Matthew 3
1 NOW in those days came Juchanon the Baptizer preaching in the desert of Jehud,
Meðan þau bjuggu í Nasaret tók Jóhannes skírari að predika í óbyggðum Júdeu. Kjarninn í boðskap hans var þessi:
2 and saying, Repent! the kingdom of heaven hath drawn nigh.
„Snúið ykkur frá syndinni og til Guðs, því ríki himnanna er nálægt.“
3 For this is he of whom it was spoken by Eshaia the prophet: The voice which crieth in the desert, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths plain.
Jesaja spámaður sagði þannig fyrir um starf Jóhannesar mörgum öldum áður: „Ég heyri hrópað í auðninni: Ryðjið Drottni veg – gjörið beinar brautir hans.“
4 But this Juchanon, his clothing was of the hair of camels, with a loins-belt of leather upon his loins; and his food was locusts and wilderness-honey.
Klæðnaður Jóhannesar var ofinn úr úlfaldahári, og hann notaði leðurbelti. Hann lifði á engisprettum og villihunangi.
5 Then went forth to him Urishlem, and all Jehud, and the whole country about Jurdan;
Fólk streymdi frá Jerúsalem, allri Júdeu og úr Jórdandalnum til þess að hlusta á hann.
6 and were baptized of him in Jurdan, the river, while they were confessing their sins.
Þá sem játuðu syndir sínar skírði hann í ánni Jórdan.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharishee and Zodukoyee coming to be baptized, he said to them, Generation of vipers, who hath showed you to escape from the wrath that cometh?
Margir farísear og saddúkear komu til að láta skírast hjá Jóhannesi. Þegar hann sá þá koma ásakaði hann þá opinberlega og sagði: „Þið höggormssynir! Hver hefur sagt að þið gætuð umflúið reiði Guðs?
8 Work, therefore, fruits which are suitable to repentance.
Áður en þið látið skírast verðið þið að sýna í verki að þið hafið snúið ykkur frá syndinni.
9 Neither ruminate and say within yourselves, that Abraham is father to us; for I say to you that Aloha is able from these stones to raise up sons unto Abraham.
Þið skuluð ekki halda að þið getið sloppið með því að segja: „Það er allt í lagi með okkur, við erum Gyðingar – afkomendur Abrahams“það er engin trygging í því. Guð gæti breytt grjótinu hérna í Gyðinga, ef hann vildi.
10 But, behold, the axe lieth at the root of the trees; every tree, therefore, which maketh not good fruit is cut down and falleth into the fire.
Nú þegar hefur öxi Guðs verið reidd til höggs, því að dómurinn er skammt undan og hvert það tré sem ekki ber ávöxt verður upp höggvið og brennt í eldi.
11 I, indeed, baptize you with water unto repentance; but He who cometh after me is mightier than I; he, whose sandals I am not worthy to bear, -he baptizeth you with the Spirit of Holiness and with fire.
Þá sem iðrast synda sinna skíri ég í vatni, en sá sem kemur á eftir mér er mér svo miklu æðri að ég er ekki einu sinni verður þess að halda á skónum hans!
12 He (it is) whose fan is in his hand, and, purifying his floors, the wheat he gathereth into his garner, but the chaff he burneth with the fire that is not quenched.
Hann mun skilja hismið frá kjarnanum og safna korninu í hlöðuna en brenna hismið í óslökkvandi eldi.“
13 Then came Jeshu from Galila unto Jurdan to Juchanan to be baptized of him.
Þá kom Jesús frá Galíleu til árinnar Jórdan til þess að skírast hjá Jóhannesi,
14 But Juchanon prohibited him, and said, I need from thee to be baptized, and hast thou come unto me?
en Jóhannes færðist undan að skíra hann og sagði: „Kemur þú til að skírast hjá mér?! Ég þyrfti fremur að fá skírn hjá þér.“
15 But Jeshu answered and said unto him, Permit now; for thus it becometh us to accomplish all righteousness. And then he permitted him.
„Láttu þetta samt eftir mér því þá gerum við það sem rétt er, “sagði Jesús. Þá skírði Jóhannes hann.
16 But when Jeshu was baptized, he immediately ascended from the waters; and the heaven was opened unto him; and he saw the Spirit of Aloha, who descended, like the dove, and came upon him.
Þegar Jesús steig upp úr vatninu að skírninni lokinni, opnuðust himnarnir yfir honum og hann sá anda Guðs koma niður yfir sig, í dúfulíki,
17 And, lo, the voice from heaven, which said, This (is) my Son, the Beloved, in whom I have delighted.
og rödd af himni sagði: „Þessi er minn elskaði sonur sem ég hef velþóknun á.“
