< Matthew 17 >
1 And after six days Jesus took Cephas, and James, and John his brother, and conducted them alone to a high mountain.
Six day later, Jesus took with Him Peter and the brothers James and John, and brought them up a high mountain to a solitary place.
2 And Jesus was changed before them: and his face shone like the sun; and his vestments became white like the light.
There in their presence His form underwent a change; His face shone like the sun, and His raiment became as white as the light.
3 And there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, in conversation with him.
And suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them conversing with Him.
4 Then Cephas answered and said to Jesus: My Lord, it is good for us to be here: and, if it please thee, we will make here three booths; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
Then Peter said to Jesus, "Master, we are thankful to you that we are here. If you approve, I will put up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
5 And while he was yet speaking, lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and there was a voice from the cloud which said: This is my beloved Son, in whom I have pleasure; hear ye him.
He was still speaking when a luminous cloud spread over them; and a voice was heard from within the cloud, which said, "This is My Son dearly beloved, in whom is My delight. Listen to Him."
6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were much afraid.
On hearing this voice, the disciples fell on their faces and were filled with terror.
7 And Jesus came to them and touched them, and said: Arise, and be not afraid.
But Jesus came and touched them, and said, "Rouse yourselves and have no fear."
8 And they raised their eyes, and they saw no person, except Jesus only.
So they looked up, and saw no one but Jesus.
9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, and said to them: Speak of this vision before no person, until the Son of man shall have arisen from the dead.
As they were descending the mountain, Jesus laid a command upon them. "Tell no one," He said, "of the sight you have seen till the Son of Man has risen from among the dead."
10 And his disciples asked him, and said to him: Why then do the Scribes say, that Elijah must first come?
"Why then," asked the disciples, "do the Scribes say that Elijah must first come?"
11 Jesus answered, and said to them: Elijah doth first come, to fulfill every thing.
"Elijah was indeed to come," He replied, "and would reform everything.
12 And I say to you. That, behold, Elijah hath come, and they did not know him; and they have done to him whatever they pleased: and, in like manner, also the Son of man is to suffer from them.
But I tell you that he has already come, and they did not recognize him, but dealt with him as they chose. And before long the Son of Man will be treated by them in a similar way."
13 Then the disciples understood, that he spake to them of John the Baptizer.
Then it dawned upon the disciples that it was John the Baptist about whom He had spoken to them.
14 And when they came to the multitude, a man approached him, and bowed himself on his knees,
When they had returned to the people, there came to Him a man who fell on his knees before Him and besought Him.
15 and said to him: My Lord, compassionate me. I have a son who is a lunatic, and grievously afflicted; for often he falleth into the fire, and often into the water.
"Sir," he said, "have pity on my son, for he is an epileptic and is very ill. Often he falls into the fire and often into the water.
16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not heal him.
I have brought him to your disciples, and they have not been able to cure him."
17 Jesus answered and said: O unbelieving and perverse generation! How long shall I be with you? and how long bear with you? Bring him here to me.
"O unbelieving and perverse generation!" replied Jesus; "how long shall I be with you? how long shall I endure you? Bring him to me."
18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it departed from him: and from that hour the child was healed.
Then Jesus reprimanded the demon, and it came out and left him; and the boy was cured from that moment.
19 Then came the disciples to Jesus, apart, and said to him: Why could not we heal him?
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked Him, "Why could not we expel the demon?"
20 Jesus said to them: Because of your unbelief. For verily I say to you, That if there be in you faith like a grain of mustard seed, ye may say to this mountain, Remove hence, and it will remove: and nothing will be too hard for you.
"Because your faith is so small," He replied; "for I solemnly declare to you that if you have faith like a mustard-seed, you shall say to this mountain, 'Remove from this place to that,' and it will remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you.
21 But this kind goeth not out, except by fasting and prayer.
But an evil spirit of this kind is only driven out by prayer and fasting."
22 And while they were resident in Galilee, Jesus said to them: The Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of men;
As they were travelling about in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men;
23 and they will kill him; and the third day he will arise. And it saddened them much.
they will put Him to death, but on the third day He will be raised to life again." And they were exceedingly distressed.
24 And when they came to Capernaum, those who receive the two drachmas of capitation money came to Cephas, and said to him: Doth not your rabbi pay his two drachmas?
After their arrival at Capernaum the collectors of the half-shekel came and asked Peter, "Does not your Teacher pay the half-shekel?"
25 He said to them, Yes. And when Cephas had entered the house, Jesus anticipated him and said to him: How doth it appear to thee, Simon? The kings of the earth, of whom do they receive tribute and capitation money? of their children, or of aliens?
"Yes," he replied, and then went into the house. But before he spoke a word Jesus said, "What think you, Simon? From whom do this world's kings receive customs or capitation tax? from their own children, or from others?"
26 Simon said to him: Of aliens. Jesus said to him: Then the children are free.
"From others," he replied. "Then the children go free," said Jesus.
27 But still, lest they be stumbled with us, go thou to the sea and cast in a fish-hook, and the fish that shall first come up, open its mouth, and thou wilt find a stater: that take, and give for me and for thyself.
"However, lest we cause them to sin, go and throw a hook into the Lake, and take the first fish that comes up. When you open its mouth, you will find a shekel in it: bring that coin and give it to them for yourself and me."
