Nehemiah 6
1 And it came to pass, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah and to Geshem the Arabian and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and there was left therein no breach, —though, up to that time, the doors, had I not set up in the gates,
Lorsqu'on eut appris à Sanballat, à Tobija, à Guéshem l'Arabe et au reste de nos ennemis que j'avais construit la muraille et qu'il n'y avait plus de brèche, bien que je n'eusse pas encore posé les battants des portes,
2 that Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come! and let us meet together in the villages, in the valley of Ono, —But, they, were plotting to do me harm.
Sanballat et Guéshem m'envoyèrent dire: « Viens, rencontrons-nous dans les villages de la plaine d'Ono. Rencontrons-nous ensemble dans les villages de la plaine d'Ono. » Mais ils avaient l'intention de me faire du mal.
3 So I sent unto them messengers, saying, A great work, am, I, doing, and cannot come down, —wherefore should the work cease whilst I leave it, and come down unto you?
J'ai envoyé des messagers vers eux, en disant: « Je fais une grande œuvre, de sorte que je ne peux pas descendre. Pourquoi l'œuvre cesserait-elle alors que je la quitte pour descendre vers vous? »
4 Yet they sent unto me, according to this message, four times, —and I replied to them according to this answer.
Ils m'envoyèrent quatre fois de la sorte, et je leur répondis de la même manière.
5 Then Sanballat sent unto me, according to this message, a fifth time, by his young man, —with an open letter, in his hand:
Alors Sanballat m'envoya son serviteur de la même manière, la cinquième fois, avec une lettre ouverte à la main,
6 wherein was written—Among the nations, it is reported, and, Gashmu, saith it, that, thou and the Jews, are plotting to rebel, for which cause, thou art building the wall, —and, thou, art to become their king, according to these words.
dans laquelle était écrit: « On raconte parmi les nations, et Gashmu le dit, que toi et les Juifs avez l'intention de vous rebeller. C'est pour cela que vous construisez le mur. Tu serais leur roi, selon ces paroles.
7 Moreover also, prophets, hast thou set up to make proclamation concerning thee in Jerusalem, saying, He hath become king in Judah! Now, therefore, will it he reported to the king, according to these words. Now, therefore, come, and let us take counsel together.
Tu as aussi désigné des prophètes pour annoncer ta venue à Jérusalem, en disant: « Il y a un roi en Juda! ». Maintenant, on le rapportera au roi selon ces paroles. Viens donc maintenant, et tenons conseil ensemble. »
8 Then sent I unto him, saying, Nothing hath been done, according to these words, which thou art saying, —but, out of thine own heart, art thou feigning them.
Alors je lui envoyai dire: « Ce n'est pas ce que tu dis qui se fait, mais tu l'imagines de ton propre cœur. »
9 For, they all, were seeking to put us in fear, saying, Their hands will slacken from the work, and it will not be accomplished. Now, therefore, strengthen thou my hands!
Car tous auraient voulu nous effrayer, en disant: « Leurs mains seront affaiblies par l'œuvre, et elle ne se fera pas. » Mais maintenant, fortifie mes mains.
10 When, I, came into the house of Shemaiah, son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, he, being shut in, he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, in the midst of the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to slay thee, yea, by night, are they coming to slay thee.
Je me rendis à la maison de Shemahia, fils de Delaia, fils de Méhétabel, qui était enfermé chez lui, et il dit: « Réunissons-nous dans la maison de Dieu, à l'intérieur du temple, et fermons les portes du temple, car ils viendront te tuer. Oui, dans la nuit, ils viendront pour te tuer. »
11 Then said I, Should, such a man as I, flee? Who then, being such as I, would enter the temple to save his life? I will not enter.
J'ai dit: « Un homme comme moi doit-il fuir? Qui est là qui, étant tel que moi, irait dans le temple pour sauver sa vie? Je n'y entrerai pas. »
12 Then perceived I, that lo! it was, not God, who had sent him, —though, a prophecy, he had spoken concerning me, but, Tobiah and Sanballat, had hired him:
Je discernai, et voici, Dieu ne l'avait pas envoyé, mais il prononçait cette prophétie contre moi. Tobija et Sanballat l'avaient engagé.
13 to this end, hired, he was, to the end that I might be afraid and do so, and might sin, —and it might serve them for an evil report, to the end they might bring reproach upon me.
Ils l'avaient engagé pour que j'aie peur, que j'agisse ainsi et que je commette un péché, et pour qu'ils aient de quoi faire un mauvais rapport, afin de m'accabler de reproches.
14 Have remembrance, O my God, of Tobiah and of Sanballat, according to these their doings, —moreover also, of Noadiah the prophetess, and of the rest of the prophets, who would have put me in fear.
« Souviens-toi, mon Dieu, de Tobija et de Sanballat selon leurs œuvres, et aussi de la prophétesse Noadia et du reste des prophètes qui auraient voulu me faire peur. »
15 So the wall was finished, on the twenty-fifth of Elul, —in fifty-two days.
Et la muraille fut achevée le vingt-cinquième jour d'Eloul, en cinquante-deux jours.
16 And it came to pass, when all our enemies heard, and all the nations that were round about us saw, that they fell greatly in their own eyes, and took knowledge that, from God, had this work been wrought.
Lorsque tous nos ennemis l'apprirent, toutes les nations qui nous entouraient eurent peur et perdirent leur confiance, car elles comprirent que cette œuvre avait été faite par notre Dieu.
17 Moreover, in those days, were the nobles of Judah busy with their letters which were going unto Tobiah, —and those of Tobiah were coming unto them;
En ce temps-là, les nobles de Juda envoyèrent de nombreuses lettres à Tobija, et les lettres de Tobija leur parvenaient.
18 for, many in Judah, had taken an oath to him, because he was in marriage affinity with Shecaniah son of Arah, —and, Jehohanan his son, had taken the daughter of Meshullam, son of Berechiah.
Car il y en avait beaucoup en Juda qui lui juraient fidélité, parce qu'il était gendre de Shecania, fils d'Arach, et que son fils Jehohanan avait pris pour femme la fille de Meshullam, fils de Bérékia.
19 Moreover, his good deeds, were they telling before me, and, my affairs, were they carrying out to him, —letters, did Tobiah send to put me in fear.
Ils parlèrent aussi de ses bonnes actions devant moi, et lui rapportèrent mes paroles. Tobija envoya des lettres pour me faire peur.
