< Luke 11 >
1 And it came to pass, when he was in a certain place praying, as he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him—Lord! teach us to pray, as, John also, taught his disciples.
et factum est cum esset in loco quodam orans ut cessavit dixit unus ex discipulis eius ad eum Domine doce nos orare sicut et Iohannes docuit discipulos suos
2 And he said unto them—Whensoever ye are praying, say—Father! Hallowed be thy name, Come may thy kingdom,
et ait illis cum oratis dicite Pater sanctificetur nomen tuum adveniat regnum tuum
3 Our needful bread, be giving us, day by day;
panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis cotidie
4 And forgive us our sins, for, even we ourselves, forgive every one indebted to us; And bring us not into temptation.
et dimitte nobis peccata nostra siquidem et ipsi dimittimus omni debenti nobis et ne nos inducas in temptationem
5 And he said unto them—Who from among you, shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him—Friend! supply me with three loaves,
et ait ad illos quis vestrum habebit amicum et ibit ad illum media nocte et dicit illi amice commoda mihi tres panes
6 forasmuch as, a friend of mine, hath come off a journey unto me, and I have not what I can set before him;
quoniam amicus meus venit de via ad me et non habeo quod ponam ante illum
7 and, he, from within, shall answer, and say—Be not disturbing me, —already, the door hath been fastened, and, my children, with me, are, in bed: I cannot rise and give thee?
et ille de intus respondens dicat noli mihi molestus esse iam ostium clausum est et pueri mei mecum sunt in cubili non possum surgere et dare tibi
8 I say unto you—Even though he will not give him, rising because of his being a friend of his, because, at least, of his importunity, he will rouse himself, and give him as many as he needeth.
dico vobis et si non dabit illi surgens eo quod amicus eius sit propter inprobitatem tamen eius surget et dabit illi quotquot habet necessarios
9 I, therefore, unto you, say—Be asking, and it shall be given to you, Be seeking, and ye shall find, —Be knocking, and it shall be opened unto you.
et ego vobis dico petite et dabitur vobis quaerite et invenietis pulsate et aperietur vobis
10 For, whosoever asketh, receiveth, and, he that seeketh, findeth, —and, to him that knocketh, shall it be opened.
omnis enim qui petit accipit et qui quaerit invenit et pulsanti aperietur
11 But which is the father, from among yourselves, whom the son will ask for, a fish, who, instead of a fish, will give him, a serpent?
quis autem ex vobis patrem petet panem numquid lapidem dabit illi aut piscem numquid pro pisce serpentem dabit illi
12 Or shall also ask, an egg, who will give him, a scorpion?
aut si petierit ovum numquid porriget illi scorpionem
13 If therefore, ye, being, evil, know how to be giving, good gifts, unto your children, how much rather, will, the heavenly Father, give Holy Spirit unto them that ask him!
si ergo vos cum sitis mali nostis bona data dare filiis vestris quanto magis Pater vester de caelo dabit spiritum bonum petentibus se
14 And he was casting out a demon that was dumb; and it came to pass, when the demon went out, the dumb began speaking. And the multitudes marvelled;
et erat eiciens daemonium et illud erat mutum et cum eiecisset daemonium locutus est mutus et admiratae sunt turbae
15 but, some from among them, said—In Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, is he casting out the demons;
quidam autem ex eis dixerunt in Beelzebub principe daemoniorum eicit daemonia
16 and, others, putting him to the test, a sign out of heaven, were seeking from him.
et alii temptantes signum de caelo quaerebant ab eo
17 But, he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them—Every kingdom, against itself divided, is laid waste, and, a house, against a house, [divided], falleth;
ipse autem ut vidit cogitationes eorum dixit eis omne regnum in se ipsum divisum desolatur et domus supra domum cadet
18 And, if, even Satan, against himself hath become divided, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye are saying that, in Beelzebul, am I casting out the demons.
si autem et Satanas in se ipsum divisus est quomodo stabit regnum ipsius quia dicitis in Beelzebub eicere me daemonia
19 But, if, I, in Beelzebul, am casting out the demons, In whom are, your sons, casting them out? Wherefore, they, shall be, your judges.
si autem ego in Beelzebub eicio daemonia filii vestri in quo eiciunt ideo ipsi iudices vestri erunt
20 But, if, with the finger of God, I, am casting out the demons, then doubtless unawares hath come upon you, the kingdom of God.
porro si in digito Dei eicio daemonia profecto praevenit in vos regnum Dei
21 Whensoever, the mighty one, armed, may be guarding his own dwelling, in peace, are his goods;
cum fortis armatus custodit atrium suum in pace sunt ea quae possidet
22 But, whensoever, a mightier than he, shall come upon and vanquish him, his panoply, he taketh away, wherein he was trusting, and, his spoils, he distributeth.
si autem fortior illo superveniens vicerit eum universa arma eius aufert in quibus confidebat et spolia eius distribuit
23 He that is not with me, is, against me; and, he that gathereth not with me, scattereth.
qui non est mecum adversum me est et qui non colligit mecum dispergit
24 Whensoever, the impure spirit, goeth out from the man, it passeth through waterless places, seeking rest; and, not finding it, [then, ] it saith, I will return unto my house, whence I came out; —
cum inmundus spiritus exierit de homine perambulat per loca inaquosa quaerens requiem et non inveniens dicit revertar in domum meam unde exivi
25 and, coming, findeth it, [empty, ] swept, and adorned.
et cum venerit invenit scopis mundatam
26 Then, goeth it, and taketh along with itself, other spirits, more wicked than itself—seven, and, entering in, fixeth its dwelling there; and, the last state of that man, becometh, worse than the first.
et tunc vadit et adsumit septem alios spiritus nequiores se et ingressi habitant ibi et sunt novissima hominis illius peiora prioribus
27 Now it came to pass, while he was saying these things, that a certain woman out of the multitude, lifting up her voice, said unto him—Happy the womb that bare thee! And the breasts which thou didst suck!
factum est autem cum haec diceret extollens vocem quaedam mulier de turba dixit illi beatus venter qui te portavit et ubera quae suxisti
28 But, he, said—Yea rather!—Happy they who hear the word of God, and observe it!
at ille dixit quippini beati qui audiunt verbum Dei et custodiunt
29 And, as the multitudes were thronging together, he began to be saying—This generation, is, a wicked generation: A sign, it is seeking, and, a sign, shall not be given it, save the sign of Jonah.
turbis autem concurrentibus coepit dicere generatio haec generatio nequam est signum quaerit et signum non dabitur illi nisi signum Ionae
30 For, according as, Jonah, became, unto the Ninevites, a sign, so, shall be, the Son of Man also, unto this generation.
nam sicut Ionas fuit signum Ninevitis ita erit et Filius hominis generationi isti
31 The queen of the south, will rise up, in the judgment, with the men of this generation, and will condemn them; because she came out of the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, —and lo! something more than Solomon, here.
regina austri surget in iudicio cum viris generationis huius et condemnabit illos quia venit a finibus terrae audire sapientiam Salomonis et ecce plus Salomone hic
32 Men of Nineveh, will rise up, in the judgment, with this generation, and will condemn it; because they repented into the proclamation of Jonah, —and lo! something more than Jonah, here.
viri ninevitae surgent in iudicio cum generatione hac et condemnabunt illam quia paenitentiam egerunt ad praedicationem Ionae et ecce plus Iona hic
33 No one, having lighted, a lamp, into a covered place, a putteth it, nor, under the measure; but upon the lampstand, that they who enter may see, the light.
nemo lucernam accendit et in abscondito ponit neque sub modio sed supra candelabrum ut qui ingrediuntur lumen videant
34 The lamp of thy body, is thine eye: Whensoever, thine eye, may be, single, even the whole of thy body, is, lighted up; but, whensoever it may be, useless, even thy body, is darkened.
lucerna corporis tui est oculus tuus si oculus tuus fuerit simplex totum corpus tuum lucidum erit si autem nequam fuerit etiam corpus tuum tenebrosum erit
35 Be looking to it, therefore, lest, the light that is in thee, be, darkness.
vide ergo ne lumen quod in te est tenebrae sint
36 If, therefore, thy whole body, is lighted up, not having any part darkened, the whole, shall be lighted up, as whensoever, the lamp, with its radiance, may be giving thee light.
si ergo corpus tuum totum lucidum fuerit non habens aliquam partem tenebrarum erit lucidum totum et sicut lucerna fulgoris inluminabit te
37 And, when he had spoken, a Pharisee was requesting him that he would dine with him; and, entering, he reclined.
et cum loqueretur rogavit illum quidam Pharisaeus ut pranderet apud se et ingressus recubuit
38 And, the Pharisee, beholding, marvelled that he was not, first, immersed, before the dinner.
Pharisaeus autem coepit intra se reputans dicere quare non baptizatus esset ante prandium
39 And the Lord said unto him: Now, ye, the Pharisees, the outside of the cup and of the tray, do make pure; but, your inward part, is full of plunder and wickedness.
et ait Dominus ad illum nunc vos Pharisaei quod de foris est calicis et catini mundatis quod autem intus est vestrum plenum est rapina et iniquitate
40 Simple ones! Did not, he who made the outside, the inside also, make?
stulti nonne qui fecit quod de foris est etiam id quod de intus est fecit
41 Notwithstanding, as to the things within, give alms, and lo! everything, is, pure unto you.
verumtamen quod superest date elemosynam et ecce omnia munda sunt vobis
42 But alas for you, the Pharisees! because ye tithe the mint, and the rue, and every garden herb, and pass by justice, and the love of God. But, these things, it was binding to do, and, those, not to pass by.
sed vae vobis Pharisaeis quia decimatis mentam et rutam et omne holus et praeteritis iudicium et caritatem Dei haec autem oportuit facere et illa non omittere
43 Alas for you, the Pharisees! because ye love the first seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the market-places!
vae vobis Pharisaeis quia diligitis primas cathedras in synagogis et salutationes in foro
44 Alas for you! because ye are as the secret tombs: even the men that are walking above them, know it not.
vae vobis quia estis ut monumenta quae non parent et homines ambulantes supra nesciunt
45 And, making answer, one of the Lawyers saith unto him, Teacher! these things, saying, us also, dost thou insult!
respondens autem quidam ex legis peritis ait illi magister haec dicens etiam nobis contumeliam facis
46 And, he, said—And, for you, the lawyers, alas! because ye lade men with burdens hard to be borne, and, yourselves, with one of your fingers, touch not the burdens.
at ille ait et vobis legis peritis vae quia oneratis homines oneribus quae portari non possunt et ipsi uno digito vestro non tangitis sarcinas
47 Alas for you! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers slew them!
vae vobis quia aedificatis monumenta prophetarum patres autem vestri occiderunt illos
48 Hence, witnesses, are ye, and find consenting pleasure in the works of your fathers: because, they, indeed, slew them, and, ye, are building, [their tombs].
profecto testificamini quod consentitis operibus patrum vestrorum quoniam quidem ipsi eos occiderunt vos autem aedificatis eorum sepulchra
49 For this cause, the Wisdom of God hath said—I will send forth, unto them, prophets and apostles, —and, some from among them, will they slay, and, [some] persecute:
propterea et sapientia Dei dixit mittam ad illos prophetas et apostolos et ex illis occident et persequentur
50 That the blood of all the prophets which hath been shed from the foundation of the world, may be sought out, from this generation, —
ut inquiratur sanguis omnium prophetarum qui effusus est a constitutione mundi a generatione ista
51 From the blood of Abel, unto the blood of Zachariah who was destroyed betwixt the altar and the house; Yea! I say unto you—It shall be sought out from this generation.
a sanguine Abel usque ad sanguinem Zacchariae qui periit inter altare et aedem ita dico vobis requiretur ab hac generatione
52 Alas for you, the lawyers! because ye took away the key of knowledge: yourselves, entered not, and, them who were entering, ye hindered.
vae vobis legis peritis quia tulistis clavem scientiae ipsi non introistis et eos qui introibant prohibuistis
53 And, when, from thence, he came out, the Scribes and the Pharisees began, with vehemence, to be hemming him in, and trying to make him speak off-hand concerning many things, —
cum haec ad illos diceret coeperunt Pharisaei et legis periti graviter insistere et os eius opprimere de multis
54 lying in wait for him, to catch something out of his mouth.
insidiantes et quaerentes capere aliquid ex ore eius ut accusarent eum
