Luke 2
1 Now it came to pass, in those days, that there went forth a decree from Caesar Augustus, for all the inhabited earth to be enrolled:
En ce temps-là, un décret de César Auguste prévoyait l'inscription du monde entier.
2 this enrolment, first was made while Cyrenius was governor of Syria:
C'était la première inscription faite lorsque Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie.
3 and all were journeying to be enrolled, each one unto his own city.
Tous allèrent s'inscrire, chacun dans sa ville.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of a city Nazareth, into Judaea, into the city of David which is called Bethlehem; because he was of the house and family of David:
Joseph aussi monta de Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, en Judée, à la ville de David, appelée Bethléem, parce qu'il était de la maison et de la famille de David,
5 to enrol himself with Mary who was betrothed to him, she being with child.
pour s'inscrire avec Marie, promise à l'épouser, étant enceinte.
6 And it came to pass, while they were there, that the days were fulfilled for her to give birth;
Pendant qu'ils étaient là, le jour était venu pour elle d'accoucher.
7 and she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Elle mit au monde son fils premier-né. Elle l'enveloppa dans des bandes de tissu et le coucha dans une mangeoire, car il n'y avait pas de place pour eux dans l'auberge.
8 And there were, shepherds, in the same country, dwelling in the fields, and keeping the watches of the night over their flock.
Il y avait dans le même pays des bergers qui restaient dans les champs et qui veillaient de nuit sur leur troupeau.
9 And, a messenger of the Lord, stood over them, and, a glory of the Lord, shone round about them; and they feared, a great fear.
Et voici qu'un ange du Seigneur se tenait près d'eux, et la gloire du Seigneur resplendissait autour d'eux, et ils étaient terrifiés.
10 And the messenger said unto them—Be not afraid! For lo! I bring you good tidings of a great joy, the which shall be for all the people:
L'ange leur dit: « N'ayez pas peur, car voici, je vous annonce une bonne nouvelle, une grande joie, qui sera partagée par tout le peuple.
11 That there hath been born unto you, this day, a saviour, —Who is Christ the Lord—in the city of David!
Car il vous est né aujourd'hui, dans la ville de David, un Sauveur, qui est le Christ Seigneur.
12 And, this, to you is, a sign: Ye shall find a babe, wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger.
Voici le signe qui vous est donné: vous trouverez un bébé enveloppé de bandes de tissu, couché dans une mangeoire. »
13 And, suddenly, there came to be, with the messenger, the throng of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying—
Soudain, il y eut avec l'ange une multitude de l'armée céleste qui louait Dieu et disait,
14 Glory, in the highest, unto God! And, on earth, peace, among men of goodwill.
« Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux, sur la terre la paix, la bonne volonté envers les hommes ».
15 And it came to pass, when the messengers had departed from them into heaven, that, the shepherds, began to say one to another—Let us go through forthwith as far as to Bethlehem, and see this thing which hath come to pass, which the Lord hath made known to us.
Lorsque les anges s'éloignèrent d'eux dans le ciel, les bergers se dirent les uns aux autres: « Allons à Bethléem, et voyons ce qui est arrivé, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître. »
16 And they came, with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.
Ils arrivèrent en hâte et trouvèrent Marie et Joseph, et le bébé était couché dans la mangeoire.
17 Now, when they beheld, they made known concerning the thing which had been told them as to this child.
Dès qu'ils le virent, ils publièrent largement la parole qui leur avait été dite au sujet de cet enfant.
18 And, all who heard, marvelled concerning the things which had been told by the shepherds unto them;
Tous ceux qui l'entendirent furent étonnés des choses que leur avaient dites les bergers.
19 but, Mary, was closely observing, all, these things, putting them together in her heart.
Mais Marie gardait toutes ces paroles, les méditant dans son cœur.
20 And the shepherds returned, giving glory and singing praise unto God, over all things which they had heard and seen, according as it had been told unto them.
Les bergers s'en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu pour tout ce qu'ils avaient entendu et vu, selon ce qui leur avait été annoncé.
21 And, when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, then was his name called, Jesus, —which it was called by the messenger, before he was conceived in the womb.
Lorsque huit jours furent accomplis pour la circoncision de l'enfant, on lui donna le nom de Jésus, qui avait été donné par l'ange avant qu'il ne fût conçu dans le sein de sa mère.
22 And, when the days of their purification, according to the law of Moses, were fulfilled, they took him up into Jerusalem, to present [him] unto the Lord, —
Lorsque les jours de leur purification selon la loi de Moïse furent accomplis, ils le firent monter à Jérusalem pour le présenter à l'Éternel
23 according as it is written in the law of the Lord—Every male that is a firstborn, Holy unto the Lord, shall be called,
(selon ce qui est écrit dans la loi de l'Éternel: « Tout mâle qui ouvre les entrailles sera appelé saint à l'Éternel »),
24 and to give a sacrifice, according to that which is said in the law of the Lord—A pair of turtle-doves, or two young pigeons.
et pour offrir un sacrifice selon ce qui est dit dans la loi de l'Éternel: « Une paire de tourterelles ou deux jeunes pigeons. »
25 And lo! there was, a man, in Jerusalem, whose name, was Symeon; and, this man, was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and Holy Spirit was upon him;
Voici, il y avait à Jérusalem un homme dont le nom était Siméon. Cet homme était juste et pieux, il cherchait la consolation d'Israël, et le Saint-Esprit était sur lui.
26 and it had been intimated to him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.
Il lui avait été révélé par le Saint-Esprit qu'il ne devait pas voir la mort avant d'avoir vu le Christ du Seigneur.
27 And he came, in the Spirit, into the temple; and, when the parents brought in the child Jesus, that they might do according to that which was customary by the law concerning it,
Il entra par l'Esprit dans le temple. Lorsque les parents amenèrent l'enfant Jésus, pour qu'ils agissent à son égard selon la coutume de la loi,
28 even he, welcomed it into his arms, and blessed God, and said—
il le reçut dans ses bras, bénit Dieu et dit,
29 Now, dost thou dismiss thy servant, O Sovereign, according to thy declaration—in peace;
« Maintenant, tu libères ton serviteur, Maître, selon ta parole, dans la paix;
30 Because mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
car mes yeux ont vu ton salut,
31 Which thou hast prepared in face of all the peoples:
que tu as préparé devant la face de tous les peuples;
32 A light for the unveiling of nations, and the glory of thy people Israel.
une lumière pour la révélation aux nations, et la gloire de ton peuple Israël. »
33 And his father and mother were marvelling over the things which were being spoken concerning him.
Joseph et sa mère étaient dans l'étonnement des choses qui étaient dites de lui.
34 And Symeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother—Lo! this one, is being set for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign to be spoken against;
Siméon les bénit, et il dit à Marie, sa mère: « Voici, cet enfant est destiné à la chute et au relèvement de beaucoup en Israël, et à un signe qui sera annoncé.
35 And, thou! through thy very soul, shall pass a sword, that, reasonings, may be revealed, out of many hearts.
Oui, une épée transpercera ton âme, afin que les pensées de plusieurs cœurs soient dévoilées. »
36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher; —the same, advanced in many days; having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,
Il y avait une certaine Anne, prophétesse, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d'Aser (elle était d'un âge avancé, ayant vécu sept ans avec un mari depuis sa virginité,
37 and, she, had been a widow for as long as eighty-four years, —who left not the temple, with fastings and supplications, rendering divine service night and day; —
et elle était veuve depuis environ quatre-vingt-quatre ans), qui ne s'éloignait pas du temple, se prosternant nuit et jour par des jeûnes et des supplications.
38 and, in that very hour, coming near, she began to give thanks unto God, and to speak concerning him unto all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Elle monta à l'heure même, rendit grâces au Seigneur et parla de lui à tous ceux qui attendaient la rédemption à Jérusalem.
39 And, when they had finished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, into their own city, Nazareth.
Lorsqu'ils eurent accompli tout ce qui était conforme à la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, dans leur ville, Nazareth.
40 And, the child, went on growing, and waxing strong, becoming filled with wisdom; and, the favour of God, was upon it.
L'enfant grandissait et devenait fort en esprit, il était rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
41 And his parents used to journey yearly into Jerusalem, at the feast of the passover.
Ses parents se rendaient chaque année à Jérusalem pour la fête de la Pâque.
42 And, when he became twelve years, and they went up, according to the custom of the feast,
Lorsqu'il eut douze ans, ils montèrent à Jérusalem selon la coutume de la fête;
43 and completed the days, and then were returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, —and his parents noticed it not;
et lorsqu'ils eurent accompli les jours, comme ils s'en retournaient, l'enfant Jésus resta en arrière à Jérusalem. Joseph et sa mère ne le savaient pas,
44 but, supposing him to be in the company, went a day’s journey, and then began to seek for him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances,
mais, supposant qu'il était dans la compagnie, ils firent une journée de chemin; et ils le cherchèrent parmi leurs parents et leurs connaissances.
45 and, not finding him, returned unto Jerusalem, seeking him.
Ne l'ayant pas trouvé, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem pour le chercher.
46 And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting amidst the teachers, —both hearkening unto them, and questioning them.
Trois jours après, ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des maîtres, les écoutant et les interrogeant.
47 Now all who heard him were beside themselves, because of his understanding and his answers.
Tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient stupéfaits de son intelligence et de ses réponses.
48 And, when they behold him, they were astounded, and his mother said unto him—Child! why, hast thou dealt with us, thus? Lo! thy father and I, in anguish, were seeking thee.
Quand ils le virent, ils furent stupéfaits, et sa mère lui dit: « Mon fils, pourquoi nous as-tu traités de la sorte? Voici, ton père et moi, nous te cherchions avec impatience. »
49 And he said unto them—Why was it that ye were seeking me? Perceived ye not, that, in the courts of my Father, I must needs be?
Il leur dit: « Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous? Ne saviez-vous pas que je dois être dans la maison de mon Père? »
50 And, they, understood not the thing which he spake to them.
Ils ne comprirent pas la parole qu'il leur adressait.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was submitting himself unto them. And, his mother, was closely observing all these things in her heart.
Et il descendit avec eux et vint à Nazareth. Il leur était soumis, et sa mère gardait dans son cœur toutes ces paroles.
52 And, Jesus, went on advancing in wisdom, and in stature, and in favour with God and men.
Et Jésus croissait en sagesse et en stature, et en faveur auprès de Dieu et des hommes.
