Proverbs 31
1 The words of Lemuel the king, —the strain which was taught him by his mother: —
Les paroles du roi Lémuel - la révélation que sa mère lui a enseignée:
2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? aye what, the son of my vows?
« Oh, mon fils! Oh, fils de mes entrailles! Oh, fils de mes vœux!
3 Do not give, to women, thy strength, nor thy ways, to them who ruin kings.
Ne donne pas ta force aux femmes, ni vos voies à celles qui détruisent les rois.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor, for dignitaries, to desire strong drink,
Ce n'est pas pour les rois, Lemuel, ce n'est pas aux rois de boire du vin, ni pour les princes de dire: « Où est la boisson forte?
5 Lest he drink, and forget that which is decreed, and alter the plea of any who are sorely oppressed.
de peur qu'ils ne boivent et n'oublient la loi, et pervertissent la justice due à celui qui est affligé.
6 Give strong drink, to him that is perishing, and wine, to such as are embittered in soul:
Donnez une boisson forte à celui qui est prêt à périr, et du vin pour les âmes amères.
7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and, his wearying toil, let him remember no more.
Qu'il boive, et qu'il oublie sa pauvreté, et ne plus se souvenir de sa misère.
8 Open thy mouth for the dumb, for the cause of all the children of the departed.
Ouvrez votre bouche pour le muet, pour la cause de tous ceux qui sont abandonnés.
9 Open thy mouth—judge righteously, —and administer justice for the poor and the needy.
Ouvre ta bouche, juge avec justice, et rendre justice aux pauvres et aux nécessiteux. »
10 A virtuous woman, who can find? for, far beyond corals, is her worth.
Qui peut trouver une femme digne de ce nom? Car sa valeur est bien supérieure à celle des rubis.
11 The heart of her husband, trusteth her, and, gain, he shall not lack:
Le cœur de son mari a confiance en elle. Il ne manquera pas de gain.
12 She doeth him good and not evil, all the days of her life:
Elle lui fait du bien, et non du mal, tous les jours de sa vie.
13 She seeketh wool and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands:
Elle cherche la laine et le lin, et travaille avec ardeur avec ses mains.
14 She is like the ships of the merchant, from afar, she bringeth in her food;
Elle est comme les navires marchands. Elle apporte son pain de loin.
15 And she riseth, while yet it is night, and giveth food to her household, and a task to her maidens:
Elle se lève aussi alors qu'il fait encore nuit, donne de la nourriture à son foyer, et des portions pour ses servantes.
16 She considereth a field, and procureth it, Out of the fruit of her hands, she planteth a vineyard:
Elle considère un champ, et l'achète. Avec le fruit de ses mains, elle plante une vigne.
17 She girdeth, with strength her loins, and putteth vigour into her arms:
Elle arme sa taille avec force, et rend ses bras forts.
18 She tasteth, whether, good, be her merchandise, and her lamp, goeth not out by night:
Elle perçoit que sa marchandise est rentable. Sa lampe ne s'éteint pas la nuit.
19 Her hands, she putteth forth to the distaff, and, her palms, lay hold of the spindle:
Elle pose ses mains sur la quenouille, et ses mains tiennent le fuseau.
20 Her palm, she spreadeth out to the oppressed, and, her hands, she extendeth to the needy:
Elle ouvre ses bras aux pauvres; oui, elle tend les mains aux nécessiteux.
21 She feareth not, for her household, because of the snow, for, all her household, are clothed with crimson:
Elle n'a pas peur de la neige pour sa maison, car toute sa famille est vêtue d'écarlate.
22 Coverlets, she maketh for herself, Of white linen and of purple, is her clothing:
Elle se fait des tapis de tapisserie. Ses vêtements sont en lin fin et de couleur violette.
23 Known in the gates, is her husband, when he sitteth, with the elders of the land:
Son mari est respecté dans les portes, quand il s'assiéra parmi les anciens du pays.
24 Fine linen wraps, she maketh and selleth, and, girdles, doth she deliver to the trader:
Elle fait des vêtements de lin et les vend, et livre les coussins au marchand.
25 Strength and dignity, are her clothing, and she laugheth at the time to come:
La force et la dignité sont ses vêtements. Elle se moque du temps à venir.
26 Her mouth, she openeth with wisdom, and, the instruction of kindness, is on her tongue:
Elle ouvre sa bouche avec sagesse. L'instruction aimable est sur sa langue.
27 She looketh well to the goings of her household, and, the bread of idleness, will she not eat.
Elle s'occupe bien des affaires de sa famille, et ne mange pas le pain de l'oisiveté.
28 Her children rise up, and call her happy! her husband, and he praiseth her: —
Ses enfants se lèvent et la qualifient de bienheureuse. Son mari fait également son éloge:
29 Many daughters, have done virtuously, but, thou, excellest them all!
« Beaucoup de femmes font des choses nobles, mais vous les surpassez tous. »
30 Deceitful is loveliness and vain is beauty, The woman that revereth Yahweh, she, shall be praised:
Le charme est trompeur, et la beauté est vaine; mais une femme qui craint Yahvé, on la louera.
31 Give her of the fruit of her own hands, and let her own works, praise her in the gates.
Donnez-lui du fruit de ses mains! Que ses œuvres la louent dans les portes!
