Proverbs 16
1 To man, belong the preparations of the heart, but, from Yahweh, cometh the answer of the tongue.
Ko nga whakatakataka a te ngakau na te tangata; engari ko te kupu whakahoki a te arero na Ihowa.
2 All the ways of a man, [may be] pure in his own eyes, but, he that testeth spirits, is Yahweh.
Ko nga ara katoa o te tangata he ma ki ona ake kanohi; ko Ihowa ia ki te pauna i nga wairua.
3 Roll, upon Yahweh, thy doings, that thy plans, may be established.
Utaina au mahi ki runga ki a Ihowa, a ka whakapumautia ou whakaaro.
4 Everything, hath Yahweh made for its own purpose, yea, even the lawless one, for the day of calamity.
He mea hanga na Ihowa nga mea katoa mo tona tutukitanga, mo tona: ae ra, ko te tangata kino hoki mo te ra o te kino.
5 An abomination to Yahweh, is every one who is haughty in heart, hand to hand, he shall not be held innocent.
He mea whakarihariha na Ihowa te hunga ngakau whakakake katoa; ahakoa pupuri te ringa ki te ringa, e kore ia e kore te whiua.
6 By lovingkindness and fidelity, shall iniquity be covered, and, in the revering of Yahweh, is a turning away from wrong.
Ko te mahi tohu tangata me te pono hei pure mo te kino; ma te wehi hoki ki a Ihowa ka mawehe atu ai te tangata i te kino.
7 When, acceptable to Yahweh, are the ways of a man, even his enemies, doth he cause to make peace with him.
Ki te pai a Ihowa ki nga ara o te tangata, ka meinga e ia ona hoariri nei ano kia mau te rongo ki a ia.
8 Better a little with righteousness, than large revenues, without justice.
He pai ake te mea iti i runga i te tika, i nga hua maha ki te kahore he tika.
9 A man’s heart, deviseth his way, but, Yahweh, directeth his steps.
Ko te ngakau o te tangata hei whakaaro i tona ara; ko Ihowa ia hei whakatika i tona hikoi.
10 An oracle, is on the lips of a king, in giving sentence, his mouth must not be unfaithful.
He kupu atua kei nga ngutu o te kingi; e kore tona mangai e poka ke ina whakawa.
11 The balance and scales of justice, belong to Yahweh, and, his handiwork, are all the weights of the bag.
Ko te taimaha tika, ko te pauna tika, na Ihowa; he mahi nana nga kohatu katoa o te putea.
12 The abomination of kings, is to work lawlessness, for, by righteousness, is established a throne.
He mea whakarihariha ki nga kingi te mahi i te kino; na te tika hoki i u ai te torona.
13 The delight of kings, are lips of righteousness, —and, the words of uprightness, he loveth.
He mea ahuareka ki nga kingi nga ngutu tika: e aroha ana hoki ratou ki te tangata e korero tika ana.
14 The wrath of a king, [meaneth] messengers of death, but, a man who is wise, will appease it.
Ko te riri o te kingi ano he karere mo te mate: engari ka whakamarietia e te tangata whakaaro nui.
15 In the light of a king’s countenance, is life, and, his good-pleasure, is like the cloud of harvest-rain.
He ora kei te marama o te mata o te kingi: a ko tana manako he rite ki te kapua o to muri ua.
16 To acquire wisdom, how much better than gold! and, to get hold of understanding, more choice than silver!
Ko te whiwhi ki te whakaaro nui, ano te pai! pai atu i te whiwhi ki te koura; ko te whiwhi hoki ki te matauranga te mea e hiahiatia nuitia atu i te hiriwa.
17 The highway of the upright, is to avoid evil, He preserveth his soul, who guardeth his way.
Ko te huanui o te hunga tika he mawehe atu i te kino: ko te tangata e whai whakaaro ana ki tona ara, ka mau tona wairua.
18 Before grievous injury, pride! and, before a fall, haughtiness of spirit!
Haere ai te whakakake i mua o te whakangaromanga, te wairua whakapehapeha i mua i te hinganga.
19 Better is lowliness of spirit, with the patient, than a portion of spoil, with the proud.
Ko te ngakau whakaiti i waenga i te hunga rawakore, pai atu i te uru ki te tuwahanga taonga a te hunga whakakake.
20 He that showeth discretion concerning a matter, shall find good, and, he that trusteth in Yahweh, how happy is he!
Ko te tangata e tahuri ana ki te kupu, ka kite i te pai: a ko te tangata e whakawhirinaki ana ki a Ihowa, ka hari.
21 The wise in heart, shall be called intelligent, and, sweetness of lips, increaseth persuasiveness.
Ka kiia te whakaaro nui he matau; ma te reka hoki o nga ngutu ka neke ai te mohio.
22 A well-spring of life, is discretion to its owner, but, the correction of the foolish, is folly.
Ko te matauranga te puna o te ora mo te tangata i whiwhi ki tera; ko te ako ia mo te hunga wairangi ko to ratou wairangi ano.
23 The heart of the wise, giveth discretion to his mouth, and, upon his lips, increaseth persuasiveness.
Ma te ngakau o te tangata whakaaro nui e tohutohu tona mangai, e apiti hoki he kupu mohio ki ona ngutu.
24 A comb of honey, are pleasant words, sweet to the taste and healing to the bone.
Ko nga kupu matareka ano kei te honikoma, he reka ki te wairua, he rongoa ki nga wheua.
25 There is a way that enticeth a man, but, at the latter end thereof, are the ways of death.
Tera he ara e tika ana ki te titiro a te tangata; ko tona mutunga ia ko nga ara ki te mate.
26 The appetite of the toiler, hath toiled for him, for his mouth, hath urged him on.
Ko te hiahia o te tangata e mahi ana, e mahi ana mona; no te mea e akiakina ana ia e tona mangai.
27 An abandoned man, diggeth up mischief, —and, upon his lips, as it were a fire is scorching.
E whakatakoto ana te tangata tikangakore i te kino, a kei ona ngutu ano he ahi e ka ana.
28 A perverse man, sendeth forth strife, and, a tattler, separateth intimate friends.
Ko ta te tangata whanoke he titaritari i te raruraru; ko ta te tangata kawekawe korero he wehewehe i nga hoa tupu.
29 A ruthless man, enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him in a way, not good.
Whakawai ai te tangata nanakia i tona hoa, kawe ai i a ia ki te huarahi kahore i pai.
30 Closing his eyes, to devise perverse things, biting his lips, he hath plotted mischief.
Ko te tangata e whakamoe ana i ona kanohi, e mea ana kia whakaaroa ai e ia nga mea whanoke; ko te tangata e kokopi ana i ona ngutu e whakatutuki ana i te kino.
31 A crown of adorning, is a hoary head, in the way of righteousness, it should be found.
He karauna kororia te mahunga hina, e ka kitea i runga i te ara o te tika.
32 Better he that is slow to anger, than a hero, and he that ruleth his spirit, than he that captureth a city.
Engari rawa te tangata manawanui i te tangata kaha, te tangata e pehia ana e ia tona wairua i te tangata i horo ai te pa.
33 Into the lap, is cast the lot, but, from Yahweh, is its every decision.
E maka ana te rota ki roto ki te kokorutanga o te kakahu; kei a Ihowa ia te tikanga katoa.
