Numbers 14
1 Then did all the assembly lift up, and give forth their voice, —and the people wept throughout that night.
Alors toute l'Assemblée élevant la voix poussa une clameur, et le peuple passa la nuit à pleurer.
2 And all the sons of Israel, murmured against Moses and against Aaron, —and all the assembly said unto them—Oh that we had died in the land of Egypt, Or in this wilderness, oh that we had died!
Et tous les enfants d'Israël murmurèrent contre Moïse et contre Aaron et toute l'Assemblée leur dit: Que ne sommes-nous morts dans le pays d'Egypte, ou que ne mourons-nous dans ce désert-ci!
3 Wherefore then is Yahweh bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and little ones, will become a prey! Would it not be well for us to go back towards Egypt?
Pourquoi l'Éternel nous mène-t-Il dans ce pays-là pour y périr par l'épée? nos femmes et nos enfants serviront de proie. Ne vaut-il pas mieux pour nous retourner en Egypte?
4 And they said, one to another, —Let us appoint a head and let us go back towards Egypt.
Et ils se disaient l'un à l'autre: Prenons un chef et retournons en Egypte.
5 Then did Moses and Aaron fall upon their faces, —before all the convocation of the assembly of the sons of Israel.
Alors Moïse et Aaron se jetèrent face contre terre devant toute l'assemblée réunie des enfants d'Israël,
6 But, Joshua son of Nun, and Caleb son of Jephunneh, of them who spied out the land, rent their clothes;
et Josué, fils de Nun, et Caleb, fils de Jephunneh, du nombre des éclaireurs, déchirèrent leurs vêtements,
7 and spake unto all the assembly of the sons of Israel, saying, —As for the land through which we passed to spy it out, Good, is the land, exceedingly,
et adressèrent à toute l'Assemblée des enfants d'Israël ces paroles: Le pays que nous avons parcouru pour le reconnaître, est un très bon, très bon pays.
8 If Yahweh delight in us, then will he bring us into this land, and give it unto us, —A land which doth flow with milk and honey.
Si l'Éternel nous est propice, Il nous introduira dans ce pays-là, et nous la donnera, cette terre découlante de lait et de miel.
9 Only against Yahweh, do not rebel. Do not, ye, fear the people of the land, For our food, they are, —Their shade hath departed, from over them. And Yahweh is with us, Do not fear them!
Seulement ne vous révoltez-pas contre l'Éternel, et n'ayez pas peur du peuple du pays, car ce sera pour nous du pain à manger; leur ombrage leur a été retiré, et l'Éternel est avec nous: n'ayez point de peur.
10 But when all the assembly bade stone them with stones, the glory of Yahweh, appeared, in the tent of meeting, unto all the sons of Israel.
Alors toute l'Assemblée parlait de les lapider. Mais la Gloire de l'Éternel apparut dans la Tente du Rendez-vous devant tous les enfants d'Israël.
11 Then said Yahweh unto Moses How long! must this people, despise me? And how long can they not believe in me. in view of all the signs which I have done in their midst?
Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Jusques à quand ce peuple me méprisera-t-il? Et jusques à quand me refusera-t-il sa foi malgré les miracles que j'ai accomplis dans son sein?
12 Let me smite them with pestilence, and disinherit them, —And make thee into a nation greater and more mighty than they!
Je veux le frapper de la peste et le déshériter et faire de toi un peuple plus grand et plus puissant que lui.
13 Then said Moses unto Yahweh, —So shall the Egyptians hear, For thou hast brought up. in thy might, this people out of their midst;
Et Moïse dit à l'Éternel: Mais ils l'apprendront, les Égyptiens du milieu desquels tu as tiré ce peuple par ta puissance,
14 And will tell it unto the inhabitants of this land: They have heard, That, thou, Yahweh, art in the midst of this people, —That eye to eye, is he seen—thou, Yahweh, And thy cloud, is standing over them, And in a pillar of cloud, thou thyself, art going on before them by day, And in a pillar of fire, by night.
et ils le diront aux habitants de ce pays qui ont appris que toi, l'Éternel, tu es au milieu de ce peuple, que tu te fais voir face à face, toi, l'Éternel, que ta nuée les couvre, que tu marches devant eux le jour dans la colonne de nuée, et la nuit dans la colonne de feu;
15 As soon, therefore, as thou hast put to death this people as one man, so soon will the nations who have heard thy fame speak saying:
or, si tu fais mourir ce peuple comme un seul homme, ces nations dont ta renommée a frappé les oreilles, diront:
16 Because Yahweh, was not able, to bring in this people into the land which he had sworn unto them, therefore did he slay them in the desert.
C'est faute de pouvoir conduire ce peuple dans le pays qu'il leur promit par serment que l'Éternel l'a massacré dans le désert.
17 Now, therefore, I beseech thee let the might of My Lord, be magnified, —according as thou didst speak saying:
Maintenant donc qu'on voie dans sa grandeur la puissance du Seigneur, comme tu l'as promis en disant:
18 Yahweh—slow to anger and great in lovingkindness, Forgiving iniquity and transgression: Though he will not leave, wholly unpunished, Visiting the iniquity of fathers upon sons, Upon a third generation, and upon a fourth.
l'Éternel est lent à s'irriter et riche d'amour, il accorde le pardon de la faute et du péché, mais ne laisse pas quitte, impuni; Il châtie le crime des pères sur les enfants de la troisième et sur ceux de la quatrième génération.
19 Pardon I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people, According to the greatness of thy lovingkindness, —And according as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even thus far.
Remets donc sa faute à ce peuple selon la grandeur de ton amour et comme tu lui as pardonné depuis l'Egypte jusques ici.
20 And Yahweh said, I have pardoned according to thy word;
Et l'Éternel dit: Je pardonne en tes propres termes;
21 Nevertheless as I live, —and that all the earth may be filled with the glory of Yahweh,
et aussi vrai que je suis Vivant et que toute la terre est pleine de ma magnificence,
22 Verily, none of the men who have been beholding my glory and my signs, which I have done in Egypt and in the desert, —and have put me to the proof these ten times, and have not hearkened unto my voice,
aucun des hommes qui ont vu ma gloire et les miracles opérés par moi en Egypte et au désert, et m'ont tenté voici déjà dix fois et n'ont pas écouté ma voix,
23 shall see the land, which I sware to their fathers, —yea, none of my despisers, shall see it.
ne verra le pays que j'ai promis par serment à leurs pères, aucun de mes contempteurs ne le verra.
24 But my servant Caleb—because there was another spirit with him, and he followed me fully, therefore will I bring him into the land whereinto he entered, and his seed, shall possess it.
Mais mon serviteur Caleb qui est animé d'un autre esprit, et m'a pleinement obéi, je l'introduirai dans le pays où il a pénétré et sa race le possédera.
25 Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites, are dwelling in the valley, —to-morrow, turn ye away; and set yourselves forward towards the desert by the way of the Red Sea.
Cependant les Amalécites et les Cananéens occupent la vallée; demain par une conversion repliez-vous dans le désert dans la direction de la Mer aux algues.
26 Then spake Yahweh unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying:
Et l'Éternel parla à Moïse et Aaron en ces termes:
27 How long, as regardeth this evil assembly, are they to be murmuring against me? The murmuring of the sons of Israel which, they, have been murmuring against me, have I heard,
Jusques à quand [pardonnerai-je] à cette Assemblée perverse qui murmure contre moi? J'ai entendu les murmures des enfants d'Israël comme ils ont murmuré contre moi.
28 Say unto them: As I live, is the oracle of Yahweh: Surely as ye have spoken in mine ears, so, will I do unto you: —
Dis-leur: Aussi vrai que je suis Vivant, prononce l'Éternel, ainsi que vous avez parlé à mes oreilles, ainsi je vous traiterai.
29 In this desert, shall your dead bodies fall And none of you who were numbered in all your counting, from twenty years old and upwards, —who have murmured against me,
Vous laisserez vos cadavres dans ce désert, vous tous, hommes de vingt ans et au-dessus enregistrés en totalité, qui avez murmuré contre moi.
30 none of you, shall enter into the land, as to which I uplifted my hand to give you an abode therein, —save Caleb son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun:
Vous n'entrerez pas dans le pays où la main levée je promis de vous établir, excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunneh, et Josué, fils de Nun.
31 whereas, your little ones, of whom ye said, they should become, a prey, I will bring them in, and they shall acknowledge the land which ye refused.
Et vos enfants dont vous avez dit: ils serviront de proie, je les y introduirai, et ils connaîtront le pays que vous avez dédaigné.
32 But, your own dead bodies, shall fall in this desert;
Mais vous, vous laisserez vos cadavres dans ce désert-ci,
33 and your sons, shall be shepherds in the desert forty years, and shall bear your unchastities, —until your dead bodies are consumed in the desert.
et vos fils resteront dans ce désert comme pasteurs pendant quarante ans, et ils porteront la peine de vos prostitutions, jusqu'à ce que vos cadavres soient au complet dans le désert.
34 By the number of the days wherein ye spied out the land—forty days, each day for a year, shall they bear your iniquities—forty years, —so shall ye know my opposition.
Et autant de jours vous avez mis à reconnaître le pays, quarante jours, autant d'années, une année pour un jour, vous porterez la peine de vos crimes, quarante ans, et sentirez ma disgrâce.
35 I—Yahweh, have spoken, Verily this, will I do to all this evil assembly, who have conspired against me, —In this desert, shall they be consumed And there, shall they die.
Moi l'Éternel j'ai parlé: oui, ainsi je traiterai cette Assemblée perverse qui s'est liguée contre moi: ils seront consumés dans ce désert-ci et y mourront.
36 Now as for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, —who returned and caused all the assembly to murmur against him by giving out a rumour against the land,
Et les hommes que Moïse avait envoyés pour reconnaître le pays, et qui à leur retour avaient excité toute l'assemblée à murmurer contre lui en répandant des propos pour décrier le pays,
37 they died—the men who gave out an evil rumour of the land, —by the plague, before Yahweh.
ces hommes qui en répandant des propos avaient décrié le pays, moururent frappés d'une plaie devant l'Éternel.
38 But, Joshua son of Nun, and Caleb son of Jephunneh! remained alive—of those men who went to spy out the land.
Mais Josué, fils de Nun, et Caleb, fils de Jephunneh, survécurent à ces hommes qui étaient allés reconnaître le pays.
39 And Moses spake these words unto all the sons of Israel, and the people were greatly depressed.
Et Moïse dit toutes ces paroles à tous les enfants d'Israël, et le peuple fut dans un deuil profond.
40 So they arose early in the morning, and went up into the top of the mountain, saying, —We are here—therefore will we go up into the place as to which Yahweh hath said that we have sinned.
Et le matin ils se levèrent et montèrent au sommet de la montagne en disant: Nous voici prêts à gagner le lieu qu'a dit l'Éternel; car nous avons péché.
41 But Moses said, Wherefore is it that, ye, are going beyond the bidding of Yahweh, —since that cannot prosper?
Alors Moïse dit: Pourquoi voulez-vous transgresser l'ordre de l'Éternel? cela ne vous réussira pas!
42 Do not go up, For Yahweh is not in your midst, —Lest ye be smitten down before your enemies.
Ne montez pas! car l'Éternel n'est pas au milieu de vous! afin que vous ne soyez pas mis en déroute devant vos ennemis;
43 For, the Amalekites and the Canaanites, are there before you, So shall ye fall by the sword, —For inasmuch as ye have turned back from following Yahweh, Therefore will Yahweh not be with you.
car les Amalécites et les Cananéens sont là devant vous, et vous périrez par l'épée parce que vous vous êtes ainsi détournés de l'Éternel, et que l'Éternel ne sera pas avec vous.
44 But they presumptuously ascended into the top of the mountain, —though, neither, the ark of the covenant of Yahweh nor Moses moved out of the midst of the camp.
Néanmoins ils eurent la témérité de monter au sommet de la montagne, mais l'Arche de l'alliance de l'Éternel et Moïse ne bougèrent du camp.
45 So ten the Amalekites and the Canaanites, that dwelt in that mountain, came down, —and smote them and routed them even unto Hormah.
Alors les Amalécites et les Cananéens qui occupaient cette montagne, firent une descente et les battirent, et les menèrent battant jusqu'à Horma.
