< 1 Timothy 1 >
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ according to the command of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ our hope,
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and Christ Jesus our hope;
2 to Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
to Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 Just as I urged yoʋ when I was going to Macedonia, remain in Ephesus so that yoʋ may charge certain people not to teach different doctrines
As I urged you when I was going into Macedonia, stay at Ephesus that you might command certain people not to teach a different doctrine,
4 or to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies, which promote disputes rather than the plan of God that operates by faith.
neither to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause speculation, rather than God's stewardship, which is in faith—
5 The goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith.
but the goal of this command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and unfeigned faith;
6 Some have strayed from these and have turned aside to meaningless talk,
from which things some, having missed the mark, have turned aside to vain talking;
7 desiring to be teachers of the law, although they do not understand what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.
desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor about what they strongly affirm.
8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully.
But we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
9 We know that the law is not laid down for the righteous, but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers,
as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their father or mother, for murderers,
10 fornicators, homosexuals, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is opposed to the sound teaching
for the sexually immoral, for men who have sexual relations with men, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and for whatever else is contrary to sound teaching;
11 that conforms to the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, which has been entrusted to me.
according to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
12 I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, because he considered me to be faithful and appointed me to serve him,
And I thank him who enabled me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he counted me faithful, appointing me to service;
13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man. But I received mercy because I had ignorantly acted in unbelief,
although I was before a blasphemer, a persecutor, and insolent. However, I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
14 and the grace of our Lord abounded to me greatly with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
The grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
15 This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.
The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost sinner, Jesus Christ might show complete patience, making me an example for those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. (aiōnios )
However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience, for an example of those who were going to believe in him for everlasting life. (aiōnios )
17 Now to the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (aiōn )
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (aiōn )
18 This charge I entrust to yoʋ, Timothy, my child, according to the prophecies once made about yoʋ, so that by them yoʋ may fight the good fight,
This instruction I commit to you, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which led the way to you, that by them you may wage the good warfare;
19 having faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have shipwrecked their faith.
holding faith and a good conscience; which some having thrust away made a shipwreck concerning the faith;
20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learn not to blaspheme.
of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I delivered to Satan, that they might be taught not to blaspheme.
