Proverbs 25
1 These also, are proverbs of Solomon, —which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah transcribed.

2 The glory of God, is to conceal a thing, but, the glory of kings, is to search out a thing.
C'est la gloire de Dieu de dissimuler une chose, mais la gloire des rois est de rechercher une affaire.
3 The heavens for height, and the earth for depth, but, the heart of kings, cannot be searched.
Comme les cieux pour la hauteur, et la terre pour la profondeur, ainsi le cœur des rois est insondable.
4 Remove the dross from the silver, and there cometh forth, to the refiner, a vessel:
Enlevez les scories de l'argent, et la matière sort pour le raffineur.
5 Remove a lawless man from before the king, that his throne, may be established in righteousness.
Éloignez les méchants de la présence du roi, et son trône sera établi dans la justice.
6 Do not honour thyself before a king, nor, in the place of great men, do thou stand;
Ne t'exalte pas en présence du roi, ou de revendiquer une place parmi les grands hommes;
7 For better it be said to thee, Come up hither, —than that thou be put lower down before a noble, whom thine own eyes, have beheld.
car il vaut mieux qu'on te dise: « Monte ici ». que de vous rabaisser en présence du prince, que tes yeux ont vu.
8 Do not go forth to strive in haste, —lest [thou know not] what to do in the latter end thereof, when thy neighbour, hath put thee to shame.
Ne vous empressez pas de porter des accusations devant le tribunal. Que ferez-vous à la fin quand votre voisin vous fera honte?
9 Thy contention, urge thou with thy neighbour, and, the secret of another, do not reveal:
Débattez de votre cas avec votre voisin, et ne pas trahir la confiance d'un autre,
10 Lest he that heareth expose thee, and, the report concerning thee, turn not away.
de peur que celui qui l'entende ne vous fasse honte, et votre mauvaise réputation ne partira jamais.
11 Golden fruit in figured silver baskets, is a word spoken on fitting occasion.
Une parole juste est comme des pommes d'or dans une monture d'argent.
12 A ring of gold, and a vessel of precious metal, is a wise reprover, on a hearing ear.
Comme une boucle d'oreille d'or, et une parure d'or fin, de même qu'un sage réprobateur à une oreille obéissante.
13 As the cold of snow in the day of harvest, is a faithful messenger to them who send him, —when, the life of his masters, he restoreth.
Comme le froid de la neige au temps de la moisson, ainsi est un messager fidèle à ceux qui l'envoient; car il rafraîchit l'âme de ses maîtres.
14 Clouds and wind, when rain there is none, is the man who boasteth himself of a pretended gift.
Comme des nuages et du vent sans pluie, il en est de même pour celui qui se vante de ses dons de manière trompeuse.
15 By long patience, is a judge persuaded, and, a soft tongue, breaketh the bone.
C'est par la patience que le chef se laisse convaincre. Une langue douce brise l'os.
16 Honey having found, eat to suffice thee, lest thou loathe it, and vomit it forth.
Avez-vous trouvé du miel? Mangez autant qu'il vous suffit, de peur que vous ne mangiez trop et ne vomissiez.
17 Withhold thy foot from the house of thy neighbour, —lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.
Que ton pied soit rarement dans la maison de ton prochain, de peur qu'il ne se lasse de vous et ne vous haïsse.
18 A hammer and a sword, and a sharpened arrow, is a man becoming a false witness against his neighbour.
Un homme qui porte un faux témoignage contre son prochain est comme une massue, une épée, ou une flèche acérée.
19 A broken tooth and a faltering foot, is confidence in the treacherous, in the day of danger.
Confiance en quelqu'un d'infidèle en temps de difficulté est comme une mauvaise dent ou un pied boiteux.
20 As splendour of dress on a cold day—vinegar upon nitre, so is a singer with songs, unto a sad heart.
Comme celui qui enlève un vêtement par temps froid, ou du vinaigre sur du soda, ainsi est celui qui chante des chansons à un cœur lourd.
21 If he that hateth thee hunger, give him bread to eat, and, if he be thirsty, give him water to drink;
Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui à manger. S'il a soif, donnez-lui de l'eau à boire;
22 For, burning coals, shalt thou be heaping upon his head, —and, Yahweh, will repay thee.
car tu amasseras des charbons ardents sur sa tête, et Yahvé vous récompensera.
23 A north wind, bringeth forth rain, and, a face stirred with indignation, a secretive tongue.
Le vent du nord produit de la pluie; ainsi une langue médisante amène un visage en colère.
24 Better to dwell on the corner of the roof, than a quarrelsome wife, and a house in common.
Il vaut mieux habiter à l'angle du toit. que de partager une maison avec une femme querelleuse.
25 As cold water to a thirsty soul, so is a good report from a far country.
Comme de l'eau froide pour une âme assoiffée, C'est une bonne nouvelle venant d'un pays lointain.
26 A fountain fouled, a spring spoiled, is a righteous man tottering before one who is lawless.
Comme une source boueuse et un puits pollué, ainsi est un homme juste qui cède devant les méchants.
27 To eat honey in abundance, is not good, nor is, searching out their own honour, an honourable thing.
Il n'est pas bon de manger beaucoup de miel, Il n'est pas non plus honorable de chercher son propre honneur.
28 A city broken down without a wall, is a man who hath no control over his own spirit.
Comme une ville démolie et sans murs est un homme dont l'esprit est sans retenue.
