Judges 7
1 Then Jerubbaal, the same, is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and encamped by the fountain of Harod, —and, the camp of Midian, was on the north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the vale.
Ainsi Jérobaal, c’est-à-dire, Gédéon, se levant de nuit, et tout le peuple avec lui, vint à la fontaine qui est appelée Harad. Or, le camp de Madian était dans la vallée vers le côté septentrional de la colline fort élevée.
2 And Yahweh said unto Gideon, Too many, are the people that are with thee, for me to deliver the Midianites into their hand, —lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand, hath saved me.
Et le Seigneur dit à Gédéon: Il y a avec toi un peuple nombreux; mais Madian ne sera point livré en ses mains; de peur qu’Israël ne se glorifie contre moi, et ne dise: C’est par mes propres forces que j’ai été délivré.
3 Now, therefore, proclaim, I pray thee, in the ears of the people, saying, Whoso feareth and trembleth—let him turn and go back from Mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty-two thousand, and, ten thousand, remained.
Parle au peuple, et, tous l’entendant, publie: Que celui qui est craintif et timide s’en retourne. Et vingt-deux mille hommes du peuple se retirèrent de la montagne de Galaad et s’en retournèrent; et seulement dix mille restèrent.
4 Then said Yahweh unto Gideon—Yet, are the people too many, take them down unto the waters, that I may prove them for thee, there, —and it shall be, that, he of whom I say unto thee, This one, shall go with thee, the same, shall go with thee, and, every one of whom I say unto thee, This one, shall not go with thee, the same, shall not go.
Alors le Seigneur dit à Gédéon: Le peuple est encore nombreux; mène-les près de l’eau, et là, je les éprouverai: et celui dont je te dirai, qu’il aille avec toi, que celui-là parte; que celui à qui je défendrai d’aller, s’en retourne.
5 So he took down the people unto the waters, —and Yahweh said unto Gideon—Every one that lappeth with his tongue of the water, as a dog lappeth, thou shalt set him by himself, likewise, every one that boweth down upon his knees, to drink.
Et lorsque le peuple fut descendu près de l’eau, le Seigneur dit à Gédéon: Ceux qui de la langue laperont l’eau comme les chiens ont coutume de laper, tu les mettras à part; mais ceux qui, les genoux courbés, boiront, seront d’un autre côté.
6 And so it was, that, the number of them that lapped with their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men, —but, all the rest of the people, bowed down on their knees, to drink water.
Or, le nombre de ceux qui lapèrent l’eau, leur main la portant à leur bouche, fut de trois cents hommes; mais tout le reste de la multitude avait bu, le genou fléchi.
7 Then said Yahweh unto Gideon—By the three hundred men that lapped, will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let, all [the rest of] the people, go every man to his own place.
Et le Seigneur dit à Gédéon: C’est par les trois cents hommes qui ont lapé l’eau que je vous délivrerai, et que je livrerai en votre main Madian; mais que tout le reste de la multitude s’en retourne dans ses foyers.
8 So the people took provisions in their hand, and their horns, but, every man of Israel besides, sent he away every man to his home, whereas, the three hundred men, he retained. Now, the camp of Midian, was beneath him in the vale.
C’est pourquoi, ayant pris des vivres et des trompettes en proportion du nombre de ces hommes, il ordonna au reste de la multitude de se retirer dans ses tabernacles; et lui-même avec les trois cents hommes se réserva pour le combat. Or le camp de Madian était en bas dans la vallée.
9 And it came to pass, on that night, that Yahweh said unto him, Arise! go down against the camp, —for I have delivered it into thy hand.
La même nuit, le Seigneur lui dit: Lève-toi, et descends dans le camp, parce que je les ai livrés en ta main;
10 Or, if, thou, art afraid to go down, go down—thou and Purah thy young man, unto the camp;
Mais si tu crains d’aller seul, que Phara, ton serviteur, descende avec toi.
11 so shalt thou hear what they shall say, —and, afterward, shall thy hands grow strong, and thou shalt go down against the camp. Then went he down, he and Purah his young man, unto the outmost part of the armed men that were in the camp.
Et lorsque tu auras entendu ce qu’ils disent, tes mains se fortifieront, et tu descendras plus rassuré dans le camp des ennemis. Il descendit donc, lui et Phara, son serviteur, dans la partie du camp où étaient les postes des hommes armés.
12 Now, the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the sons of the east, were lying along in the vale, like locusts for multitude, —their camels also, were without number, as the sand that is by the sea side, for multitude.
Or, Madian et Amalec et tous les peuples orientaux étaient couchés épars dans la vallée, comme une multitude de sauterelles: les chameaux aussi étaient innombrables comme le sable qui est sur le rivage de la mer.
13 And Gideon came in, and lo! a man relating to his neighbour a dream, —and he said—Lo! a dream, have I dreamt, and lo! a round cake of barley bread tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came as far as the tent—and smote it that it fell, and turned it upside down, and the tent lay along.
Et lorsque Gédéon se fut avancé, quelqu’un racontait ainsi à son voisin un songe qu’il avait vu: J’ai vu un songe; or, je voyais comme un pain d’orge cuit sous la cendre rouler, et descendre dans le camp de Madian, et lorsqu’il est parvenu à la tente, il l’a frappée, l’a renversée et jetée entièrement à terre.
14 Then responded his neighbour and said: —Nothing else, is this, than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, a man of Israel, —God hath delivered into his hand, both Midian and all the host.
Celui à qui il parlait répondit: Cela n’est pas autre chose que le glaive de Gédéon, fils de Joas, homme d’Israël; car le Seigneur a livré en ses mains Madian et tout son camp.
15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the story of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he bowed himself down, —and returned unto the camp of Israel, and said—Arise! for Yahweh hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
Et lorsque Gédéon eut entendu le songe et son interprétation, il adora; et il retourna au camp d’Israël, et dit: Levez-vous, car le Seigneur a livré en nos mains le camp de Madian.
16 And he divided the three hundred men, into three companies, —and put horns into the hands of them all, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers.
Alors il divisa les trois cents hommes en trois parties, et il mit des trompettes en leurs mains, et des cruches vides et des lampes au milieu des cruches.
17 Then he said unto them, On me, shall ye look, and, in like manner, shall ye do, —and lo! when I am coming unto the outermost part of the camp, then shall it be, that, as I do, so, shall ye do.
Et il leur dit: Ce que vous me verrez faire, faites-le: j’entrerai dans une partie du camp, et ce que je ferai, imitez-le.
18 When I shall blow with the horn, I and all who are with me, then shall, ye also, round about all the camp, blow with your horns, and shall say, For Yahweh and for Gideon!
Quand la trompette sonnera dans ma main, vous aussi sonnez autour du camp, et criez ensemble: Au Seigneur et à Gédéon!
19 So Gideon came, and the hundred men that were with him, unto the outermost part of the camp, at the beginning of the middle watch, they had but, newly set, the watchers, —and they blew with the horns, and brake in pieces the pitchers, that were in their hand.
Gédéon entra donc et les trois cents hommes qui étaient avec lui, dans une partie du camp, les veilles du milieu de la nuit commençant, puis, les gardes étant réveillés, ils commencèrent à sonner des trompettes, et à heurter leurs cruches l’une contre l’autre.
20 Yea the three companies blew with the horns, and shivered the pitchers, and caught hold—with their left hands—of the torches, while, in their right hands, were the horns, to blow with, —and they cried, A sword for Yahweh, and for Gideon!
Et ayant sonné autour du camp en trois endroits, et ayant brisé les cruches, ils tinrent les lampes de la main gauche, sonnant des trompettes de la droite, et ils crièrent: Le glaive du Seigneur et de Gédéon!
21 And they stood still, every man in his place, round about the camp, —and all the host ran and shouted, and fled.
Se tenant chacun à son poste autour du camp des ennemis. C’est pourquoi tout le camp fut troublé; et vociférant et hurlant ils s’enfuirent.
22 When the three hundred blew the horns, Yahweh set the sword of every man, against his neighbour, and against all the host, —and the host fled, as far as the Place of Acacias, towards Zererath, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath.
Et néanmoins les trois cents hommes continuaient à sonner des trompettes. Alors le Seigneur envoya le glaive dans tout le camp, et ils se tuaient les uns les autres.
23 And the men of Israel were called together, out of Naphtali and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, —and pursued Midian.
Fuyant jusqu’à Bethsetta et au bord d’Abelméhula en Tebbath. Mais les hommes d’Israël des tribus de Nephthali, d’Aser et de toute la tribu de Manassé, criant ensemble, poursuivaient Madian.
24 And, messengers, did Gideon send through all the hill country of Ephraim, saying—Go down to meet Midian, and capture, before them, the waters, as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and captured the waters, as far as Beth-barah, and the Jordan.
Et Gédéon envoya des messagers sur toute la montagne d’Ephraïm, disant: Descendez à la rencontre de Madian, et emparez-vous des eaux jusqu’à Bethbéra et jusqu’au Jourdain. Et tout Ephraïm cria et s’empara des eaux et du Jourdain jusqu’à Bethbéra.
25 And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, and slew Oreb at Oreb’s Rock, and, Zeeb, they slew at Zeeb’s Winepress, and pursued Midian, —and, the heads of Oreb and Zeeb, brought they in unto Gideon at the ford of the Jordan.
Et ayant pris deux hommes de Madian, Oreb et Zeb, ils tuèrent Oreb, au rocher d’Oreb, mais Zeb au pressoir de Zeb. Et ils poursuivirent Madian, portant les têtes d’Oreb et de Zeb à Gédéon au-delà des courants du Jourdain.
