Genesis 32
1 And Jacob he went to way his and they met him [the] angels of God.
Jacob aussi s’en alla par le chemin qu’il avait pris: et les anges du Seigneur furent à sa rencontre.
2 And he said Jacob just when he saw them [is] [the] camp of God this and he called [the] name of the place that Mahanaim.
Quand il les eut vus, il dit: C’est le camp de Dieu; et il appela ce lieu du nom de Mahanaïm, c’est-à-dire camp.
3 And he sent Jacob messengers before him to Esau brother his [the] land of towards Seir [the] region of Edom.
Mais il envoya aussi des messagers devant lui à Esaü son frère dans la terre de Séir, dans la contrée d’Edom,
4 And he commanded them saying thus you will say! to lord my to Esau thus he says servant your Jacob with Laban I have sojourned and I have delayed until now.
Et leur commanda, disant: Parlez ainsi à mon seigneur Esaü: Voici ce que dit votre frère Jacob: J’ai demeuré comme étranger chez Laban, et j’y ai été jusqu’au présent jour.
5 And it be[longs] to me ox[en] and donkey[s] flock[s] and [male] servant[s] and female servant[s] and I have sent! to tell to lord my to find favor in view your.
J’ai des bœufs, des ânes, des brebis, des serviteurs et des servantes; et j’envoie maintenant un message à mon seigneur, afin de trouver grâce en votre présence.
6 And they returned the messengers to Jacob saying we went to brother your to Esau and also [he is] coming to meet you and four hundred man [are] with him.
Et les messagers retournèrent vers Jacob, disant: Nous sommes venus auprès d’Esaü, votre frère, et voici qu’il vient en grande hâte au-devant de vous avec quatre cents hommes.
7 And he was afraid Jacob exceedingly and it was distress to him and he divided the people which [was] with him and the flock and the herd and the camels into two camps.
Jacob eut une grande frayeur, et tout épouvanté, il divisa les gens qui étaient avec lui, de même que les troupeaux, les brebis, les bœufs et les chameaux, en deux troupes,
8 And he said if he will come Esau to the camp one and he will attack it and it will become the camp which remains an escaped remnant.
Disant: Si Esaü vient à une troupe et qu’il la batte, l’autre qui restera, sera sauvée.
9 And he said Jacob O God of father my Abraham and [the] God of father my Isaac O Yahweh who said to me return to land your and to kindred your so let me do good with you.
Jacob dit ensuite: Dieu de mon père Abraham, Dieu de mon père Isaac, Seigneur qui m’avez dit: Retourne en ton pays et au lieu de ta naissance et je te ferai du bien,
10 I am [too] insignificant for all the covenant loyalti and for all the faithfulness which you have done with servant your for with staff my I passed over the Jordan this and now I have become two camps.
Je suis au-dessous de vos miséricordes et de la fidélité que vous avez gardée envers votre serviteur. J’ai passé ce Jourdain n’ayant qu’un bâton; et maintenant je reviens avec deux troupes.
11 Deliver me please from [the] hand of brother my from [the] hand of Esau for [am] fearing I him lest he should come and he will attack me mother with children.
Délivrez-moi de la main de mon frère Esaü, car je le crains extrêmement; de peur que, venant, il ne frappe la mère avec les enfants.
12 And you you have said certainly I will do good with you and I will make offspring your like [the] sand of the sea which not it will be counted from multitude.
Vous avez dit que vous me feriez du bien, et que vous étendriez ma postérité comme le sable de la mer, lequel par sa multitude ne peut se compter.
13 And he stayed [the] night there in the night that and he took some of which came in hand his a gift for Esau brother his.
Et, quand il eut dormi là cette nuit, il sépara de ce qu’il avait, des présents pour Esaü son frère:
14 Female goats two hundred and male goats twenty ewes two hundred and rams twenty.
Deux cents chèvres, vingt boucs, deux cents brebis et vingt béliers,
15 Camels suckling and young their thirty cows forty and bulls ten female donkeys twenty and male donkeys ten.
Trente femelles de chameaux pleines avec leurs petits, quarante vaches, vingt taureaux, vingt ânesses et dix de leurs petits.
16 And he gave [them] in [the] hand of servants his herd herd to only it and he said to servants his pass over before me and a space you will put between a herd and between a herd.
Et il envoya par ses serviteurs chacun des troupeaux séparément, et il dit à ses serviteurs: Précédez-moi, et qu’il y ait un intervalle entre un troupeau et un troupeau.
17 And he commanded the first saying that he will meet you Esau brother my and he will ask you saying [belong] to whom? you and where? are you going and [belong] to whom? these [animals] before you.
Et il commanda au premier, disant: Si tu rencontres mon frère Esaü, et qu’il te demande: À qui es-tu? ou bien: Où vas-tu? ou: À qui sont ces bêtes que tu suis?
18 And you will say to servant your to Jacob [is] a gift it [which has] been sent to lord my to Esau and there! also he [is] behind us.
Tu répondras: A votre serviteur Jacob, qui les envoie en présent à mon seigneur Esaü: lui-même aussi vient après nous.
19 And he commanded both the second as well as the third as well as all who were going behind the herds saying according to the manner this you will speak! to Esau when find you him.
Il donna pareillement des ordres au second, au troisième, et à tous ceux qui suivaient les troupeaux, disant: C’est en ces mêmes termes que vous parlerez à Esaü, quand vous l’aurez trouvé.
20 And you will say also there! servant your Jacob [is] behind us for he said I will cover face his by the gift that is going before me and after thus I will see face his perhaps he will lift up face my.
Et vous ajouterez: Lui-même aussi votre serviteur Jacob suit notre chemin; car il a dit: Je l’apaiserai par les présents qui me précèdent, et après cela je le verrai, peut-être qu’il me deviendra propice.
21 And it passed on the gift on face his and he [was] staying [the] night in the night that in the camp.
C’est pourquoi les présents le précédèrent, mais lui-même demeura cette nuit-là dans le camp.
22 And he rose - in the night that and he took [the] two wives his and [the] two maidservants his and one [plus] ten sons his and he passed over [the] ford of Jabbok.
Et lorsqu’il se fut levé de bonne heure, il prit ses deux femmes et autant de servantes avec ses onze fils, et passa le gué de Jaboc.
23 And he took them and he sent over them the wadi and he sent over [that] which [belonged] to him.
Et ayant fait passer tout ce qui lui appartenait,
24 And he remained Jacob to only him and he wrestled a man with him until came up the dawn.
Il demeura seul: et voilà qu’un homme lutta avec lui jusqu’au matin.
25 And he saw that not he prevailed to him and he touched [the] socket of thigh his and it was dislocated [the] socket of [the] thigh of Jacob when wrestled he with him.
Or comme cet homme vit qu’il ne pouvait le vaincre, il toucha le nerf de sa cuisse, lequel aussitôt se dessécha.
26 And he said let go me for it has come up the dawn and he said not I will let go you that except you have blessed me.
Et il lui dit: Laisse-moi; car déjà se lève l’aurore. Jacob répondit: Je ne vous laisserai point, si vous ne me bénissez.
27 And he said to him what? [is] name your and he said Jacob.
Il lui demanda donc: Quel est ton nom? Il répondit: Jacob.
28 And he said not Jacob it will be called again name your that except Israel for you have struggled with God and with people and you have prevailed.
Mais l’homme: On ne t’appellera plus, dit-il, du nom de Jacob, mais du nom d’Israël; parce que si tu as été fort contre Dieu, combien plus prévaudras-tu contre les hommes?
29 And he asked Jacob and he said tell! please name your and he said why? this do you ask to name my and he blessed him there.
Jacob lui demanda: Dites-moi, de quel nom vous appelez-vous? Il répondit: Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom? Et il le bénit en ce même lieu.
30 And he called Jacob [the] name of the place Peniel for I have seen God face to face and it has been delivered life my.
Jacob appela ce lieu du nom Phanuel, disant: J’ai vu Dieu face à face, et mon âme a été sauvée.
31 And it rose to him the sun just when he passed over Penuel and he [was] limping on thigh his.
Et le soleil se leva aussitôt après qu’il eut passé Phanuel; mais il boitait d’un pied.
32 There-fore not they eat [the] people of Israel [the] sinew of the tendon which [is] on [the] socket of the thigh until the day this for he touched [the] socket of [the] thigh of Jacob [the] sinew of the tendon.
C’est pour ce motif que les enfants d’Israël ne mangent point jusqu’au présent jour, le nerf qui se dessécha dans la cuisse de Jacob, parce que l’ ange toucha le nerf de sa cuisse, qui fut paralysé.
