< Proverbs 23 >
1 If you will sit down to eat with a ruler carefully you will consider [that] which [is] before you.
When you sit to eat with a ruler, Diligently consider that which [is] before you,
2 And you will put a knife in throat your if [are] a master of appetite you.
And you have put a knife to your throat, If you [are] a man of appetite.
3 May not (you crave *Q(K)*) for dainties his and it [is] food of lies.
Have no desire to his delicacies, seeing it [is] lying food.
4 May not you labor to gain riches from understanding your cease.
Do not labor to make wealth, Cease from your own understanding, Do you cause your eyes to fly on it? Then it is not.
5 (¿ Do you cause to fly *Q(K)*) eyes your on it and there not [is] it for certainly it makes for itself wings like an eagle (it flies away *Q(K)*) the heavens.
For wealth makes wings to itself, It flies to the heavens as an eagle.
6 May not you eat [the] food of a [person] evil of eye and may not (you crave *Q(K)*) for dainties his.
Do not eat the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his delicacies,
7 For - as he calculates in self his [is] so he eat and drink he says to you and heart his not [is] with you.
For as he has thought in his soul, so he [is]. “Eat and drink,” he says to you, And his heart [is] not with you.
8 Morsel your [which] you have eaten you will vomit up it and you will spoil words your pleasant.
You vomit up your morsel you have eaten, And have marred your words that [are] sweet.
9 In [the] ears of a fool may not you speak for he will despise [the] insight of words your.
Do not speak in the ears of a fool, For he treads on the wisdom of your words.
10 May not you displace a boundary of antiquity and in [the] fields of fatherless ones may not you go.
Do not remove a border of ancient times, And do not enter into fields of the fatherless,
11 For redeemer their [is] strong he he will conduct case their with you.
For their Redeemer [is] strong, He pleads their cause with you.
12 Bring! to discipline heart your and ears your to words of knowledge.
Bring your heart to instruction, And your ear to sayings of knowledge.
13 May not you withhold from a youth discipline for you will strike him with the rod not he will die.
Do not withhold discipline from a youth, When you strike him with a rod he does not die.
14 You with the rod you will strike him and life his from Sheol you will deliver. (Sheol )
You strike him with a rod, And you deliver his soul from Sheol. (Sheol )
15 O son my if it is wise heart your it will rejoice heart my also I.
My son, if your heart has been wise, My heart rejoices, even mine,
16 So they may rejoice kidneys my when speak lips your uprightness.
And my reins exult when your lips speak uprightly.
17 May not it be jealous heart of your sinners that except in [the] fear of Yahweh all the day.
Do not let your heart be envious at sinners, But—in the fear of YHWH all the day.
18 That except there [is] a future and hope your not it will be cut off.
For is there a posterity? Then your hope is not cut off.
19 Listen O you son my and be wise and guide in the way heart your.
Hear, my son, and be wise, And make your heart blessed in the way,
20 May not you be among drunkards of wine among gluttons of meat themselves.
Do not become drunk with wine, Among gluttonous ones of flesh,
21 For a drunkard and a glutton he will become impoverished and rags it will clothe [them] drowsiness.
For the drunkard and glutton become poor, And drowsiness clothes with rags.
22 Listen to father your who he begot you and may not you despise if she is old mother your.
Listen to your father, who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she has become old.
23 Truth buy and may not you sell [it] wisdom and discipline and understanding.
Buy truth, and do not sell, Wisdom, and instruction, and understanding,
24 (Certainly he rejoices *Q(k)*) [the] father of a righteous [son] (and [one who] begets *Q(K)*) a wise [son] (he rejoices *Q(K)*) in him.
The father of the righteous rejoices greatly, The begetter of the wise rejoices in him.
25 May he rejoice father your and mother your and may she rejoice [the] [one who] bore you.
Your father and your mother rejoice, Indeed, she bearing you is joyful.
26 Give! O son my heart your to me and eyes your ways my (let them observe. *Q(K)*)
Give, my son, your heart to me, And let your eyes watch my ways.
27 For [is] a pit deep a prostitute and [is] a well narrow a foreign [woman].
For a harlot [is] a deep ditch, And a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.
28 Also she like a robber she lies in wait and treacherous [people] among humankind she increases.
She also, as catching prey, lies in wait, And she increases the treacherous among men.
29 [belongs] to Whom? woe [belongs] to whom? woe! [belong] to whom? (contentions *Q(K)*) [belongs] to whom? complaint [belong] to whom? wounds without cause [belongs] to whom? dullness of eyes.
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaint? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?
30 To [those who] delay over the wine to [those who] go to examine mixed wine.
Those lingering by the wine, Those going in to search out mixed wine.
31 May not you see wine for it will be red if it will give (in the cup *Q(K)*) eye its it will go with smoothness.
Do not see wine when it shows itself red, When it gives its color in the cup, It goes up and down through the upright.
32 End its like a snake it will bite and like a viper it will sting.
Its latter end—it bites as a serpent, And it stings as a viper.
33 Eyes your they will see strange [things] and heart your it will speak perverse things.
Your eyes see strange women, And your heart speaks perverse things.
34 And you will be like [one who] lies down in [the] heart of [the] sea and like [one who] lies down at [the] top of a mast.
And you have been as one lying down in the heart of the sea, And as one lying down on the top of a mast.
35 They struck me not I am sick they beat me not I know when? will I awake I will repeat I will seek it again.
“They struck me, I have not been sick, They beat me, I have not known. When I awake—I seek it yet again!”
