Proverbs 27
1 Do not boast thyself of to-morrow, for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
Ne te glorifie pas des choses de demain; car tu ne sais pas ce qu'enfantera le jour qui va venir.
2 Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth, a stranger, and not thine own lips.
Que ton prochain te loue, et non ta bouche; qu'un étranger fasse ton éloge, et non tes lèvres.
3 Heavy is a stone, and weighty is sand, —but, the vexation of a fool, is heavier than both.
La pierre est lourde et le sable est difficile à transporter; la colère de l'insensé est plus pesante que la pierre et le sable.
4 The cruelty of rage, and the overflow of anger! But who can stand before, jealousy?
Le courroux est sans pitié, la colère pénétrante; mais l'envie ne peut rien supporter.
5 Better is a rebuke that is open, than love carefully concealed.
Mieux vaut le blâme à découvert que des amitiés cachées.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but lavished are the kisses of an enemy.
Les blessures faites par un ami sont plus dignes de confiance que les baisers d'un ennemi.
7 The surfeited soul, trampleth upon droppings from the comb, but, to the hungry soul, every bitter thing, is sweet.
L'âme dans la satiété ne fait aucun cas d'un rayon de miel; à l'âme affamée tout semble doux, même les choses amères.
8 As a bird wandering from her nest, so, is a man wandering from his place.
L'homme qui s'est expatrié est réduit en esclavage, comme le petit oiseau tombé de son nid.
9 Oil and perfume, rejoice the heart, the sweetness of one’s friend, more than fragrant wood.
Le cœur se réjouit du vin, des parfums et de l'encens; mais l'âme est déchirée par les malheurs.
10 Thine own friend and thy father’s friend, do not thou forsake; but, the house of thy brother, do not enter, in thy day of calamity, Better a neighbour near, than a brother far off.
N'abandonne point ton ami ni l'ami de ton père; si tu es en détresse, n'entre point dans la maison de ton frère; mieux vaut un ami auprès de toi qu'un frère qui demeure au loin.
11 Be wise, my son, and rejoice my heart, that I may answer him that reproacheth me in a matter.
Sois sage, ô mon fils, afin que ton cœur se réjouisse; éloigne de toi les paroles de blâme.
12 A prudent man, seeth calamity—he hideth himself, the simple, pass on—they suffer.
L'homme habile, à l'approche d'un malheur, se tient caché; mais les insensés courent au-devant, et en portent la peine.
13 Take a man’s garment when he hath become pledge for a stranger, then, for a female unknown, accept him as surety.
Ôte son manteau à quiconque ravage le champ d'autrui; car c'est un méchant qui a passé là.
14 He that blesseth his friend, with a loud voice, in the morning early, a reproach, shall it be reckoned to him.
Celui qui bénira son ami à haute voix, dès l'aurore, semblera ne différer en rien de celui qui le maudit.
15 A continuous dripping on a day of downpour, and a contentious wife, are alike:
La pluie, en hiver, tombant dans une maison en chasse le maître; il en est de même d'une femme querelleuse dans sa propre maison.
16 He that hideth her, hideth the wind, and, perfume, his right hand may proclaim.
L'aquilon est un vent rigoureux, et pourtant il est réputé de bon augure.
17 Let, iron, by iron, become sharp, and let, a man, sharpen the face of his friend.
Le fer aiguise le fer; ainsi l'ami ranime le visage de son ami.
18 He that guardeth the fig-tree, shall eat the fruit thereof, and, he that watcheth over his master, shall be honoured.
Qui plante un figuier en mange les fruits; qui barde son maître sera honoré.
19 As in water, face [answereth] to face, so, the heart of man to man.
Les visages ne ressemblent point aux visages; ainsi en est-il des pensées des hommes.
20 Hades and destruction, are not satisfied, and, the eyes of a man, are not satisfied. (Sheol h7585)
L'enfer et la perdition ne sont jamais rassasiés; de même les yeux des hommes sont insatiables; (Sheol h7585)
21 Fining pot for silver, and crucible for gold, and, a man, [is to be tried] by what he praiseth.
On éprouve par le feu l'or et l'argent; l'épreuve de l'homme est la bouche de ceux qui le louent.
22 Though thou pound a fool in a mortar, amidst grain, with a pestle, his folly, will not depart from him.
Tu auras beau flageller en pleine assemblée l'imprudent qui se déshonore, tu ne lui ôteras point son imprudence.
23 Note well, the appearance of thy flock, apply thy mind to thy herds;
Apprends à bien connaître les besoins de tes brebis, et applique ton cœur au soin de tes grands troupeaux.
24 For, not age-abiding, are riches, nor is the diadem, from generation to generation: —
La force et le pouvoir de l'homme de durent pas des siècles; ils ne passent pas de génération en génération.
25 The grass, is taken away, and the young shoot, showeth itself, and the herbage of the mountains, is gathered;
Occupe-toi de l'herbe des champs; fauche tes près et recueille du fourrage durant l'été.
26 There are, lambs, for thy clothing, and, for the price of thy field, there are he-goats;
Si tu veux avoir des brebis pour te vêtir, cultive tes champs pour avoir des agneaux.
27 With, enough goats-milk, for thy food—for the food of thy household, and, a maintenance, for thy maidens.
Mon fils, tu tiens de moi des préceptes sûrs pour ta vie et pour la vie de tes serviteurs.
