Hebrews 12

Ainsi donc, nous aussi, puisque nous avons autour de nous une si grande nuée de témoins, après nous être débarrassés de tout ce qui nous alourdit et du péché qui nous enlace si aisément, courons avec persévérance dans la carrière qui nous est ouverte,

ayant les yeux fixés sur Jésus le chef et le consommateur de la foi, lui qui, à cause de la joie qui lui était offerte, a supporté la croix, méprisé l'ignominie, et s'est assis à la droite du trône de Dieu.

Considérez en effet celui qui a supporté une telle opposition des pécheurs contre lui-même, afin que vous ne perdiez pas courage en laissant défaillir vos âmes.

Vous n'avez pas encore résisté jusques au sang en luttant contre le péché;

et avez-vous oublié l'exhortation qui vous est adressée comme à des fils: « Mon fils, ne méprise pas le châtiment du Seigneur, et ne te laisse pas non plus défaillir quand tu es repris par Lui,

car celui que le Seigneur aime, Il le châtie, et Il fouette même tout fils qu'il reconnaît pour sien »?

Attendez-vous au châtiment; c'est comme des fils que Dieu vous traite; car quel est le fils que son père ne châtie point?

Mais, si vous demeurez exempts du châtiment dont tous ont eu leur part, vous êtes donc des bâtards et non pas des fils.

D'ailleurs, nous qui avons pour nous châtier les pères de notre chair, et qui les avons respectés, ne nous soumettrons-nous pas à bien plus forte raison au Père des esprits pour avoir la vie?

Recherchez la paix avec tous et la sanctification sans laquelle nul ne verra le Seigneur,

Ce n'est pas, en effet, d'un feu tangible et brûlant que vous vous êtes approchés, ni de l'obscurité, ni des ténèbres, ni de la tempête,

Ne vous êtes-vous pas, en effet, approchés de la montagne de Sion et de la ville du Dieu vivant qui est la Jérusalem céleste, et des myriades dont se compose le grand chœur des anges,

de l'assemblée des premiers-nés inscrits dans les cieux, et du juge qui est le Dieu de tous, et des esprits des justes qui ont été amenés à la perfection,

et de Jésus qui est le médiateur d'une nouvelle alliance, et du sang de l'aspersion qui parle mieux qu'Abel?

Prenez garde de ne pas refuser d'écouter Celui qui parle; car si ceux-là n'échappèrent pas, pour avoir refusé d'écouter Celui qui, sur la terre, rendait des oracles, à combien plus forte raison n'échapperons-nous pas si nous nous détournons de Celui qui en rend du haut des cieux,

Lui, dont la voix ébranla alors la terre, tandis que maintenant Il a fait cette promesse: « Une fois encore Je ferai trembler non seulement la terre, mais aussi le ciel. »

C'est pourquoi, comme nous sommes mis en possession d'un royaume inébranlable, soyons pénétrés d'une reconnaissance qui nous fasse rendre à Dieu un culte qui lui soit agréable, avec vénération et avec crainte,

car notre Dieu est aussi un feu dévorant.
