Numbers 32
1 Now, much cattle, had come into the possession of the sons of Reuben and of the sons of Gad, an exceeding mighty number. And when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, lo! the place, was a place for cattle.
Or les enfants de Ruben et les enfants de Gad avaient beaucoup de bétail, et en fort grande quantité; et ayant vu le pays de Jahzer, et le pays de Galaad, voici, [ils remarquèrent que] ce lieu-là était propre à tenir du bétail.
2 So the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came in, —and spake unto Moses and unto Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of assembly, saying,
Ainsi les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Ruben vinrent, et parlèrent à Moïse et à Eléazar le Sacrificateur, et aux principaux de l'assemblée, en disant:
3 As touching Ataroth and Dibon, and Jazer and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, —and Sebam and Nebo, and Beon-
Hataroth, et Dibon, et Jahzer, et Nimrah, et Hesbon, et Elhaleh, et Sébam, et Nébo, et Béhon;
4 the land which Yahweh smote before the assembly of Israel, a land for cattle, it is, —and, thy servants, have cattle.
Ce pays-là, que l'Eternel a frappé devant l'assemblée d'Israël, est un pays propre à tenir du bétail, et tes serviteurs ont du bétail.
5 And they said—If we have found favour in thine eyes, let this land be given unto thy servants, for a possession, —do not take us over the Jordan.
Ils dirent donc: Si nous avons trouvé grâce devant toi, que ce pays soit donné à tes serviteurs en possession; [et] ne nous fais point passer le Jourdain.
6 Then said Moses unto the sons of Gad and unto the sons of Reuben, —Shall, your brethren, go into the war, and ye, settle down here?
Mais Moïse répondit aux enfants de Gad, et aux enfants de Ruben: Vos frères iront-ils à la guerre, et vous demeurerez-vous ici?
7 Wherefore, then, should ye dissuade the heart of the sons of Israel, from passing over into the land which Yahweh hath given to them?
Pourquoi faites-vous perdre courage aux enfants d'Israël, pour ne point passer au pays que l'Eternel leur a donné?
8 Thus, did your fathers, —when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea, to view the land,
C'est ainsi que firent vos pères quand je les envoyai de Kadès-barné pour reconnaître le pays.
9 and they went up as far as the ravine of Eschol, and viewed the land, and then dissuaded the heart of the sons of Israel from entering into the land, which Yahweh had given them.
Car ils montèrent jusqu'à la vallée d'Escol, et virent le pays, puis ils firent perdre courage aux enfants d'Israël, afin qu'ils n'entrassent point au pays que l'Eternel leur avait donné.
10 Then was the anger of Yahweh kindled on that day, —and he sware, saying:
C'est pourquoi la colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma en ce jour-là, et il jura, en disant:
11 Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt from twenty years old and upwards, shall see the soil, which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac and unto Jacob, because they have not followed after me fully;
Si les hommes qui sont montés [hors] d'Egypte, depuis l'âge de vingt ans, et au dessus, voient le pays pour lequel j'ai juré à Abraham, à Isaac, et à Jacob; car ils n'ont point persévéré à me suivre.
12 save Caleb son of Jephunneh, the Kenezite, and Joshua, son of Nun, —for they followed after Yahweh, fully.
Excepté Caleb, fils de Jéphunné Kénisien, et Josué fils de Nun; car ils ont persévéré à suivre l'Eternel.
13 So the anger of Yahweh kindled upon Israel, and he made them wander in the desert, forty years, —until all the generation who had done the evil in the eyes of Yahweh, had wasted away!
Ainsi la colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël, et il les a fait errer par le désert, quarante ans, jusqu'à ce que toute la génération qui avait fait ce qui déplaisait à l'Eternel, ait été consumée.
14 Lo! therefore, ye have arisen in the room of your fathers, a brood of sinful men, —to heap up yet more upon the heat of the anger of Yahweh, towards Israel.
Et voici, vous vous êtes mis en la place de vos pères, comme une race d'hommes pécheurs, pour augmenter encore l'ardeur de la colère de l'Eternel contre Israël.
15 If ye do turn away from following him, then will he yet again leave them behind in the desert, —so shall ye bring destruction upon all this people.
Que si vous vous détournez de lui, il continuera encore à le laisser au désert, et vous ferez détruire tout ce peuple.
16 Then came they near unto him, and said, Folds, for flocks, would we build for our cattle, here, —and cities for our little ones;
Mais ils s'approchèrent de lui, et lui dirent: Nous bâtirons ici des cloisons pour nos troupeaux, et les villes seront pour nos familles.
17 but, we, would arm ourselves promptly, before the sons of Israel, until that we have brought them into their place, —so should our little ones remain in the fortified cities, because of the inhabitants of the land.
Et nous nous équiperons pour marcher promptement devant les enfants d'Israël, jusqu'à ce que nous les ayons introduits en leur lieu; mais nos familles demeureront dans les villes murées, à cause des habitants du pays.
18 We would not return unto our houses, —until the sons of Israel have possessed themselves each man, of his inheritance.
Nous ne retournerons point en nos maisons que chacun des enfants d'Israël n'ait pris possession de son héritage;
19 For we would not inherit with them, over the Jordan, and onwards, —because our inheritance hath come unto us on this side the Jordan towards sunrise.
Et nous ne posséderons rien en héritage avec eux au delà du Jourdain, ni plus avant; parce que notre héritage nous sera échu au deçà du Jourdain vers l'Orient.
20 And Moses said unto them, If ye will indeed do this thing, —if ye will arm yourselves, before Yahweh, for the war;
Et Moïse leur dit: Si vous faites cela, et que vous vous équipiez devant l'Eternel pour aller à la guerre;
21 and every armed man of you pass over the Jordan before Yahweh, —until he hath dispossessed his enemies, from before him;
Et que chacun de vous étant équipé passe le Jourdain devant l'Eternel, jusqu'à ce qu'il ait chassé ses ennemis de devant soi;
22 and the land be subdued before Yahweh then afterwards, shall ye return, and shall be acquitted by Yahweh and by Israel, —and this land shall be yours for a possession before Yahweh.
Et que le pays soit subjugué devant l'Eternel, et qu'ensuite vous vous en retourniez, alors vous serez innocents envers l'Eternel, et envers Israël; et ce pays-ci vous appartiendra pour le posséder devant l'Eternel.
23 But, if ye shall not do this, lo! ye will have sinned against Yahweh, —and take note of your sin, that it will find you out.
Mais si vous ne faites point cela, voici, vous aurez péché contre l'Eternel; et sachez que votre péché vous trouvera.
24 Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your flocks, —and then that which hath gone forth from your mouth, ye shall do.
Bâtissez donc des villes pour vos familles; et des cloisons pour vos troupeaux, et faites ce que vous avez dit.
25 Then spake the sons of Gad, and the sons of Reuben unto Moses, saying, —thy servants, will do, as, my lord, is giving command.
Alors les enfants de Gad, et les enfants de Ruben parlèrent à Moïse, en disant: Tes serviteurs feront comme mon Seigneur l'a commandé.
26 Our little ones, our wives, our cattle, and all our beasts, shall remain there in the cities of Gilead;
Nos petits enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux, et toutes nos bêtes demeureront ici dans les villes de Galaad.
27 and thy servants, will pass over every one armed for war, before Yahweh to battle, —as, my lord is speaking.
Et tes serviteurs passeront chacun armé pour aller à la guerre devant l'Eternel, prêts à combattre, comme mon Seigneur a parlé.
28 So Moses gave command concerning them, unto Eleazar the priest and unto Joshua son of Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes, of the sons of Israel;
Alors Moïse commanda touchant eux à Eléazar le Sacrificateur, à Josué, fils de Nun, et aux chefs des pères des Tribus des enfants d'Israël;
29 and Moses said unto them—If the sons of Gad and the son of Reuben will pass with you over the Jordan, every one armed for the war before Yahweh, and the land be subdued before you, then shall ye give unto them the land of Gilead, for a possession.
Et leur dit: Si les enfants de Gad et les enfants de Ruben passent avec vous le Jourdain tous armés, prêts à combattre devant l'Eternel, et que le pays vous soit assujetti, vous leur donnerez le pays de Galaad en possession.
30 But, if they will not pass over armed, with you, then shall they accept a possession in your midst, in the land of Canaan.
Mais s'ils ne passent point en armes avec vous, ils auront une possession parmi vous au pays de Canaan.
31 Then responded the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, saying, —That which Yahweh had spoken unto thy servants, so, will we do.
Et les enfants de Gad, et les enfants de Ruben répondirent, en disant: Nous ferons ainsi que l'Eternel a parlé à tes serviteurs.
32 We, will pass over armed, before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, —then shall be ours, the possession of our inheritance across the Jordan.
Nous passerons en armes devant l'Eternel au pays de Canaan, afin que nous possédions pour notre héritage ce qui est deçà le Jourdain.
33 So then Moses gave unto them even unto the sons of Gad and unto the sons of Reuben and unto the half tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of sihon, king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og, the king of Bashan, the land by her cities with boundaries, even the cities of the land round about.
Ainsi Moïse donna aux enfants de Gad, et aux enfants de Ruben, et à la demi-Tribu de Manassé, fils de Joseph, le Royaume de Sihon, Roi des Amorrhéens; et le Royaume de Hog, Roi de Basan, le pays avec ses villes, selon les bornes des villes du pays à l'environ.
34 And the sons of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, —and Aroer;
Alors les enfants de Gad rebâtirent Dibon, Hataroth, Haroher,
35 and Atroth-shophan and Jazer, and Jogbehah;
Hatroth-Sophan, Jahzer, Jogbéha,
36 and Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, —fortified cities and folds for flocks.
Beth-nimrah, et Beth-haran, villes murées. Ils firent aussi des cloisons pour les troupeaux.
37 And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, —and Kiriathaim,
Et les enfants de Ruben rebâtirent Hesbon, Elhalé, Kirjathajim,
38 and Nebo and Baal-meon—their names being changed, and Sibmah, —and they gave names to the cities which they built.
Nébo, et Bahal-méhon, et Sibma; dont ils changèrent les noms, et ils donnèrent des noms aux villes qu'ils rebâtirent.
39 Then went the sons of Machir son of Manasseh to Gilead, and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were therein,
Or les enfants de Makir, fils de Manassé, allèrent en Galaad, et le prirent, et dépossédèrent les Amorrhéens qui y étaient.
40 So Moses gave Gilead unto Machir son of Manasseh, and he dwelt therein.
Moïse donc donna Galaad à Makir, fils de Manassé, qui y habita.
41 And Jair, son of Manasseh, went, and captured their encampments, —and called them Havvoth-jair ["The encampments of Jair"].
Jaïr aussi fils de Manassé, s'en alla, et prit leurs bourgs, et les appela bourgs de Jaïr.
42 And, Nobah, went, and captured Kenath, with the villages thereof, —and called it Nobah, after his own name.
Et Nobah s'en alla, et prit Kénath avec les villes de son ressort, et l'appela Nobah de son nom.
