John 11
1 Was now a certain [man] ailing, Lazarus of Bethany of the village of Mary and Martha the sister of her;
Erat autem quidem languens Lazarus a Bethania, de castello Mariæ, et Marthæ sororis eius.
2 Was now Mary the [one] having anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and having wiped the feet of Him with the hair of her, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
(Maria autem erat, quæ unxit Dominum unguento, et extersit pedes eius capillis suis: cuius frater Lazarus infirmabatur.)
3 Sent therefore the sisters to Him saying; Lord, behold [he] whom You love was being sick.
Miserunt ergo sorores eius ad eum dicentes: Domine, ecce quem amas infirmatur.
4 Having heard then Jesus said; This sickness not is unto death but for the glory of God that may be glorified the Son of God through it.
Audiens autem Iesus dixit eis: Infirmitas hæc non est ad mortem, sed pro gloria Dei, ut glorificetur Filius Dei per eam.
5 was loving now Jesus Martha and the sister of her and Lazarus.
Diligebat autem Iesus Martham, et sororem eius Mariam, et Lazarum.
6 When therefore He heard that he is sick, then indeed He remained in which He was [the] place two days.
Ut ergo audivit quia infirmabatur, tunc quidem mansit in eodem loco duobus diebus.
7 Then after this He says to the disciples; Let us go into Judea again.
deinde post hæc dixit discipulis suis: Eamus in Iudæam iterum.
8 Say to Him the disciples; Rabbi, just now were seeking You to stone the Jews, and again You are going there?
Dicunt ei discipuli: Rabbi, nunc quærebant te Iudæi lapidare, et iterum vadis illuc?
9 Answered (*k*) Jesus; Surely twelve hours are there in the day? If anyone shall walk in the day, not he stumbles, because the light of the world this he sees.
Respondit Iesus: Nonne duodecim sunt horæ diei? Si quis ambulaverit in die, non offendit, quia lucem huius mundi videt:
10 if however anyone shall walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light not is in him.
si autem ambulaverit in nocte, offendit, quia lux non est in eo.
11 These things He said and after this He says to them; Lazarus the friend of us has fallen asleep; but I go that I may awaken him.
Hæc ait, et post hæc dixit eis: Lazarus amicus noster dormit: sed vado ut a somno excitem eum.
12 Said therefore the disciples (to Him; *N(K)O*) Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well.
Dixerunt ergo discipuli eius: Domine, si dormit, salvus erit.
13 Had spoken however Jesus of the death of him; they however thought that of the rest of sleep He speaks.
Dixerat autem Iesus de morte eius: illi autem putaverunt quia de dormitione somni diceret.
14 Then therefore said to them Jesus plainly; Lazarus has died.
Tunc ergo Iesus dixit eis manifeste: Lazarus mortuus est:
15 And I rejoice for sake of you, in order that you may believe, that not I was there; But let us go to him.
et gaudeo propter vos, ut credatis, quoniam non eram ibi. sed eamus ad eum.
16 Said therefore Thomas who is being named Didymus to the fellow disciples; Let us go also us that we may die with Him.
Dixit ergo Thomas, qui dicitur Didymus, ad condiscipulos: Eamus et nos, ut moriamur cum eo.
17 Having come therefore Jesus found him four already days having been in the tomb.
Venit itaque Iesus: et invenit eum quattuor dies iam in monumento habentem.
18 Was now Bethany near Jerusalem about away stadia fifteen.
(Erat autem Bethania iuxta Ierosolymam quasi stadiis quindecim.)
19 (and *k*) Many (now *no*) of the Jews had come unto (*N(k)O*) (concerning *k*) Martha and Mary that they may console them concerning the brother (of them. *k*)
Multi autem ex Iudæis venerant ad Martham, et Mariam, ut consolarentur eas de fratre suo.
20 Therefore Martha, when she heard that (*k*) Jesus is coming, met with Him; Mary however in the house was sitting.
Martha ergo ut audivit quia Iesus venit, occurrit illi: Maria autem domi sedebat.
21 Said then Martha to Jesus; Lord, if You had been here, not then would (be dead *N(k)O*) the brother of mine.
Dixit ergo Martha ad Iesum: Domine, si fuisses hic, frater meus non fuisset mortuus:
22 Nevertheless even now I know that as much as maybe You may ask God will give You God.
Sed et nunc scio quia quæcumque poposceris a Deo, dabit tibi Deus.
23 Says to her Jesus; Will rise again the brother of you.
Dicit illi Iesus: Resurget frater tuus.
24 Says to him (*no*) Martha; I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.
Dicit ei Martha: Scio quia resurget in resurrectione in novissimo die.
25 Said to her Jesus; I myself am the resurrection and the life; the [one] believing in Me myself even if even if he shall die he will live,
Dixit ei Iesus: Ego sum resurrectio, et vita: qui credit in me, etiam si mortuus fuerit, vivet:
26 and everyone who is living and believing in Me myself certainly not he shall die to the age. Believe you this? (aiōn g165)
et omnis, qui vivit, et credit in me, non morietur in æternum. Credis hoc? (aiōn g165)
27 She says to Him; Yes Lord; I myself have believed that You yourself are the Christ the Son of God the [One] into the world coming.
Ait illi: Utique Domine, ego credidi, quia tu es Christus filius Dei vivi, qui in hunc mundum venisti.
28 And (these things *N(k)O*) having said she went away and she called Mary the sister of her secretly having said; The Teacher is come and He calls you.
Et cum hæc dixisset, abiit, et vocavit Mariam sororem suam silentio, dicens: Magister adest, et vocat te.
29 She (then *no*) when she heard ([she] rose up *N(k)O*) quickly and (was coming *N(k)O*) to Him.
Illa ut audivit, surgit cito, et venit ad eum:
30 Not yet now had come Jesus into the village, but was (still *no*) in the place where met with Him Martha.
nondum enim venerat Iesus in castellum: sed erat adhuc in illo loco, ubi occurrerat ei Martha.
31 The then Jews who are being with her in the house and consoling her, having seen Mary that soon she rose up and went out, followed after her, (having supposed *N(K)O*) that she is going to the tomb that she may weep there.
Iudæi ergo, qui erant cum ea in domo, et consolabantur eam, cum vidissent Mariam quia cito surrexit, et exiit, secuti sunt eam dicentes: Quia vadit ad monumentum, ut ploret ibi.
32 Therefore Mary when she came to where was (*k*) Jesus, having seen Him she fell of Him (at *N(k)O*) the feet saying to Him; Lord, if You had been here, not then would my have died brother.
Maria ergo, cum venisset ubi erat Iesus, videns eum, cecidit ad pedes eius, et dicit ei: Domine, si fuisses hic, non esset mortuus frater meus.
33 Jesus therefore when He saw her weeping and the having come with her Jews weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled Himself
Iesus ergo, ut vidit eam plorantem, et Iudæos, qui venerant cum ea, plorantes, infremuit spiritu, et turbavit seipsum,
34 And He said; Where have you laid him? They say to Him; Lord, do come and do see.
et dixit: Ubi posuistis eum? Dicunt ei: Domine, veni, et vide.
35 Wept Jesus.
Et lacrymatus est Iesus.
36 Were saying therefore the Jews; Behold how He was loving him!
Dixerunt ergo Iudæi: Ecce quomodo amabat eum.
37 Some however of them said; Surely was able this [man] who having opened the eyes of the blind to have caused that also this one not may have died?
Quidam autem ex ipsis dixerunt: Non poterat hic, qui aperuit oculos cæci nati, facere ut hic non moreretur?
38 Jesus therefore again being deeply moved in Himself He comes to the tomb; It was now a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
Iesus ergo rursum fremens in semetipso, venit ad monumentum. erat autem spelunca: et lapis superpositus erat ei.
39 Says Jesus; do take away the stone. Says to Him the sister of the [one] (having deceased *N(k)O*) Martha; Lord, already he stinks; four days for it is.
Ait Iesus: Tollite lapidem. Dicit ei Martha soror eius, qui mortuus fuerat: Domine, iam fœtet, quatriduanus est enim.
40 Says to her Jesus; Surely I said to you that if you shall believe you will see the glory of God?
Dicit ei Iesus: Nonne dixi tibi quoniam si credideris, videbis gloriam Dei?
41 They took away therefore the stone (where was who having died laid. *K*) Now Jesus lifted [His] eyes upwards and said; Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
Tulerunt ergo lapidem: Iesus autem elevatis sursum oculis, dixit: Pater gratias ago tibi quoniam audisti me.
42 I myself and knew that always Me You hear; but on account of the crowd which already standing around I said [it], that they may believe that You yourself Me sent.
ego autem sciebam quia semper me audis, sed propter populum, qui circumstat, dixi: ut credant quia tu me misisti.
43 And these things having said in a voice loud He cried out; Lazarus, come forth.
Hæc cum dixisset, voce magna clamavit: Lazare veni foras.
44 (and *k*) Came forth the [one] having died bound the feet and the hands with linen strips, and the face of him in a headcloth had bound about. Says to them Jesus: do unbind him and do allow him to go.
Et statim prodiit qui fuerat mortuus, ligatus pedes, et manus institis, et facies illius sudario erat ligata. Dixit eis Iesus: Solvite eum, et sinite abire.
45 Many therefore of the Jews having come to Mary and having seen (what things *NK(o)*) He did (Jesus *k*) believed in Him.
Multi ergo ex Iudæis, qui venerant ad Mariam, et Martham, et viderant quæ fecit Iesus, crediderunt in eum.
46 some however of them went to the Pharisees and told to them what did (*ko*) Jesus.
Quidam autem ex ipsis abierunt ad Pharisæos, et dixerunt eis quæ fecit Iesus.
47 Gathered therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees a council and they were saying; What are we to do? For this man many does signs!
Collegerunt ergo Pontifices et Pharisæi concilium, et dicebant: Quid faciamus, quia hic homo multa signa facit?
48 If we shall let him alone Him like this, all will believe in Him, and will come the Romans and will take away of us both the place and the nation.
Si dimittimus eum sic, omnes credent in eum: et venient Romani, et tollent nostrum locum, et gentem.
49 One however certain of them Caiaphas, high priest being on the year same, said to them; You yourselves not know no [thing],
Unus autem ex ipsis Caiphas nomine, cum esset Pontifex anni illius, dixit eis: Vos nescitis quidquam,
50 nor (consider you *N(k)O*) that it is profitable (for you *N(K)O*) that one man may die for the people, and not all the nation may perish.
nec cogitatis quia expedit vobis ut unus moriatur homo pro populo, et non tota gens pereat.
51 This now from himself not he said, but high priest being on the year that he prophesied that was about (*k*) Jesus to die for the nation,
Hoc autem a semetipso non dixit: sed cum esset Pontifex anni illius, prophetavit, quod Iesus moriturus erat pro gente,
52 and not for the nation only but that also the children of God those scattered He may gather together into one.
et non tantum pro gente, sed ut filios Dei, qui erant dispersi, congregaret in unum.
53 From that [very] therefore day (they plotted *N(k)O*) that they may kill Him.
Ab illo ergo die cogitaverunt ut interficerent eum.
54 (*no*) Therefore Jesus no longer no longer publicly was walking among the Jews, but went away from there into the region near the wilderness to Ephraim being named a city, And there And there (He stayed *N(k)O*) with the disciples (of him. *k*)
Iesus ergo iam non in palam ambulabat apud Iudæos, sed abiit in regionem iuxta desertum, in civitatem, quæ dicitur Ephrem, et ibi morabatur cum discipulis suis.
55 Was now near the Passover of the Jews, and went up many to Jerusalem out of the region before the Passover so that they may purify themselves.
Proximum autem erat Pascha Iudæorum: et ascenderunt multi Ierosolymam de regione ante Pascha, ut sanctificarent se ipsos.
56 They were seeking therefore Jesus and were saying among one another in the temple already standing; What does it seem to you, that certainly not He may come to the feast?
Quærebant ergo Iesum: et colloquebantur ad invicem, in templo stantes: Quid putatis, quia non venit ad diem festum?
57 Had given now (also *k*) the chief priests and the Pharisees (commands *N(K)O*) that if anyone shall know where He is he shall show [it], so that they may seize Him.
Dederant autem Pontifices, et Pharisæi mandatum, ut si quis cognoverit ubi sit, indicet, ut apprehendant eum.
