Matthew 5
1 And when Jesus saw the multitudes, he ascended a hill; and when he was seated, his disciples drew near him:
Or, voyant les foules, il monta sur la montagne; et lorsqu’il se fut assis, ses disciples s’approchèrent de lui;
2 and he opened his mouth, and taught them, and said:
et ayant ouvert la bouche, il les enseignait, disant:
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit for the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
Bienheureux les pauvres en esprit, car c’est à eux qu’est le royaume des cieux;
4 Blessed are the mourners: for they shall be comforted!
bienheureux ceux qui mènent deuil, car c’est eux qui seront consolés;
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth!
bienheureux les débonnaires, car c’est eux qui hériteront de la terre;
6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be satiated!
bienheureux ceux qui ont faim et soif de la justice, car c’est eux qui seront rassasiés;
7 Blessed are the merciful: for on them shall be mercies!
bienheureux les miséricordieux, car c’est à eux que miséricorde sera faite;
8 Blessed are the clean in heart: for they shall behold God!
bienheureux ceux qui sont purs de cœur, car c’est eux qui verront Dieu;
9 Blessed are the cultivators of peace: for they shall be called sons of God!
bienheureux ceux qui procurent la paix, car c’est eux qui seront appelés fils de Dieu;
10 Blessed are they that are persecuted on account of righteousness: for the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
bienheureux ceux qui sont persécutés à cause de la justice, car c’est à eux qu’est le royaume des cieux.
11 Blessed are ye, when they revile you and persecute you, and speak every evil thing against you, falsely, on my account.
Vous êtes bienheureux quand on vous injuriera, et qu’on vous persécutera, et qu’on dira, en mentant, toute espèce de mal contre vous, à cause de moi.
12 At that time, rejoice and be glad: for your reward in heaven is great. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.
Réjouissez-vous et tressaillez de joie, car votre récompense est grande dans les cieux; car on a persécuté ainsi les prophètes qui ont été avant vous.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth! But if the salt become insipid, with what shall it be seasoned? It is fit for nothing; but to be thrown out, and be trodden under foot by men.
Vous êtes le sel de la terre; mais si le sel a perdu sa saveur, avec quoi sera-t-il salé? Il n’est plus bon à rien qu’ à être jeté dehors et à être foulé aux pieds par les hommes.
14 Ye are the light of the world! A city built upon a hill, not be concealed.
Vous êtes la lumière du monde: une ville située sur une montagne ne peut être cachée.
15 And they do not light a lamp and place it under a bushel; but upon a lightstand, and it giveth light to all that are in the house.
Aussi n’allume-t-on pas une lampe pour la mettre ensuite sous le boisseau, mais sur le pied de lampe; et elle luit pour tous ceux qui sont dans la maison.
16 Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Que votre lumière luise ainsi devant les hommes, en sorte qu’ils voient vos bonnes œuvres, et qu’ils glorifient votre Père qui est dans les cieux.
17 Do not suppose that I have come to subvert the law or the prophets: I have come not to subvert, but to fulfill.
Ne pensez pas que je sois venu pour abolir la loi ou les prophètes: je ne suis pas venu pour abolir, mais pour accomplir;
18 For verily I say to you, that until heaven and earth shall pass away, one iota or one letter shall not pass from the law, until all shall be fulfilled.
car, en vérité, je vous dis: Jusqu’à ce que le ciel et la terre passent, un seul iota ou un seul trait de lettre ne passera point de la loi, que tout ne soit accompli.
19 Therefore whoever shall break one of these small commands and shall so inculcate on the children of men, shall be called little in the kingdom of heaven: but every one that shall do and teach them, shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Quiconque donc aura supprimé l’un de ces plus petits commandements et aura enseigné ainsi les hommes, sera appelé le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux; et quiconque l’aura pratiqué et enseigné, celui-là sera appelé grand dans le royaume des cieux.
20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness shall abound more than that of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Car je vous dis que, si votre justice ne surpasse pas celle des scribes et des pharisiens, vous n’entrerez point dans le royaume des cieux.
21 Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill: and every one that killeth, is obnoxious to judgment.
Vous avez entendu qu’il a été dit aux anciens: « Tu ne tueras pas; et quiconque tuera, sera passible du jugement ».
22 But I say to you, That every one who is angry with his brother rashly, is obnoxious to judgment: and every one that saith to his brother, Raka! is obnoxious to the council: and every one that shall say, Fool is obnoxious to hell-fire. (Geenna g1067)
Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque se met en colère légèrement contre son frère sera passible du jugement; et quiconque dira à son frère: “Raca”, sera passible [du jugement] du sanhédrin; et quiconque dira “fou”, sera passible de la géhenne du feu. (Geenna g1067)
23 If therefore thou shalt bring thy oblation to the altar, and shalt there remember that thy brother hath any offence against thee,
Si donc tu offres ton don à l’autel, et que là il te souvienne que ton frère a quelque chose contre toi,
24 leave there thy oblation before the altar, and go first and be reconciled with thy brother; and then come and present thy oblation.
laisse là ton don devant l’autel, et va d’abord, réconcilie-toi avec ton frère; et alors viens et offre ton don.
25 Be at agreement with thy prosecutor, forthwith, and while on the way with him; lest the prosecutor deliver thee up to the judge, and the Judge deliver thee over to the sheriff, and thou fall into the house of prisoners.
Mets-toi promptement d’accord avec ta partie adverse, pendant que tu es en chemin avec elle, de peur que ta partie adverse ne te livre au juge, et que le juge ne te livre au sergent, et que tu ne sois jeté en prison;
26 Verily I say to thee, Thou wilt not come out from there until thou hast paid the last farthing.
en vérité, je te dis: Tu ne sortiras point de là, jusqu’à ce que tu aies payé le dernier quadrant.
27 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Vous avez entendu qu’il a été dit: « Tu ne commettras pas adultère ».
28 But I say to you, That whoever gazeth on a woman with concupiscence, at once committeth adultery with her in his heart.
Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque regarde une femme pour la convoiter, a déjà commis adultère avec elle dans son cœur.
29 If therefore thy right eye make thee offend, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; because it is better for thee that thy one member perish, than that thy whole body fall into hell. (Geenna g1067)
Mais si ton œil droit est pour toi une occasion de chute, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi; car il est avantageux pour toi qu’un de tes membres périsse, et que tout ton corps ne soit pas jeté dans la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
30 And if thy right hand make thee offend, cut it off, and cast it from thee; because it is better for thee that one of thy members perish, than that thy whole body fall into hell. (Geenna g1067)
Et si ta main droite est pour toi une occasion de chute, coupe-la et jette-la loin de toi; car il est avantageux pour toi qu’un de tes membres périsse, et que tout ton corps ne soit pas jeté dans la géhenne. (Geenna g1067)
31 It hath been said, That if a man will put away his wife, he must give her a writing of divorcement.
Il a été dit aussi: « Si quelqu’un répudie sa femme, qu’il lui donne une lettre de divorce ».
32 But I say to you, That whoever putteth away his wife, except for the offence of whoredom, causeth her to commit adultery: and he that taketh the divorced woman, committeth adultery.
Mais moi, je vous dis que quiconque répudiera sa femme, si ce n’est pour cause de fornication, la fait commettre adultère; et quiconque épousera une femme répudiée, commet adultère.
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not be false in thy oaths; but thou shalt perform thine oaths to the Lord.
Vous avez encore entendu qu’il a été dit aux anciens: « Tu ne te parjureras pas, mais tu rendras justement au Seigneur tes serments ».
34 But I say to you, Swear not at all: not by heaven, for it is the throne of God:
Mais moi, je vous dis de ne pas jurer du tout; ni par le ciel, car il est le trône de Dieu;
35 and not by the earth, for it is the footstool under his feet: and likewise not by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king.
ni par la terre, car elle est le marchepied de ses pieds; ni par Jérusalem, car elle est la ville du grand Roi.
36 Moreover, thou shalt not swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair in it either black or white.
Tu ne jureras pas non plus par ta tête, car tu ne peux faire blanc ou noir un cheveu.
37 But let your language be, Yes, yes; or No, no; for whatever is beyond these proceedeth from evil.
Mais que votre parole soit: Oui, oui; non, non; car ce qui est de plus vient du mal.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said: An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
Vous avez entendu qu’il a été dit: « Œil pour œil, et dent pour dent ».
39 But I say to you: Resist not evil; but if a person smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Mais moi, je vous dis: Ne résistez pas au mal; mais si quelqu’un te frappe sur la joue droite, présente-lui aussi l’autre;
40 And if one is disposed to sue thee and get away thy coat, relinquish to him also thy cloak.
et à celui qui veut plaider contre toi et t’ôter ta tunique, laisse-lui encore le manteau;
41 Whoever compelleth thee to go one mile, go with him two.
et si quelqu’un veut te contraindre de faire un mille, vas-en deux avec lui.
42 Whoever demandeth of thee, give to him: and whoever wisheth to borrow of thee, deny him not.
Donne à qui te demande, et ne te détourne pas de qui veut emprunter de toi.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said: Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thy enemy.
Vous avez entendu qu’il a été dit: « Tu aimeras ton prochain, et tu haïras ton ennemi ».
44 But I say to you: Love your enemies; and bless him that curseth you; and do good to him that hateth you; and pray for them that lead you in bonds, and that persecute you:
Mais moi, je vous dis: Aimez vos ennemis, [bénissez ceux qui vous maudissent, faites du bien à ceux qui vous haïssent], et priez pour ceux qui [vous font du tort et] vous persécutent,
45 that ye may be the children of your Father that is in heaven, who causeth his sun to rise upon the good and upon the bad, and sendeth his rain upon the righteous and upon the unrighteous.
en sorte que vous soyez les fils de votre Père qui est dans les cieux; car il fait lever son soleil sur les méchants et sur les bons, et envoie sa pluie sur les justes et sur les injustes.
46 For, if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans do this?
Car si vous aimez ceux qui vous aiment, quelle récompense avez-vous? Les publicains même n’en font-ils pas autant?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye that is not common? Do not even publicans do this?
Et si vous saluez vos frères seulement, que faites-vous de plus [que les autres]? Les nations même ne font-elles pas ainsi?
48 Be ye therefore perfect; even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
Vous, soyez donc parfaits, comme votre Père céleste est parfait.
