< Matthew 5 >

1 And when Jesus saw the multitudes, he ascended a hill; and when he was seated, his disciples drew near him:
Seeing the multitude of people, Jesus went up the Hill. There He seated Himself, and when His disciples came to Him,
2 and he opened his mouth, and taught them, and said:
He proceeded to teach them, and said:
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit for the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for to them belongs the Kingdom of the Heavens.
4 Blessed are the mourners: for they shall be comforted!
"Blessed are the mourners, for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth!
"Blessed are the meek, for they as heirs shall obtain possession of the earth.
6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness: for they shall be satiated!
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be completely satisfied.
7 Blessed are the merciful: for on them shall be mercies!
"Blessed are the compassionate, for they shall receive compassion.
8 Blessed are the clean in heart: for they shall behold God!
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 Blessed are the cultivators of peace: for they shall be called sons of God!
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for it is they who will be recognized as sons of God.
10 Blessed are they that are persecuted on account of righteousness: for the kingdom of heaven is theirs!
"Blessed are those who have borne persecution in the cause of Righteousness, for to them belongs the Kingdom of the Heavens.
11 Blessed are ye, when they revile you and persecute you, and speak every evil thing against you, falsely, on my account.
"Blessed are you when they have insulted and persecuted you, and have said every cruel thing about you falsely for my sake.
12 At that time, rejoice and be glad: for your reward in heaven is great. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.
Be joyful and triumphant, because your reward is great in the Heavens; for so were the Prophets before you persecuted.
13 Ye are the salt of the earth! But if the salt become insipid, with what shall it be seasoned? It is fit for nothing; but to be thrown out, and be trodden under foot by men.
"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has become tasteless, in what way can it regain its saltness? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown away and trodden on by the passers by.
14 Ye are the light of the world! A city built upon a hill, not be concealed.
You are the light of the world; a town cannot be hid if built on a hill-top.
15 And they do not light a lamp and place it under a bushel; but upon a lightstand, and it giveth light to all that are in the house.
Nor is a lamp lighted to be put under a bushel, but on the lampstand; and then it gives light to all in the house.
16 Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Just so let your light shine before all men, in order that they may see your holy lives and may give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.
17 Do not suppose that I have come to subvert the law or the prophets: I have come not to subvert, but to fulfill.
"Do not for a moment suppose that I have come to abrogate the Law or the Prophets: I have not come to abrogate them but to give them their completion.
18 For verily I say to you, that until heaven and earth shall pass away, one iota or one letter shall not pass from the law, until all shall be fulfilled.
Solemnly I tell you that until Heaven and earth pass away, not one iota or smallest detail will pass away from the Law until all has taken place.
19 Therefore whoever shall break one of these small commands and shall so inculcate on the children of men, shall be called little in the kingdom of heaven: but every one that shall do and teach them, shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Whoever therefore breaks one of these least commandments and teaches others to break them, will be called the least in the Kingdom of the Heavens; but whoever practises them and teaches them, he will be acknowledged as great in the Kingdom of the Heavens.
20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness shall abound more than that of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
For I assure you that unless your righteousness greatly surpasses that of the Scribes and the Pharisees, you will certainly not find entrance into the Kingdom of the Heavens.
21 Ye have heard that it was said to the ancients, Thou shalt not kill: and every one that killeth, is obnoxious to judgment.
"You have heard that it was said to the ancients, 'Thou shalt not commit murder', and whoever commits murder will be answerable to the magistrate.
22 But I say to you, That every one who is angry with his brother rashly, is obnoxious to judgment: and every one that saith to his brother, Raka! is obnoxious to the council: and every one that shall say, Fool is obnoxious to hell-fire. (Geenna g1067)
But I say to you that every one who becomes angry with his brother shall be answerable to the magistrate; that whoever says to his brother 'Raca,' shall be answerable to the Sanhedrin; and that whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be liable to the Gehenna of Fire. (Geenna g1067)
23 If therefore thou shalt bring thy oblation to the altar, and shalt there remember that thy brother hath any offence against thee,
If therefore when you are offering your gift upon the altar, you remember that your brother has a grievance against you,
24 leave there thy oblation before the altar, and go first and be reconciled with thy brother; and then come and present thy oblation.
leave your gift there before the altar, and go and make friends with your brother first, and then return and proceed to offer your gift.
25 Be at agreement with thy prosecutor, forthwith, and while on the way with him; lest the prosecutor deliver thee up to the judge, and the Judge deliver thee over to the sheriff, and thou fall into the house of prisoners.
Come to terms without delay with your opponent while you are yet with him on the way to the court; for fear he should obtain judgement from the magistrate against you, and the magistrate should give you in custody to the officer and you be thrown into prison.
26 Verily I say to thee, Thou wilt not come out from there until thou hast paid the last farthing.
I solemnly tell you that you will certainly not be released till you have paid the very last farthing.
27 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt not commit adultery.
"You have heard that it was said, 'Thou shalt not commit adultery.'
28 But I say to you, That whoever gazeth on a woman with concupiscence, at once committeth adultery with her in his heart.
But I tell you that whoever looks at a woman and cherishes lustful thoughts has already in his heart become guilty with regard to her.
29 If therefore thy right eye make thee offend, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; because it is better for thee that thy one member perish, than that thy whole body fall into hell. (Geenna g1067)
If therefore your eye, even the right eye, is a snare to you, tear it out and away with it; it is better for you that one member should be destroyed rather than that your whole body should be thrown into Gehenna. (Geenna g1067)
30 And if thy right hand make thee offend, cut it off, and cast it from thee; because it is better for thee that one of thy members perish, than that thy whole body fall into hell. (Geenna g1067)

31 It hath been said, That if a man will put away his wife, he must give her a writing of divorcement.
"It was also said, 'If any man puts away his wife, let him give her a written notice of divorce.'
32 But I say to you, That whoever putteth away his wife, except for the offence of whoredom, causeth her to commit adultery: and he that taketh the divorced woman, committeth adultery.
But I tell you that every man who puts away his wife except on the ground of unfaithfulness causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries her when so divorced commits adultery.
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not be false in thy oaths; but thou shalt perform thine oaths to the Lord.
"Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, 'Thou shalt not swear falsely, but shalt perform thy vows to the Lord.'
34 But I say to you, Swear not at all: not by heaven, for it is the throne of God:
But I tell you not to swear at all; neither by Heaven, for it is God's throne;
35 and not by the earth, for it is the footstool under his feet: and likewise not by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king.
nor by the earth, for it is the footstool under His feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the City of the Great King.
36 Moreover, thou shalt not swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair in it either black or white.
And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
37 But let your language be, Yes, yes; or No, no; for whatever is beyond these proceedeth from evil.
But let your language be, 'Yes, yes,' or 'No, no.' Anything in excess of this comes from the Evil one.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said: An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.'
39 But I say to you: Resist not evil; but if a person smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
But I tell you not to resist a wicked man, but if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.
40 And if one is disposed to sue thee and get away thy coat, relinquish to him also thy cloak.
If any one wishes to go to law with you and to deprive you of your under garment, let him take your outer one also.
41 Whoever compelleth thee to go one mile, go with him two.
And whoever shall compel you to convey his goods one mile, go with him two.
42 Whoever demandeth of thee, give to him: and whoever wisheth to borrow of thee, deny him not.
To him who asks, give: from him who would borrow, turn not away.
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said: Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thy enemy.
"You have heard that it was said, 'Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy.'
44 But I say to you: Love your enemies; and bless him that curseth you; and do good to him that hateth you; and pray for them that lead you in bonds, and that persecute you:
But I command you all, love your enemies, and pray for your persecutors;
45 that ye may be the children of your Father that is in heaven, who causeth his sun to rise upon the good and upon the bad, and sendeth his rain upon the righteous and upon the unrighteous.
that so you may become true sons of your Father in Heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the wicked as well as the good, and sends rain upon those who do right and those who do wrong.
46 For, if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans do this?
For if you love only those who love you, what reward have you earned? Do not even the tax-gatherers do that?
47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye that is not common? Do not even publicans do this?
And if you salute only your near relatives, what praise is due to you? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
48 Be ye therefore perfect; even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
You however are to be complete in goodness, as your Heavenly Father is complete.
