does not show partiality)—those, I say, who were held in high esteem added nothing to me.
But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it makes no matter to me: God accepts no man's person: ) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:
7 On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised.
But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;
8 For he who worked through Peter in his apostleship to the circumcised also worked through me in my apostleship to the Gentiles.
(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles: )
9 When James, Cephas, and John, who were esteemed as pillars of the church, recognized the grace given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and that they should go to the circumcised.
And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.
10 They only asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.
11 But when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was blameworthy.
But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
12 For he regularly ate with the Gentiles until certain men came from James. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself because he was afraid of the circumcision faction.
For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.
13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.
And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.
14 But when I saw that they were not walking uprightly in accordance with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, “If yoʋ, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, why do yoʋ compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If you, being a Jew, live after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compell you the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
15 We who are Jews by nature and not Gentile sinners
We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,
16 know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. So we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by works of the law.
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
17 But if we ourselves have also been found to be sinners while seeking to be justified in Christ, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not!
But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.
18 For if I build up again the very things that I tore down, I show myself to be a transgressor.
For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
19 For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.
For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.
20 I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. The life that I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
