< Acts 4 >
1 And while they were speaking these words to the people, the priests and the Sadducees and the rulers of the temple rose up against them;
yasmin samaye pitarayohanau lokAn upadishatastasmin samaye yAjakA mandirasya senApatayaH sidUkIgaNashcha
2 being angry with them, that they taught the people, and preached a resurrection from the dead by the Messiah.
tayor upadeshakaraNe khrIShTasyotthAnam upalakShya sarvveShAM mR^itAnAm utthAnaprastAve cha vyagrAH santastAvupAgaman|
3 And they laid hands on them, and kept them until the next day; because evening was drawing near.
tau dhR^itvA dinAvasAnakAraNAt paradinaparyyanantaM ruddhvA sthApitavantaH|
4 And many who had heard the word, believed; and they were, in number, about five thousand men.
tathApi ye lokAstayorupadesham ashR^iNvan teShAM prAyeNa pa nchasahasrANi janA vyashvasan|
5 And the next day, the rulers and the Elders and the Scribes assembled;
pare. ahani adhipatayaH prAchInA adhyApakAshcha hAnananAmA mahAyAjakaH
6 and also Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and they who were of the kindred of the high priests.
kiyaphA yohan sikandara ityAdayo mahAyAjakasya j nAtayaH sarvve yirUshAlamnagare militAH|
7 And when they had set them in the midst, they interrogated them: By what power or what name, have ye done this?
anantaraM preritau madhye sthApayitvApR^ichChan yuvAM kayA shaktayA vA kena nAmnA karmmANyetAni kuruthaH?
8 Then Simon Cephas was filled with the Holy Spirit, and said to them: Ye rulers of the people, and Elders of the house of Israel, hear ye.
tadA pitaraH pavitreNAtmanA paripUrNaH san pratyavAdIt, he lokAnAm adhipatigaNa he isrAyelIyaprAchInAH,
9 If we are judged by you this day, respecting the good deed done to the infirm man, by what means he was healed;
etasya durbbalamAnuShasya hitaM yat karmmAkriyata, arthAt, sa yena prakAreNa svasthobhavat tachched adyAvAM pR^ichChatha,
10 be it known to you, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Messiah the Nazarean, whom ye crucified, and whom God hath raised from the dead, lo, by him, doth this man stand here before you recovered.
tarhi sarvva isrAyelIyalokA yUyaM jAnIta nAsaratIyo yo yIshukhrIShTaH krushe yuShmAbhiravidhyata yashcheshvareNa shmashAnAd utthApitaH, tasya nAmnA janoyaM svasthaH san yuShmAkaM sammukhe prottiShThati|
11 This is the stone, which ye builders rejected; and it hath become the head of the corner.
nichetR^ibhi ryuShmAbhirayaM yaH prastaro. avaj nAto. abhavat sa pradhAnakoNasya prastaro. abhavat|
12 Neither is there deliverance in any other; for there is not another name under heaven, which is given to men, whereby to live.
tadbhinnAdaparAt kasmAdapi paritrANaM bhavituM na shaknoti, yena trANaM prApyeta bhUmaNDalasyalokAnAM madhye tAdR^ishaM kimapi nAma nAsti|
13 And when they heard the speech of Simon and John, which they pronounced confidently, they reflected that these were unlearned and plebeian men, and they were surprised at them, and recognized them as having been conversant with Jesus.
tadA pitarayohanoretAdR^ishIm akShebhatAM dR^iShTvA tAvavidvAMsau nIchalokAviti buddhvA Ashcharyyam amanyanta tau cha yIshoH sa Nginau jAtAviti j nAtum ashaknuvan|
14 And they saw that the lame man, who had been healed, stood near them; and they could say nothing to confront them.
kintu tAbhyAM sArddhaM taM svasthamAnuShaM tiShThantaM dR^iShTvA te kAmapyaparAm ApattiM karttaM nAshaknun|
15 Then they commanded to remove them from the presence of the council; and said one to another:
tadA te sabhAtaH sthAnAntaraM gantuM tAn Aj nApya svayaM parasparam iti mantraNAmakurvvan
16 What shall we do to these men? For lo, that a manifest sign hath been wrought by them, is known to all that reside at Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
tau mAnavau prati kiM karttavyaM? tAvekaM prasiddham AshcharyyaM karmma kR^itavantau tad yirUshAlamnivAsinAM sarvveShAM lokAnAM samIpe prAkAshata tachcha vayamapahnotuM na shaknumaH|
17 But that the fame of it spread no further, let us interdict their speaking any more to any man in this name.
kintu lokAnAM madhyam etad yathA na vyApnoti tadarthaM tau bhayaM pradarshya tena nAmnA kamapi manuShyaM nopadishatam iti dR^iDhaM niShedhAmaH|
18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak nor to teach at all in the name of Jesus.
tataste preritAvAhUya etadAj nApayan itaH paraM yIsho rnAmnA kadApi kAmapi kathAM mA kathayataM kimapi nopadisha ncha|
19 Simon Cephas and John answered, and said to them: Whether it be right before God, that we hearken to you more than to God, judge ye.
tataH pitarayohanau pratyavadatAm IshvarasyAj nAgrahaNaM vA yuShmAkam Aj nAgrahaNam etayo rmadhye Ishvarasya gochare kiM vihitaM? yUyaM tasya vivechanAM kuruta|
20 For we cannot but speak that which we have seen and heard.
vayaM yad apashyAma yadashR^iNuma cha tanna prachArayiShyAma etat kadApi bhavituM na shaknoti|
21 And they threatened them, and dismissed them. For they found no ground for punishing them, because of the people: for every one praised God for what had been done;
yadaghaTata tad dR^iShTA sarvve lokA Ishvarasya guNAn anvavadan tasmAt lokabhayAt tau daNDayituM kamapyupAyaM na prApya te punarapi tarjayitvA tAvatyajan|
22 for the man, on whom this sign of healing had been wrought, was more than forty years old.
yasya mAnuShasyaitat svAsthyakaraNam AshcharyyaM karmmAkriyata tasya vayashchatvAriMshadvatsarA vyatItAH|
23 And when they were dismissed, they went to their brethren, and told them all that the priests and Elders had said.
tataH paraM tau visR^iShTau santau svasa NginAM sannidhiM gatvA pradhAnayAjakaiH prAchInalokaishcha proktAH sarvvAH kathA j nApitavantau|
24 And they, when they heard it, unitedly lifted up their voice to God and said: Lord, thou art God, who hast made heaven, and earth, and seas, and every thing in them.
tachChrutvA sarvva ekachittIbhUya Ishvaramuddishya prochchairetat prArthayanta, he prabho gagaNapR^ithivIpayodhInAM teShu cha yadyad Aste teShAM sraShTeshvarastvaM|
25 And it is thou who hast said, by the Holy Spirit in the mouth of David thy servant: Why do the nations rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
tvaM nijasevakena dAyUdA vAkyamidam uvachitha, manuShyA anyadeshIyAH kurvvanti kalahaM kutaH| lokAH sarvve kimarthaM vA chintAM kurvvanti niShphalAM|
26 The kings of the earth and the potentates stood up, and they consulted together, against the Lord, and against his anointed.
parameshasya tenaivAbhiShiktasya janasya cha| viruddhamabhitiShThanti pR^ithivyAH patayaH kutaH||
27 For, in reality, against thy holy Son Jesus whom thou hast anointed, Herod and Pilate, with the Gentiles and the congregation of Israel, have been combined together in this city,
phalatastava hastena mantraNayA cha pUrvva yadyat sthirIkR^itaM tad yathA siddhaM bhavati tadarthaM tvaM yam athiShiktavAn sa eva pavitro yIshustasya prAtikUlyena herod pantIyapIlAto
28 to do whatever thy hand and thy pleasure previously marked out to be done.
.anyadeshIyalokA isrAyellokAshcha sarvva ete sabhAyAm atiShThan|
29 And also now, Lord, behold and see their menaces: and grant to thy servants, that they may proclaim thy word boldly,
he parameshvara adhunA teShAM tarjanaM garjana ncha shR^iNu;
30 while thou extendest thy hand for cures and prodigies, to be done in the name of thy holy Son Jesus.
tathA svAsthyakaraNakarmmaNA tava bAhubalaprakAshapUrvvakaM tava sevakAn nirbhayena tava vAkyaM prachArayituM tava pavitraputrasya yIsho rnAmnA AshcharyyANyasambhavAni cha karmmANi karttu nchAj nApaya|
31 And when they had prayed and made supplications, the place in which they were assembled was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word of God boldly.
itthaM prArthanayA yatra sthAne te sabhAyAm Asan tat sthAnaM prAkampata; tataH sarvve pavitreNAtmanA paripUrNAH santa Ishvarasya kathAm akShobheNa prAchArayan|
32 And in the assembly of the persons that believed, there was one soul, and one mind: and no one of them said, of the property he possessed, that it was his own; but whatever was theirs, it was the community's.
apara ncha pratyayakArilokasamUhA ekamanasa ekachittIbhUya sthitAH| teShAM kepi nijasampattiM svIyAM nAjAnan kintu teShAM sarvvAH sampattyaH sAdhAraNyena sthitAH|
33 And with great power, the legates testified to the resurrection of Jesus Messiah: and great grace was with them all.
anyachcha preritA mahAshaktiprakAshapUrvvakaM prabho ryIshorutthAne sAkShyam adaduH, teShu sarvveShu mahAnugraho. abhavachcha|
34 And no one among them was destitute; for those who possessed lands or houses, sold, and brought the price of what was sold,
teShAM madhye kasyApi dravyanyUnatA nAbhavad yatasteShAM gR^ihabhUmyAdyA yAH sampattaya Asan tA vikrIya
35 and placed it at the feet of the legates; and distribution was made to every one, as he had need.
tanmUlyamAnIya preritAnAM charaNeShu taiH sthApitaM; tataH pratyekashaH prayojanAnusAreNa dattamabhavat|
36 And Joseph, who by the legates was surnamed Barnabas, (which is interpreted Son of Consolation, ) a Levite of the country of Cyprus,
visheShataH kupropadvIpIyo yosinAmako levivaMshajAta eko jano bhUmyadhikArI, yaM preritA barNabbA arthAt sAntvanAdAyaka ityuktvA samAhUyan,
37 had a field: and he sold it, and brought the price of it, and laid it before the feet of the legates.
sa jano nijabhUmiM vikrIya tanmUlyamAnIya preritAnAM charaNeShu sthApitavAn|
