Judges 9
1 And he went Abimelech [the] son of Jerub-Baal Shechem towards to [the] brothers of mother his and he spoke to them and to all [the] clan of [the] house of [the] father of mother his saying.
Abimélec, fils de Jérubbaal, se rendit à Sichem, chez les frères de sa mère, et leur tint, ainsi qu’à toute la famille paternelle de sa mère, ce discours:
2 Speak please in [the] ears of all [the] citizens of Shechem what? [is] good for you ¿ to rule over you seventy man all [the] sons of Jerub-Baal or? to rule over you a man one and you will remember that [am] bone your and flesh your I.
"Faites donc entendre ceci à tous les bourgeois de Sichem: Lequel vaut mieux pour vous, être gouvernés par soixante-dix hommes, par tous les fils de Jérubbaal, ou d’être gouvernés par un seul homme? Et souvenez-vous que je suis de votre sang et de votre chair."
3 And they spoke [the] brothers of mother his on him in [the] ears of all [the] citizens of Shechem all the words these and it turned aside heart their after Abimelech for they said [is] brother our he.
Les frères de sa mère firent entendre toutes ces choses, en sa faveur, aux bourgeois de Sichem, et le cœur de ceux-ci inclina pour Abimélec, car ils se disaient: "C’Est notre frère."
4 And they gave to him seventy silver (from [the] house of Baal-*L(abh)*) Berith and he hired for them Abimelech men unprincipled and undisciplined and they went after him.
Ils lui donnèrent soixante-dix pièces d’argent, tirées du temple de Baal-Berith, et Abimélec s’en servit pour stipendier des gens de rien, des aventuriers, qui le suivirent.
5 And he went [the] house of father his Ophrah towards and he killed brothers his [the] sons of Jerub-Baal (seventy *L(abh)*) man on stone one and he was left Jotham [the] son of Jerub-Baal young for he hid himself.
Alors il s’en fut à Ofra, dans la maison de son père, et massacra ses frères, les soixante-dix fils de Jérubbaal, sur une même pierre. Jotham, le plus jeune fils de Jérubbaal, resta sauf, parce qu’il s’était caché.
6 And they gathered all [the] citizens of Shechem and all Beth Millo and they went and they made king Abimelech to king near [the] great tree set up which [was] in Shechem.
Or, tous les bourgeois de Sichem et toute la maison de Millo s’assemblèrent et se rendirent auprès du Chêne de Mouçab, dans Sichem. Là ils proclamèrent roi Abimélec.
7 And people told to Jotham and he went and he stood on [the] top of [the] mountain of Gerizim and he lifted up voice his and he called out and he said to them listen to me O citizens of Shechem so he may listen to you God.
Jotham, instruit du fait, alla se placer sur le sommet du mont Garizim et, élevant la voix, les interpella ainsi: "Ecoutez-moi, bourgeois de Sichem, et Dieu aussi vous écoutera!
8 Certainly they went the trees to anoint over them a king and they said to the olive tree (reign! *Q(k)*) over us.
Un jour les arbres se mirent en campagne pour se donner un roi. Ils dirent à l’olivier: "Sois notre roi."
9 And it said to them the olive tree ¿ will I cease fatness my which by me people honor gods and men and will I go to sway over the trees.
L’Olivier leur répondit: "Quoi! je renoncerais à mon suc, que Dieu et les hommes prisent en moi, pour aller me fatiguer à gouverner les arbres?"
10 And they said the trees to the fig tree come you reign over us.
Et les arbres dirent au figuier: "Viens, toi, régner sur nous."
11 And it said to them the fig tree ¿ will I cease sweetness my and fruit my good and will I go to sway over the trees.
Le figuier leur répondit: "Quoi! je renoncerais à ma douceur et à ma production exquise pour me fatiguer à gouverner les arbres?"
12 And they said the trees to the vine come you (reign *Q(k)*) over us.
Et les arbres dirent à la vigne: "Viens, toi, règne sur nous."
13 And it said to them the vine ¿ will I cease new wine my which makes glad gods and men and will I go to sway over the trees.
La vigne leur répondit: "Quoi! je renoncerais à mon jus, qui réjouit Dieu et les hommes, pour me fatiguer à gouverner les arbres?"
14 And they said all the trees to the thorn bush come you reign over us.
Alors les arbres dirent ensemble au buisson d’épines: "Viens donc, toi, et règne sur nous."
15 And it said the thorn bush to the trees if in truth you [are] anointing me to king over you come take refuge in shade my and if not let it go out a fire from the thorn bush and let it consume [the] cedars of Lebanon.
Et le buisson répondit aux arbres: "Si c’est de bonne foi que vous m’élisez pour votre roi, venez vous abriter sous mon ombre; sinon, qu’un feu sorte du buisson, et dévore les cèdres du Liban!
16 And now if in faithfulness and in integrity you have acted and you have made king Abimelech and if good you have done with Jerub-Baal and with house his and if according to [the] dealing of hands his you have done to him.
Et maintenant, vous aussi, si vous avez agi avec sincérité et loyauté en faisant roi Abimélec; si vous avez bien agi envers Jérubbaal et sa famille, agi en hommes reconnaissants de ses services…
17 That he fought father my on you and he threw life his from in front and he delivered you from [the] hand of Midian.
Car mon père a combattu pour vous, il a fait bon marché de sa vie, vous a délivrés du pouvoir de Madian.
18 And you you have risen up on [the] house of father my this day and you have killed sons his seventy man on stone one and you have made king Abimelech [the] son of female slave his over [the] citizens of Shechem for [is] brother your he.
Et vous, vous vous êtes rués sur la maison de mon père, vous avez tué ses fils au nombre de soixante-dix hommes sur une même pierre, et aujourd’hui vous donnez Abimélec, le fils de sa servante, pour roi aux citoyens de Sichem, parce qu’il est votre frère.
19 And if in faithfulness and in integrity you have acted with Jerub-Baal and with house his the day this rejoice in Abimelech so he may rejoice also he in you.
Si donc vous avez, en ce jour, honnêtement agi envers Jérubbaal et sa famille, grand bien vous fasse d’Abimélec et grand bien lui fasse de vous!
20 And if not let it go out a fire from Abimelech and let it consume [the] citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo and let it go out a fire from [the] citizens of Shechem and from Beth Millo and let it consume Abimelech.
Sinon, qu’un feu sorte d’Abimélec pour dévorer les Sichémites et la maison de Millo, et qu’un feu sorte des Sichémites et de la maison de Millo pour consumer Abimélec!"
21 And he fled Jotham and he ran away and he went Beer towards and he dwelt there [away] from before Abimelech brother his.
Là-dessus, Jotham s’enfuit et alla se réfugier à Beêr, où il s’établit pour échapper à son frère Abimélec.
22 And he ruled Abimelech over Israel three years.
Or, Abimélec exerçait le pouvoir sur Israël depuis trois ans,
23 And he sent God a spirit evil between Abimelech and between [the] citizens of Shechem and they dealt treacherously [the] citizens of Shechem with Abimelech.
lorsque Dieu suscita un mauvais esprit entre lui et les bourgeois de Sichem, et ceux-ci devinrent infidèles à Abimélec;
24 To come [the] violence of seventy [the] sons of Jerub-Baal and blood their to put on Abimelech brother their who he killed them and on [the] citizens of Shechem who they strengthened hands his to kill brothers his.
car l’attentat commis sur les soixante-dix fils de Jérubbaal et leur sang répandu devaient retomber sur leur frère Abimélec, qui les avait tués, et sur les gens de Sichem, qui l’avaient encouragé à ce meurtre.
25 And they set to him [the] citizens of Shechem ambushers on [the] tops of the mountains and they robbed every [one] who he passed by on them on the road and it was told to Abimelech.
Les bourgeois de Sichem postèrent contre lui, au sommet des montagnes, des embuscades, qui faisaient main-basse sur tous les voyageurs; et Abimélec en fut informé.
26 And he came Gaal [the] son of Ebed and brothers his and they passed on in Shechem and they trusted in him [the] citizens of Shechem.
Cependant, Gaal, fils d’Ebed, vint à passer par Sichem avec ses frères; il gagna la confiance des bourgeois de Sichem.
27 And they went out the field and they gathered grapes vineyards their and they trod [them] and they made rejoicings and they went [the] house of god their and they ate and they drank and they cursed Abimelech.
Ils allèrent aux champs, firent les vendanges et le pressurage, et se livrèrent à des réjouissances; puis ils se rendirent au temple de leur dieu, mangèrent et burent, et se répandirent en imprécations contre Abimélec.
28 And he said - Gaal [the] son of Ebed who? [is] Abimelech and who? [is] Shechem that we will serve him ¿ not [is he] [the] son of Jerub-Baal and [is] Zebul? deputy his serve [the] men of Hamor [the] father of Shechem and why? will we serve him we.
Et Gaal, fils d’Ebed, s’écria: "Qu’est-ce qu’Abimélec et qu’est-ce que Sichem, pour que nous obéissions à cet homme? N’Est-il pas fils de Jérubbaal, et Zeboul son lieutenant? Servez plutôt les descendants d’Hamor, père de Sichem; mais lui, pourquoi le servirions-nous?
29 And who? will he give the people this in hand my and I will remove Abimelech and he said of Abimelech make numerous army your and come out!
Ah! si j’avais ce peuple sous la main, j’aurais bientôt écarté Abimélec!" Et apostrophant Abimélec: "Augmente ton armée, et avance!…"
30 And he heard Zebul [the] official of the city [the] words of Gaal [the] son of Ebed and it burned anger his.
Zeboul, gouverneur de la ville, ayant eu connaissance des propos de Gaal, fils d’Ebed, s’enflamma de colère,
31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech in treachery saying here! Gaal [the] son of Ebed and brothers his [are] coming Shechem towards and here they [are] shutting up the city on you.
et il envoya sous main des exprès à Abimélec, pour lui dire: "Sache que Gaal, fils d’Ebed, et ses frères sont venus à Sichem, et ils ameutent la ville contre toi.
32 And therefore arise night you and the people which [is] with you and lie in wait in the field.
Donc lève-toi cette nuit, avec les hommes dont tu disposes, et embusque-toi dans la campagne;
33 And it will be in the morning when rises the sun you will rise early and you will make a raid on the city and there! he and the people which [is] with him [are] going out against you and you will do to him just as it will find hand your.
et demain de bonne heure, aux premiers rayons du soleil, tu te déploieras autour de la ville. Lui alors marchera à ta rencontre avec le peuple qui le suit, et tu lui feras ce que tu pourras lui faire."
34 And he arose Abimelech and all the people which [was] with him night and they lay in wait on Shechem four companies.
Abimélec se mit en mouvement avec tous ses hommes, la nuit suivante, et ils s’embusquèrent près de Sichem en quatre fractions.
35 And he went out Gaal [the] son of Ebed and he stood [the] entrance of [the] gate of the city and he arose Abimelech and the people which [was] with him from the ambush.
Comme Gaal, fils d’Ebed, sortait, et se tenait à la porte de la ville, Abimélec s’élança de son embuscade avec la troupe qui l’accompagnait.
36 And he saw Gaal the people and he said to Zebul there! a people [is] coming down from [the] tops of the mountains and he said to him Zebul [the] shadow of the mountains you [are] seeing like men.
Gaal, les remarquant, dit à Zeboul: "Voici une troupe qui descend du sommet des montagnes." Zeboul lui répondit: "C’Est l’ombre des montagnes, que tu prends pour des hommes."
37 And he repeated again Gaal to speak and he said there! a people [are] coming down from with [the] center of the land and a company one [is] coming from [the] direction of [the] great tree of [the] soothsayer.
Et Gaal insista en disant: "Je vois du monde descendre de la hauteur centrale, et une fraction s’avancer par le chemin du Chêne des Augures."
38 And he said to him Zebul where? then [is] mouth your O [you] who you said who? [is] Abimelech that we will serve him ¿ not [is] this the people which you rejected it go out please now and fight against him.
Alors Zeboul lui dit: "Qu’est devenu ton fier langage, toi qui disais: Qu’est-ce qu’Abimélec pour que nous le servions? Eh bien! le voilà ce peuple que tu dédaignais; va maintenant et mesure-toi avec lui!"
39 And he went out Gaal before [the] citizens of Shechem and he fought against Abimelech.
Gaal s’avança à la tête des bourgeois de Sichem, et engagea le combat avec Abimélec.
40 And he pursued him Abimelech and he fled from before him and they fell [those] fatally wounded many to [the] entrance of the gate.
Mais Abimélec le força de fuir, et le poursuivit, en lui tuant beaucoup de monde, jusqu’à la porte de la ville.
41 And he dwelt Abimelech at Arumah and he drove out Zebul Gaal and brothers his from dwelling at Shechem.
Abimélec se tint à Arouma; et Zeboul expulsa Gaal et ses frères, leur interdisant le séjour de Sichem.
42 And it was from [the] next day and it went out the people the field and people told to Abimelech.
Le lendemain, le peuple se répandit dans la campagne, et Abimélec en fut informé.
43 And he took the people and he divided them into three companies and he lay in wait in the field and he saw and there! the people [was] going out from the city and he rose up on them and he struck down them.
Alors il réunit ses hommes et en fit trois divisions, avec lesquelles il s’embusqua dans les champs, et voyant le peuple sortir de la ville, il fondit sur lui et le tailla en pièces.
44 And Abimelech and the companies which [were] with him they made a raid and they stood [the] entrance of [the] gate of the city and [the] two the companies they made a raid on all [those] who [were] in the field and they struck down them.
Abimélec et sa division se déployèrent vers la porte de la ville, tandis que les deux autres divisions attaquèrent et battirent tous ceux qui étaient dans la campagne.
45 And Abimelech [was] fighting against the city all the day that and he captured the city and the people which [was] in it he killed and he pulled down the city and he sowed it salt.
Le reste de ce jour, Abimélec donna l’assaut à la ville, s’en rendit maître, en massacra la population, puis il rasa la ville et y sema du sel.
46 And they heard all [the] citizens of [the] tower of Shechem and they went into [the] underground chamber of [the] house of El-Berith.
A cette nouvelle, les bourgeois de la tour de Sichem allèrent se réfugier dans le donjon du temple d’El-Berith.
47 And it was told to Abimelech that they had gathered together all [the] citizens of [the] tower of Shechem.
Abimélec, apprenant que tous les hommes de la tour de Sichem étaient réunis là,
48 And he went up Abimelech [the] mountain of Zalmon he and all the people which [was] with him and he took Abimelech the axes in hand his and he cut off a branch of wood and he lifted up it and he put [it] on shoulder his and he said to the people which [was] with him whatever you have seen I have done hurry do like me.
se dirigea vers le mont Çalmon, suivi de tout son monde, se munit de haches, coupa une branche d’arbre et la mit sur son épaule, en disant au peuple: "Ce que vous m’avez vu faire, faites-le comme moi, vite!"
49 And they cut off also all the people everyone own branch his and they went after Abimelech and they put [them] over the underground chamber and they set on fire over them the underground chamber with fire and they died also all [the] men of [the] tower of Shechem about a thousand man and woman.
Et tout le peuple, à son tour, abattit chacun sa branche; ils suivirent Abimélec, et, avec ces branches disposées autour du donjon, ils y mirent le feu, de sorte que tous les gens de la tour de Sichem, environ mille, tant hommes que femmes, périrent eux aussi.
50 And he went Abimelech to Thebez and he encamped at Thebez and he captured it.
De là Abimélec marcha sur Tébeç, assiégea cette ville et s’en empara.
51 And a tower of strength it was in [the] middle of the city and they fled there towards all the men and the women and all [the] citizens of the city and they shut [the] door behind them and they went up on [the] roof of the tower.
Au milieu de la ville était une tour servant de défense; tous les hommes et les femmes, tous les bourgeois de la ville y coururent, s’y enfermèrent et montèrent sur le toit de la tour.
52 And he came Abimelech to the tower and he fought against it and he drew near to [the] entrance of the tower to burn it with fire.
Abimélec s’avança vers cette tour et l’attaqua. Déjà il s’approchait de l’entrée de l’édifice pour y mettre le feu,
53 And she threw a woman one a mill-stone of an upper mill-stone on [the] head of Abimelech and it crushed skull his.
lorsqu’une femme lança sur la tête d’Abimélec un fragment de meule, qui lui fracassa le crâne.
54 And he called quickly to the young man - [who] carried armor his and he said to him draw sword your and kill me lest people should say of me a woman she killed him and he pierced through him young man his and he died.
Aussitôt il appela son jeune écuyer et lui dit: "Tire ton épée et achève-moi! je ne veux pas qu’on dise: C’Est une femme qui l’a tué." Son serviteur lui donna un coup d’épée, et il mourut.
55 And they saw [the] man of Israel that he was dead Abimelech and they went everyone to own place his.
Les Israélites, voyant qu’Abimélec était mort, s’en retournèrent chacun chez soi.
56 And he repaid God [the] evil of Abimelech which he had done to father his by killing seventy brothers his.
Ainsi Dieu rendit à Abimélec le mal qu’il avait fait à son père en faisant périr ses soixante-dix frères;
57 And all [the] evil of [the] men of Shechem he repaid God on head their and it came to them [the] curse of Jotham [the] son of Jerub-Baal.
et toute la méchanceté des Sichémites, Dieu la leur fit expier aussi, et la malédiction de Jotham, fils de Jérubbaal, s’accomplit sur eux.
