< 1 Timothy 6 >
1 Let them who are under the yoke of servitude, hold their masters in all honor; lest the name of God and his doctrine be reproached.
Let all who are under the yoke of slavery hold their own masters to be deserving of honour, so that the name of God and the Christian teaching may not be spoken against.
2 And let them who have believing masters, not treat them with disrespect, because they are their brethren; but let them be more obedient, because they are believers and beloved, in whose service they enjoy quietness. These things teach thou, and request of them.
And those who have believing masters should not be wanting in respect towards them because they are their brethren, but should serve them all the more willingly because those who profit by the faithful service rendered are believers and are friends.
3 But if there be any one, who teacheth a different doctrine, and doth not accede to the salutary words of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, and to the doctrine of the fear of God,
So teach and exhort. If any one is a teacher of any other kind of doctrine, and refuses assent to wholesome instructions--those of our Lord Jesus Christ--and the teaching that harmonizes with true godliness,
4 he is one that exalteth himself, while he knoweth nothing; and he languisheth in the search and inquiry about words, from which come envy, and contention, and railing, and evil surmising,
he is puffed up with pride and has no true knowledge, but is crazy over discussions and controversies about words which give rise to envy, quarrelling, revilings, ill-natured suspicions,
5 and the disputation of men, whose minds are corrupt and destitute of the truth, and who suppose that gain is godliness. But from these stand thou aloof.
and persistent wranglings on the part of people whose intellects are disordered and they themselves blinded to all knowledge of the truth; who imagine that godliness means gain.
6 But great is our gain, which is the fear of God, with the use of our competence.
And godliness is gain, when associated with contentment;
7 For we brought nothing into the world; and we know that we can carry nothing out of it.
for we brought nothing into the world, nor can we carry anything out of it;
8 Therefore, food and clothing satisfy us.
and if we have food and clothing, with these we will be satisfied.
9 But they who desire to become rich, fall into temptations, and into snares, and into many lusts which are foolish and hurtful, and which drown men in destruction and perdition:
But people who are determined to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many unwise and pernicious ways which sink mankind in destruction and ruin.
10 for the love of money is the root of all these evils. And there are some who, coveting it, have erred from the faith, and brought themselves into many sorrows.
For from love of money all sorts of evils arise; and some have so hankered after money as to be led astray from the faith and be pierced through with countless sorrows.
11 But thou, O man of God, flee from these things; and follow after righteousness, and rectitude, and faith, and love, and patience, and humility.
But you, O man of God, must flee from these things; and strive for uprightness, godliness, good faith, love, fortitude, and a forgiving temper.
12 And contend in the good contest of faith; and lay hold of life eternal, to which thou art called, and of which thou hast confessed a good confession before many witnesses. (aiōnios )
Exert all your strength in the honourable struggle for the faith; lay hold of the Life of the Ages, to which you were called, when you made your noble profession of faith before many witnesses. (aiōnios )
13 I charge thee, before God, who quickeneth all, and before Jesus the Messiah who attested a good testimony before Pontius Pilate,
I charge you--as in the presence of God who gives life to all creatures, and of Christ Jesus who at the bar of Pontius Pilate made a noble profession of faith--
14 that thou keep the injunction, without stain, and without blemish, until the manifestation of our Lord Jesus the Messiah;
that you keep God's commandments stainlessly and without reproach till the Appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
15 which God will, in due time make visible; God the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords;
For, as its appointed time, this will be brought about by the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
16 who only is incorruptible, and dwelleth in light to which no one can approach; and whom no man hath seen, or even can see: to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. (aiōnios )
who alone possesses immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, and whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be eternal honour and power! Amen. (aiōnios )
17 Charge the rich of this world, that they be not uplifted in their minds; and that they confide not in riches, in which is no security; but in the living God, who giveth us all things abundantly for our comfort: (aiōn )
Impress on those who are rich in the present age that they must not be haughty nor set their hopes on riches--that unstable foundation--but on God who provides us richly with all things for our enjoyment. (aiōn )
18 and that they do good works, and be rich in well-doings; and be ready to give and to communicate:
They must be beneficent, rich in noble deeds, open-handed and liberal;
19 and that they lay up for themselves a good foundation for that which is future; that they may take hold of real life.
storing up for themselves that which shall be a solid foundation for the future, that they may lay hold of the Life which is life indeed.
20 O Timothy, be careful of that which is committed to thee; and shun vain words, and the oppositions of false science:
O Timothy, guard the truths entrusted to you, shunning irreligious and frivolous talk, and controversy with what is falsely called 'knowledge';
21 for they who profess it, have erred from the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
of which some have spoken boastfully in connexion with the true faith, and have erred. Grace be with you all.
