< Exodus 17 >

1 And they set out all [the] congregation of [the] people of Israel from [the] wilderness of Sin to journeyings their on [the] mouth of Yahweh and they encamped at Rephidim and there not [was] water to drink the people.
And all the assembly of the sons of Israel set forward out of the desert of Sin, by their removings, at the bidding of Yahweh, —and encamped in Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 And it quarreled the people with Moses and they said give to us water so we may drink and he said to them Moses why? are you quarreling! with me why? are you putting to [the] test! Yahweh.
And the people found fault with Moses, and said—Give us water, that we may drink. And Moses said to them, Why should ye find fault with me? Why should ye put Yahweh to the proof?
3 And it was thirsty there the people for water and it grumbled the people on Moses and it said why? this did you bring up us from Egypt to put to death me and children my and livestock my by thirst.
So the people thirsted, there for water, and the people murmured against Moses, —and said—Wherefore is it that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill me and my sons and my cattle, with thirst?
4 And he cried out Moses to Yahweh saying what? will I do to the people this yet a little and they will stone me.
And Moses made outcry unto Yahweh saying, What am I to do, with this people? Yet a little, and they will stone me.
5 And he said Yahweh to Moses pass on before the people and take with you some of [the] elders of Israel and staff your which you struck with it the River take in hand your and you will go.
Then said Yahweh unto Moses—Pass over before the people, and take with thee some of the elders of Israel, —thy staff also wherewith thou didst smite the river, take thou in thy hand, so shalt thou go thy way.
6 Here I [will be] standing before you there - on the rock at Horeb and you will strike the rock and they will come out from it waters and it will drink the people and he did so Moses to [the] eyes of [the] elders of Israel.
Behold me! standing before thee, there upon the rock in Horeb, then shalt thou smite the rock and there shall come forth therefrom water, and the people shall drink. And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7 And he called [the] name of the place Massah and Meribah on [the] quarrel of - [the] people of Israel and because put to [the] test they Yahweh saying ¿ [is] there Yahweh in midst our or? not.
So he called the name of the place, Massah, and Meribah, —because of the fault-finding of the sons of Israel, and because of their putting Yahweh to the proof, saying, Is Yahweh in our midst or is he not?
8 And it came Amalek and it joined battle with Israel at Rephidim.
Then came in Amalek, —and fought with Israel, in Rephidim.
9 And he said Moses to Joshua choose for us men and go out fight against Amalek tomorrow I [will be] standing on [the] top of the hill and [the] staff of God [will be] in hand my.
And Moses said unto Joshua—Choose for us men, and go forth, fight with Amalek, —to-morrow, am, I, stationing myself upon the top of the hill, with the staff of God in my hand.
10 And he did Joshua just as he had said to him Moses by fighting against Amalek and Moses Aaron and Hur they went up [the] top of the hill.
So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, to fight with Amalek, —and Moses, Aaron and Hur, went up to the top of the hill.
11 And it was just when he lifted up Moses hand his and it prevailed Israel and just when he gave rest hand his and it prevailed Amalek.
And it shall be when Moses shall lift on high his hands, then shall Israel prevail, but when he shall let down his hands, then shall Amalek prevail.
12 And [the] hands of Moses [were] heavy and they took a stone and they put [it] under him and he sat on it and Aaron and Hur they supported hands his from this one and from this one and it was hands his [were] steadiness until went the sun.
But, the hands of Moses, were weary, so they took a stone, and put under him, and he sat thereupon, —and, Aaron and Hur, upheld his hands—on this side, one and on that side, one, and so his hands became steady, until the going in of the sun.
13 And he defeated Joshua Amalek and people its to [the] mouth of [the] sword.
So Joshua overthrew Amalek and his people, with the edge of the sword.
14 And he said Yahweh to Moses write this reminder in the book and put [it] in [the] ears of Joshua for certainly I will wipe out [the] remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens.
Then said Yahweh unto Moses—Write this as a remembrancer in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua—that I will, wipe out, the remembrance of Amalek, from under the heavens.
15 And he built Moses an altar and he called name its Yahweh - [is] standard my.
And Moses built an altar, —and called the name thereof, Yahweh-nissi.
16 And he said that a hand on [the] throne of Yahweh war [will belong] to Yahweh with Amalek from generation generation.
And he said—Because of a hand against the throne of Yah, Yahweh hath war with Amalek, —from generation to generation!
