Acts 1
1 THE former book have I written, O Theophilus concerning all the things which our Lord Jesus Messiah began to do and teach,
Dans mon premier récit, Théophile, j'ai raconté depuis le commencement tout ce que Jésus a fait et enseigné
2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had instructed those legates whom he had chosen by the Holy Spirit.
jusqu'au jour où, après avoir donné, par l'Esprit saint, ses ordres aux apôtres qu'il avait choisis, il fut enlevé au ciel.
3 To whom also he showed himself alive after he had suffered, by numerous signs, during forty days, while he was seen by them, and spoke of the kingdom of God.
Déjà, après sa passion, il s'était montré à eux vivant, leur avait donné de nombreuses preuves de sa résurrection, leur était apparu pendant quarante jours, leur avait parlé des choses du Royaume de Dieu.
4 And when he had eaten bread with them, he instructed them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which (said he) ye have heard from me.
Un jour qu'ils étaient réunis, il leur ordonna de ne pas quitter Jérusalem, mais d'y attendre ce que le Père avait promis... «Ce dont vous m'avez entendu parler, leur dit-il;
5 For John baptized with water; but ye will be baptized with the Holy Spirit after not many days.
car Jean baptisait d'eau, mais vous, vous serez baptisés d'Esprit saint dans peu de jours.»
6 And they, when assembled, asked him and said to him: Our Lord, wilt thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?
Les apôtres, tout en l'accompagnant, lui posaient des questions: «Seigneur, lui demandèrent-ils, est-ce maintenant que tu vas rétablir la royauté en Israël?»
7 He said to them: It is not yours, to know the time or times which God hath placed in his own power.
Il leur répondit: «Vous n'avez pas à savoir les époques ou les moments que le Père a fixés de sa propre autorité;
8 But when the Holy Spirit shall come upon you, ye will receive energy, and will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and also among the Samaritans, and unto the ends of the earth.
mais vous recevrez une grande force quand le saint Esprit descendra sur vous, et vous serez mes témoins à Jérusalem, dans toute la Judée, en Samarie et jusqu'au bout du monde.»
9 And when he had said these things, while they beheld him, he was taken up, and a cloud received him, and he was hidden from their eyes.
Pendant qu'il prononçait ces paroles et pendant qu'ils le regardaient, il fut enlevé et une nuée vint le dérober à leurs yeux.
10 And while they were looking toward heav, as he departed, two men were found standing near them, in white garments,
Comme ils considéraient attentivement le ciel pendant qu'il s'en allait, deux hommes en vêtements blancs se présentèrent à eux:
11 and saying to them: Ye Galilean men, why stand ye and look toward heaven? This Jesus, who is taken up from you to heaven, will so come, as ye have seen him ascend to heaven.
«Galiléens, leur dirent-ils, pourquoi restez-vous là à regarder au ciel? Ce Jésus qui vient d'être enlevé au ciel du milieu de vous, en reviendra de la même manière que vous l'avez vu y monter.»
12 And afterwards they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called the place of Olives, which was near to Jerusalem, and distant from it about seven furlongs.
Ils retournèrent alors de la montagne appelée Bois d'Oliviers à Jérusalem, qui est tout près, à la distance d'un chemin de sabbat.
13 And when they had entered, they went to an upper chamber; where were Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, and Philip, and Thomas, and Matthew, and Bartholomew, and James the son of Alpheus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the son of James.
Rentrés dans la ville, ils montèrent à la chambre haute, où ils se tenaient d'ordinaire. C'étaient: Pierre, Jean, Jacques et André, — Philippe et Thomas, — Barthélemy et Matthieu, — Jacques, fils d'Alphée, Simon le Zélote et Judas, fils de Jacques.
14 All these unitedly persevered in prayer, with one soul, together with the women, and with Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
Eux tous, avec persévérance et d'un seul coeur, s'y adonnaient à la prière avec les femmes, avec Marie, mère de Jésus, et avec les frères de celui-ci.
15 And in those days stood up Simon Cephas in the midst of the disciples, (the persons there assembled being about one hundred and twenty, ) and said:
Un de ces jours-là, Pierre se leva au milieu des frères (cent vingt personnes environ étaient ensemble réunies) et voici ce qu'il dit:
16 Men, brethren, it was right that the scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spake, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas who was guide to them that apprehended Jesus.
«Mes frères, il fallait que s'accomplît l'Écriture, la prédiction de l'Esprit saint faite par la bouche de David sur Judas (celui qui s'est chargé de conduire ceux qui ont arrêté Jésus),
17 For he was numbered with us, and had a part in this ministry.
parce qu'il était au nombre des nôtres et qu'il avait reçu sa part de notre ministère
18 He purchased a field with the wages of sin; and he fell upon his face on the ground, and burst in the middle, and all his entrails were poured out.
— (cet homme, après avoir acheté un champ avec le salaire de son crime, s'est jeté, la tête la première; son corps s'est brisé par le milieu; ses entrailles se sont répandues;
19 And this was known to all that dwelt at Jerusalem; so that the field was called, in the language of the country, Aceldama, which is interpreted Field of Blood.
ce fait est si bien, connu de tous les habitants de Jérusalem, que dans leur langue ils appellent ce champ Acheldamach, c'est-à-dire champ du sang)
20 For it is written, in the book of Psalms: Let his habitation be desolate, and let no resident be in it; and let another take his service.
en effet, il est écrit au livre des Psaumes: «Que sa demeure devienne un désert! Que personne n'y habite!» et: «Qu'un autre obtienne sa charge.»
21 It should therefore be, that one of these persons, who have been with us all the time that our Lord Jesus went in and out with us,
Donc, il faut qu'un des hommes qui nous ont accompagnés pendant tout le temps, depuis que le Seigneur Jésus a commencé jusqu'à ce qu'il ait cessé d'être avec nous,
22 commencing from the baptism of John, unto the day he was taken up from us, should be, with us, a witness of his resurrection.
en prenant depuis le baptême de Jean jusqu'au jour où il nous a été enlevé, devienne avec nous témoin de sa résurrection.»
23 And they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabas, whose surname was Justus, and Matthias.
Ils en proposèrent deux: Joseph dit Bar-Sabbas, surnommé Justus, et Matthias;
24 And when they had prayed, they said: Thou, Lord, knowest what is in the hearts of all, manifest which thou hast chosen of these two,
puis ils firent cette prière: «Toi, Seigneur, qui connais tous les coeurs, montre-nous lequel de ces deux frères tu as choisi
25 that he should take part in this ministry and legateship, from which Judas broke away, that he might go to his own place.
pour qu'il occupe la place de ministre et d'apôtre que Judas a quittée pour aller à la place qui est la sienne.»
26 And they cast lots, and it came upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven legates.
Ensuite on tira au sort. Le sort tomba sur Matthias, qui fut alors associé aux onze apôtres.
