< Acts 5 >

1 Now a man named Ananias, along with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
2 and kept back some of the proceeds, with his wife also being aware of it. He brought a portion of the proceeds and laid it at the apostles' feet.
and kept back part of the price, and his wife was conscious of it; and he brought a certain part of it, and laid it at the feet of the apostles.
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled yoʋr heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back some of the proceeds of the plot of land?
But Peter said: Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart, that you should attempt to deceive the Holy Spirit, and keep back part of the price of the land?
4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain yoʋrs? And once it was sold, was it not under yoʋr control? How is it that yoʋ have put this thing in yoʋr heart? Yoʋ have not lied to men but to God.”
While it remained unsold, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your own disposal? Why have you purposed this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.
5 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last breath. And great fear came upon all who heard about it.
And when Ananias heard these words, he fell down, and expired. And great fear came on all that heard these things.
6 Then the young men rose, wrapped up his body, carried him out, and buried him.
And the young men arose and wound him in his mantle, and carried him out, and buried him.
7 About three hours later, his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
And after an interval of about three hours, his wife, not knowing what had been done, came in.
8 Peter said to her, “Tell me if you sold the plot of land for such and such a price.” She said, “Yes, for such a price.”
And Peter answered her: Tell me, did you sell the land for so much? She replied: Yes; for so much.
9 Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Behold, the feet of those who buried yoʋr husband are at the door, and they will carry yoʋ out.”
But Peter said to her: Why is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you out.
10 At once she fell down at his feet and breathed her last breath. When the young men came in, they found her dead, so they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
And she immediately fell down at his feet, and expired. And the young men came in and found her dead; and they carried her out, and buried her by the side of her husband.
11 And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard these things.
And great fear came on all the church, and on all that heard these things.
12 Now many signs and wonders were taking place among the people by the hands of the apostles, and all the believers were together with one accord in Solomon's portico.
And many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the apostles; (and they were all with one consent in Solomon’s porch.
13 No one else dared to join them, but the people held them in high regard.
And no one of the rest durst join himself to them; but the people magnified them.
14 Yet more and more people believed in the Lord and were added to their number, a multitude of both men and women.
And believers in the Lord were more and more added to them, multitudes both of men and women; )
15 As a result, people carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and mats, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on one of them.
so that they brought the sick out along the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that even the shadow of Peter, as he passed along, might fall on some of them.
16 A multitude from the towns all around Jerusalem also gathered together, bringing the sick and those harassed by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
And many people of the cities round about came to Jerusalem, bringing the sick, and those who were troubled by evil spirits, all of whom were cured.
17 Then the high priest rose up, along with all who were with him (that is, the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy.
But the chief priest arose, and all that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees, ) and were filled with indignation;
18 So they arrested the apostles and put them in a public jail.
and they laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the public prison.
19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, brought them out, and said,
But an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison by night, and brought them out, and said:
20 “Go stand in the temple courts and tell the people everything about this new life.”
Go, stand in the temple, and speak to the people all the words of this life.
21 When they heard this, they entered the temple courts at dawn and began teaching. When the high priest came, along with those who were with him, they called together the Sanhedrin—that is, the entire eldership of the people of Israel—and sent officers to the prison to have the apostles brought before them.
And having heard this, they entered the temple, early in the morning, and taught. But the chief priest, and those who were with him, came and called together the Sanhedrim, and all the eldership of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
22 But when the officers arrived, they did not find them in the prison. So they returned and reported,
But when the attendants came, and found them not in the prison, they returned and reported,
23 “We found the prison locked up in complete security and the guards standing in front of the doors, but when we opened the doors, we found no one inside.”
saying: We found the prison closed with all safety, and the guards standing before the doors; but when we had opened, we found no one within.
24 When the high priest, the captain of the temple guard, and the chief priests heard this report, they were greatly perplexed by it, wondering what might come of this.
When the priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were in doubt about them, what this could mean.
25 Then someone came and told them, “Behold, the men you put in prison are standing in the temple courts teaching the people!”
And some one came and reported to them: Behold, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people.
26 So the captain went with the officers and brought the apostles without the use of force, for they were afraid the people might stone them.
Then went the captain with the attendants, and brought them without violence; for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.
27 After bringing the apostles in, they had them stand before the Sanhedrin, and the high priest asked them,
And when they had brought them, they made them stand before the Sanhedrim; and the chief priest asked them,
28 “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? Yet behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you are determined to bring the blood of this man upon us.”
saying: Did we not strictly charge you not to teach in this name? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
But Peter and the apostles answered and said: We must obey God rather than men.
30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you murdered by hanging him on a cross.
The God of our fathers has raised up Jesus, whom you slew by hanging him on a tree.
31 God exalted him to his right hand as Leader and Savior to grant repentance to Israel and remission of sins.
Him has God exalted to his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior, in order to give to Israel repentance and remission of sins:
32 Concerning these things we are his witnesses, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
and we are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit also, whom God has given to them that obey him.
33 When they heard this, they were furious and resolved to put them to death,
And when they heard this, they were enraged; and they determined to put them to death.
34 but a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was held in honor by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and gave orders to put the apostles outside for a little while.
Then arose a certain man in the Sanhedrim, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people; and he commanded them to put the apostles out for a little while,
35 Then he said to the Sanhedrin, “Men of Israel, give careful consideration to what you are about to do to these men.
and said to them: Men of Israel, consider well with yourselves what you are about to do to these men.
36 For before these days Theudas rose up, declaring himself to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, responded to the call to join him. He was put to death, and all his followers were scattered and came to nothing.
For before these days Theudas arose, declaring himself to be some great one; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves; and he was slain; and all, as many as believed him, were scattered and brought to naught.
37 After this man, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all his followers were scattered.
After this man, Judas the Galilean arose, in the days of the enrollment, and drew over many people after him; and he was destroyed, and all, as many as believed him, were scattered.
38 So I say to you now, keep away from these men and leave them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of men, it will be stopped;
And now I say to you, keep away from these men, and let them alone; for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to an end;
39 but if it is of God, you cannot put a stop to it. You will only find yourselves fighting against God.”
but if it is of God, you can not bring it to an end: and take heed, lest you be found fighting also against God.
40 They were persuaded by him, and after calling in the apostles, they beat them, commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.
And they were persuaded by him; and when they had called the apostles in and scourged them, they commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 So the apostles went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the name of Jesus.
Then, they went from the presence of the Sanhedrim, rejoicing that they were thought worthy to suffer shame for his name’s sake.
42 And every day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching the good news that Jesus is the Christ.
And daily in the temple, and from house to house, they ceased not to teach and to preach Jesus the Christ.
