Proverbs 4
1 Hear, ye sons, the correction of a father, and attend, that ye may know understanding.
Hoort, gij kinderen! de tucht des vaders, en merkt op, om verstand te weten.
2 For, good teaching, have I given you, mine instruction, do not ye forsake.
Dewijl ik ulieden goede leer geve, verlaat mijn wet niet.
3 For, a son, became I to my father, tender and most precious in the sight of my mother.
Want ik was mijns vaders zoon, teder, en een enige voor het aangezicht mijner moeder.
4 So he taught me, and said to me—Let thy heart, lay hold of my words, Keep my commandments and live!
Hij nu leerde mij, en zeide tot mij: Uw hart houde mijn woorden vast, onderhoud mijn geboden, en leef.
5 Acquire wisdom, acquire understanding, Do not forget, neither decline thou from the sayings of my mouth.
Verkrijg wijsheid, verkrijg verstand; vergeet niet, en wijk niet van de redenen mijns monds.
6 Do not forsake her, and she will guard thee, —love her and she will keep thee.
Verlaat ze niet, en zij zal u behoeden; heb ze lief, en zij zal u bewaren.
7 The principal thing, is wisdom, acquire thou wisdom, With all thine acquisition, acquire thou understanding.
De wijsheid is het voornaamste; verkrijg dan wijsheid, en verkrijg verstand met al uw bezitting.
8 Exalt her, and she will set thee on high, she will bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her:
Verhef ze, en zij zal u verhogen; zij zal u vereren, als gij haar omhelzen zult.
9 She will give for thy head, a wreath of beauty, A crown of adorning, will she bestow upon thee.
Zij zal uw hoofd een aangenaam toevoegsel geven, een sierlijke kroon zal zij u leveren.
10 Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, and they will multiply to thee the years of life.
Hoor, mijn zoon! en neem mijn redenen aan, en de jaren des levens zullen u vermenigvuldigd worden.
11 In the way of wisdom, have I taught thee, I have guided thee in tracks of uprightness.
Ik onderwijs u in den weg der wijsheid; ik doe u treden in de rechte sporen.
12 When thou walkest, thy step shall not be hemmed in, and, if thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
In uw gaan zal uw tred niet benauwd worden, en indien gij loopt, zult gij niet struikelen.
13 Take fast hold of correction, let her not go, —keep her, for, she, is thy life.
Grijp de tucht aan, laat niet af; bewaar ze, want zij is uw leven.
14 Upon the path of the lawless, do not thou enter, and do not advance in the way of the wicked:
Kom niet op het pad der goddelozen, en treed niet op den weg der bozen.
15 Avoid it, do not pass thereon—turn from it, and depart.
Verwerp dien, ga er niet door; wijk er van, en ga voorbij.
16 For they sleep not, unless they can do mischief, —They rob themselves of their sleep, if they cannot cause someone to stumble,
Want zij slapen niet, zo zij geen kwaad gedaan hebben; en hun slaap wordt weggenomen, zo zij niet iemand hebben doen struikelen.
17 For they consume bread gotten by lawlessness, and, wine obtained by violence, they drink.
Want zij eten brood der goddeloosheid, en drinken wijn van enkel geweld.
18 But, the path of the righteous, is as the light of dawn, —going on and brightening, unto meridian day.
Maar het pad der rechtvaardigen is gelijk een schijnend licht, voortgaande en lichtende tot den vollen dag toe.
19 The way of the lawless, is like darkness, they know not, at what they stumble.
De weg der goddelozen is als donkerheid, zij weten niet, waarover zij struikelen zullen.
20 My son, to my words, attend, to my sayings, incline thou thine ear;
Mijn zoon! merk op mijn woorden, neig uw oor tot mijn redenen.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes, keep them in the midst of thy heart;
Laat ze niet wijken van uw ogen, behoud ze in het midden uws harten.
22 For, life, they are, to them who find them, —and, to every part of one’s flesh, they bring healing.
Want zij zijn het leven dengenen, die ze vinden, en een medicijn voor hun gehele vlees.
23 Above all that must be guarded, keep thou thy heart, for, out of it, are the issues of life.
Behoed uw hart boven al wat te bewaren is, want daaruit zijn de uitgangen des levens.
24 Remove from thee, perverseness of mouth, and, craftiness of lips, put far from thee.
Doe de verkeerdheid des monds van u weg, en doe de verdraaidheid der lippen verre van u.
25 Let, thine eyes, right onward, look, —and, thine eyelashes, point straight before thee.
Laat uw ogen rechtuit zien, en uw oogleden zich recht voor u heen houden.
26 Make level the track of thy foot, that, all thy ways, may be directed aright:
Weeg den gang uws voets, en laat al uw wegen wel gevestigd zijn.
27 Decline not, to the right hand or to the left, —Turn away thy foot from wickedness.
Wijk niet ter rechter hand of ter linkerhand, wend uw voet af van het kwade.
