Proverbs 31
1 The words of Lemuel the king, —the strain which was taught him by his mother: —
Les paroles du Roi Lémuel et l'instruction que sa mère lui donna.
2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? aye what, the son of my vows?
Quoi? mon fils? quoi, fils de mon ventre? eh quoi? mon fils, pour lequel j'ai tant fait de vœux?
3 Do not give, to women, thy strength, nor thy ways, to them who ruin kings.
Ne donne point ta force aux femmes, et [ne mets point] ton étude à détruire les Rois.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor, for dignitaries, to desire strong drink,
Lémuel, ce n'est point aux Rois, ce n'est point aux Rois de boire le vin, ni aux Princes de boire la cervoise.
5 Lest he drink, and forget that which is decreed, and alter the plea of any who are sorely oppressed.
De peur qu'ayant bu, ils n'oublient l'ordonnance, et qu'ils n'altèrent le droit de tous les pauvres affligés.
6 Give strong drink, to him that is perishing, and wine, to such as are embittered in soul:
Donnez de la cervoise à celui qui s'en va périr, et du vin à celui qui est dans l'amertume de cœur;
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and, his wearying toil, let him remember no more.
Afin qu'il en boive, et qu'il oublie sa pauvreté, et ne se souvienne plus de sa peine.
8 Open thy mouth for the dumb, for the cause of all the children of the departed.
Ouvre ta bouche en faveur du muet, pour le droit de tous ceux qui s'en vont périr.
9 Open thy mouth—judge righteously, —and administer justice for the poor and the needy.
Ouvre ta bouche, fais justice, et fais droit à l'affligé et au nécessiteux.
10 A virtuous woman, who can find? for, far beyond corals, is her worth.
[Aleph.] Qui est-ce qui trouvera une vaillante femme? car son prix surpasse de beaucoup les perles.
11 The heart of her husband, trusteth her, and, gain, he shall not lack:
[Beth.] Le cœur de son mari s'assure en elle, et il ne manquera point de dépouilles.
12 She doeth him good and not evil, all the days of her life:
[Guimel.] Elle lui fait du bien tous les jours de sa vie, et jamais du mal.
13 She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands:
[Daleth.] Elle cherche de la laine et du lin, et elle fait ce qu'elle veut de ses mains.
14 She is like the ships of the merchant, from afar, she bringeth in her food;
[He.] Elle est comme les navires d'un marchand, elle amène son pain de loin.
15 And she riseth, while yet it is night, and giveth food to her household, and a task to her maidens:
[Vau.] Elle se lève lorsqu'il est encore nuit, elle distribue la nourriture nécessaire à sa maison, et elle [donne] à ses servantes leur tâche.
16 She considereth a field, and procureth it, Out of the fruit of her hands, she planteth a vineyard:
[Zajin.] Elle considère un champ, et l'acquiert; et elle plante la vigne du fruit de ses mains.
17 She girdeth, with strength her loins, and putteth vigour into her arms:
[Heth.] Elle ceint ses reins de force, et fortifie ses bras.
18 She tasteth, whether, good, be her merchandise, and her lamp, goeth not out by night:
[Teth.] Elle éprouve que son trafic est bon; sa lampe ne s'éteint point la nuit.
19 Her hands, she putteth forth to the distaff, and, her palms, lay hold of the spindle:
[Jod.] Elle met ses mains au fuseau, et ses mains tiennent la quenouille.
20 Her palm, she spreadeth out to the oppressed, and, her hands, she extendeth to the needy:
[Caph.] Elle tend sa main à l'affligé, et avance ses mains au nécessiteux.
21 She feareth not, for her household, because of the snow, for, all her household, are clothed with crimson:
[Lamed.] Elle ne craint point la neige pour sa famille, car toute sa famille est vêtue de vêtements doubles.
22 Coverlets, she maketh for herself, Of white linen and of purple, is her clothing:
[Mem.] Elle se fait des tours de lit; le fin lin et l'écarlate est ce dont elle s'habille.
23 Known in the gates, is her husband, when he sitteth, with the elders of the land:
[Nun.] Son mari est reconnu aux portes, quand il est assis avec les Anciens du pays.
24 Fine linen wraps, she maketh and selleth, and, girdles, doth she deliver to the trader:
[Samech.] Elle fait du linge, et le vend; et elle fait des ceintures, qu'elle donne au marchand.
25 Strength and dignity, are her clothing, and she laugheth at the time to come:
[Hajin.] La force et la magnificence est son vêtement, et elle se rit du jour à venir.
26 Her mouth, she openeth with wisdom, and, the instruction of kindness, is on her tongue:
[Pe.] Elle ouvre sa bouche avec sagesse, et la Loi de la charité est sur sa langue.
27 She looketh well to the goings of her household, and, the bread of idleness, will she not eat.
[Tsade.] Elle contemple le train de sa maison, et ne mange point le pain de paresse.
28 Her children rise up, and call her happy! her husband, and he praiseth her: —
[Koph.] Ses enfants se lèvent, et la disent bienheureuse; son mari [aussi], et il la loue, [en disant]:
29 Many daughters, have done virtuously, but, thou, excellest them all!
[Resch.] Plusieurs filles ont été vaillantes; mais tu les surpasses toutes.
30 Deceitful is loveliness and vain is beauty, The woman that revereth Yahweh, she, shall be praised:
[Scin.] La grâce trompe, et la beauté s'évanouit; [mais] la femme qui craint l'Eternel, sera celle qui sera louée.
31 Give her of the fruit of her own hands, and let her own works, praise her in the gates.
[Thau.] Donnez-lui des fruits de ses mains, et que ses œuvres la louent aux portes.
