Judges 20
1 Then went forth all the sons of Israel, and the assembly came together as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba with the land of Gilead, —unto Yahweh at Mizpah.
Et de Dan à Beerséba et au pays de Galaad tous les enfants d'Israël se mirent en mouvement comme un seul homme, et l'Assemblée se réunit devant l'Éternel à Mitspa.
2 And the chiefs of all the people—all the tribes of Israel—presented themselves in the convocation of the people of God, —four hundred thousand footmen, that drew the sword.
Et dans l'Assemblée du peuple de Dieu parurent les chefs de tout le peuple, toutes les Tribus d'Israël, quatre cent mille hommes de pied, tirant l'épée.
3 And the sons of Benjamin heard that the sons of Israel had gone up to Mizpah. Then said the sons of Israel, Tell [us], In what manner was brought to pass this vileness?
Et les enfants de Benjamin apprirent que les enfants d'Israël étaient montés à Mitspa. Et les enfants d'Israël dirent: Exposez la manière en laquelle ce forfait a été commis.
4 And the Levite, husband of the woman that was cut in pieces, responded and said, —Into Gibeah that pertaineth to Benjamin, I entered, I and my concubine, to tarry the night.
Alors le Lévite, mari de la femme qu'on avait tuée, prit la parole et dit: J'entrai à Gibea en Benjamin, moi et ma concubine, pour y passer la nuit.
5 And the owners of Gibeah rose up against me, and beset the house, for my sake, by night, —me, they thought to slay, and, my concubine, they so humbled, that she died.
Et les citoyens de Gibea firent une émeute contre moi, et à cause de moi pendant la nuit ils cernèrent la maison. Ils pensaient à me tuer, et ils ont si indignement abusé de ma concubine qu'elle en est morte.
6 So I laid hold on my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel, —because they had wrought lewdness and impiety, in Israel.
Alors j'ai pris ma concubine et je l'ai coupée en pièces dont j'ai fait des envois dans toutes les terres de l'héritage d'Israël, parce qu'on a commis un forfait et une action infâme en Israël.
7 Lo! ye all, are sons of Israel, —give your word and counsel, here.
Voilà que vous êtes tous ici, enfants d'Israël; ici même délibérez et décidez.
8 Then arose all the people, as one man, saying, —No man of us will go to his tent, and no man of us will turn aside to his house.
Alors tout le peuple se leva comme un seul homme et dit: Tous tant que nous sommes, nous ne voulons ni retourner à nos tentes ni rentrer dans nos maisons.
9 Now, therefore, this is the thing, that we will do to Gibeah, —[Go] against it by lot;
Et maintenant voici comment nous traiterons Gibea: le sort désignera ceux de nous qui marcheront contre elle.
10 and we will take ten men of a hundred, of all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand of ten thousand, to fetch provisions for the people, —that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the impiety that it hath wrought in Israel.
Et nous lèverons dix hommes sur cent dans toutes les Tribus d'Israël et cent sur mille et mille sur dix mille, pour procurer des vivres à la troupe afin que s'étant mise en marche, elle traite Gibea de Benjamin en raison exacte de l'action infâme commise en Israël.
11 So all the men of Israel were gathered together against the city, as one man knit together.
Tous les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent donc près de la ville unis comme un seul homme.
12 And the tribes of Israel sent men throughout all the divisions of Benjamin, saying, —What is this vile thing that hath been brought to pass, among you?
Et les Tribus d'Israël députèrent à toutes les familles de Benjamin, pour dire: Qu'est-ce que ce crime qui s'est commis chez vous?
13 Now, therefore, deliver up the men—the sons of the Abandoned One—who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and vileness be consumed out of Israel. But [the sons of] Benjamin would not hearken unto the voice of their brethren, the sons of Israel.
Et maintenant livrez-nous les hommes dépravés de Gibea afin que nous les fassions mourir et que nous exterminions le crime du sein d'Israël. Mais les Benjaminites ne voulurent pas écouter la voix de leurs frères, les enfants d'Israël.
14 Then did the sons of Benjamin gather themselves together out of the cities, unto Gibeah, —to go forth to battle against the sons of Israel.
Et les enfants de Benjamin vinrent de leurs villes se réunir à Gibea pour marcher au combat contre les enfants d'Israël.
15 And the sons of Benjamin were numbered on that day, out of the cities, twenty-six thousand men, that drew the sword, —besides, of the inhabitants of Gibeah, were numbered seven hundred chosen men.
Et l'on fit ce jour-là passer à la revue vingt-six mille Benjaminites tirant l'épée sortis des villes, non compris les habitants de Gibea qui passèrent à la revue au nombre de sept cents hommes d'élite.
16 Out of all this people, were seven hundred chosen men, left-handed, —any one of whom could sling with a stone to a hair’s-breadth, and not miss.
Sur toute cette milice il y avait sept cents hommes d'élite inhabiles de la main droite; tous ils lançaient une pierre avec la fronde et ne manquaient pas le but d'un cheveu.
17 And, the men of Israel, were numbered, apart from Benjamin, four hundred thousand men, that drew the sword, —every one of these being a man of war.
Et les Israélites qui passèrent à la revue, étaient, sans Benjamin, quatre cent mille hommes tirant l'épée, tous gens de guerre.
18 And they arose, and went up to Bethel, and asked of God, and the sons of Israel said, Who shall go up for us first, to fight against the sons of Benjamin? And Yahweh said—Judah, first.
Et s'étant mis en marche ils montèrent à Béthel et consultèrent Dieu. Et les enfants d'Israël demandèrent: Lequel de nous marchera le premier au combat contre les enfants de Benjamin? Et l'Éternel dit: Juda marchera le premier.
19 And the sons of Israel arose in the morning, —and encamped against Gibeah.
Là-dessus les enfants d'Israël se mirent en campagne le matin, et ils vinrent camper devant Gibea.
20 And the men of Israel went forth, to fight against Benjamin, —so the men of Israel set themselves in array against them, to fight against Gibeah.
Et les hommes d'Israël sortirent pour livrer bataille aux Benjaminites, et ils se rangèrent en bataille contre eux devant Gibea.
21 Then came forth the sons of Benjamin out of Gibeah, —and laid low of Israel, on that day, twenty-two thousand men, to the ground.
Alors les Benjaminites firent une sortie de Gibea, et en ce jour tuèrent aux Israélites vingt-deux mille hommes qui jonchèrent le sol.
22 And the people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves, —and again set themselves in array for battle in the place where they had set themselves in array on the first day.
Mais l'armée, les hommes d'Israël, prirent courage et reformèrent leur ligne dans le lieu même où le premier jour ils l'avaient formée.
23 Now the sons of Israel had gone up, and wept before Yahweh, until the evening, and asked of Yahweh, saying, Shall I again draw near to battle against the sons of Benjamin, my brother? And Yahweh said, Go up against him.
Et les enfants d'Israël montèrent [à Béthel] et pleurèrent devant l'Éternel jusqu'au soir, et ils consultèrent l'Éternel en disant: Dois-je engager de nouveau le combat avec les enfants de Benjamin, mon frère? Et l'Éternel dit: Attaque-les!
24 So the sons of Israel came near against the sons of Benjamin, on the second day.
Les enfants d'Israël s'avancèrent donc contre les enfants de Benjamin, le deuxième jour.
25 And Benjamin came forth to meet them out of Gibeah, on the second day, and laid low, of the sons of Israel, yet eighteen thousand men, to the ground, —all these, drew the sword.
Mais Benjamin sortit de Gibea à leur rencontre, le deuxième jour, et fit encore mordre la poussière à dix-huit mille hommes des enfants d'Israël, tous tirant l'épée.
26 Then went up all the sons of Israel, and all the people, and came to Bethel, and wept, and tarried there before Yahweh, and fasted on that day, until the evening, —and caused to go up ascending-sacrifices and peace-offerings, before Yahweh.
Alors tous les enfants d'Israël et tout le peuple montèrent et vinrent à Béthel, et pleurant ils s'assirent là devant l'Éternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là jusqu'au soir et offrirent à l'Éternel des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques.
27 And the sons of Israel asked of Yahweh, —there, being the ark of the covenant of God, in those days;
Et les enfants d'Israël consultèrent l'Éternel (or à cette époque l'Arche de l'Alliance de Dieu était là;
28 and Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, was standing before it in those days, saying: Shall I yet again go forth to battle, against the sons of Benjamin, my brother, or shall I forbear? And Yahweh said—Go up, for, to-morrow, will I deliver him into thy hand.
et Phinées, fils d'Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, était en charge devant Lui à cette époque) en disant: Dois-je derechef marcher au combat contre les enfants de Benjamin, mon frère, ou bien me désisterai-je? Et l'Éternel dit: Marchez, car demain je les livrerai entre vos mains.
29 And Israel set liers in wait against Gibeah, round about.
Alors Israël dressa une embuscade contre Gibea de tous les côtés.
30 So the sons of Israel went up against the sons of Benjamin, on the third day, —and set themselves in array against Gibeah, as time after time.
Et les enfants d'Israël marchèrent contre ceux de Benjamin le troisième jour, et ils prirent position devant Gibea cette fois comme les autres fois.
31 And the sons of Benjamin came forth against the people, they were drawn away from the city, —and began to smite of the people, slaying as time after time, in the highways, whereof, one, goeth up to Bethel, and, the other, to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men in Israel.
Ensuite les enfants de Benjamin firent une sortie contre cette armée, et ils se laissèrent entraîner loin de la ville, et cette fois comme les autres fois ils se mirent à frapper et à tuer dans les rangs du peuple, sur les routes dont l'une mène à Béthel et l'autre à Gibea par la campagne, environ trente hommes d'Israël.
32 Then said the sons of Benjamin, They are, being smitten, before us, as at the first. But the sons of Israel had said—Let us flee, and draw them away from the city, into the highways.
Et les enfants de Benjamin disaient: Ils sont battus par nous, comme au début. Mais les enfants d'Israël disaient: Fuyons, afin de les attirer loin de la ville sur ces routes.
33 And, all the men of Israel, rose up out of their place, and set themselves in array in Baal-tamar, —and, the liers in wait of Israel, began to break forth out of their place, out of the forest of Gibeah.
Et tous les hommes d'Israël quittant leur position formèrent leur ligne à Baal-Thamar, et les Israélites embusqués s'élancèrent hors de leur retraite, de la steppe de Gibea.
34 And there came over against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men, out of all Israel, and the battle was severe, —they, not knowing that disaster was overtaking them.
Et de devant Gibea s'avancèrent dix mille hommes d'élite de tout Israël, et l'action devint sérieuse. Or [les Benjaminites] ne se doutaient pas du désastre qu'ils allaient essuyer.
35 Thus Yahweh smote Benjamin before Israel, and the sons of Israel destroyed in Benjamin, that day, twenty-five thousand and one hundred men, —all these, drew the sword.
Et l'Éternel battit Benjamin devant Israël; et les enfants d'Israël, dans cette journée, tuèrent à Benjamin vingt-cinq mille et cent hommes tous tirant l'épée.
36 So the sons of Benjamin saw that they were smitten, —and that the men of Israel had given place to Benjamin, because they trusted to the liers in wait, whom they had set near Gibeah.
Les enfants de Benjamin voyaient déjà en déroute les enfants d'Israël qui cédaient le terrain aux Benjaminites, comptant sur l'embuscade qu'ils avaient dressée contre Gibea.
37 And, the liers in wait, hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah, —and the liers in wait marched forward, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
Mais ces gens embusqués par un prompt mouvement assaillirent Gibea et l'occupèrent et frappèrent toute la ville avec le tranchant de l'épée.
38 Now, the appointed sign, between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, had been, —to cause a great cloud of smoke to ascend out of the city.
Or les hommes d'Israël étaient convenus avec les gens embusqués de ceci: « Faites en sorte qu'il s'élève de la ville un gros nuage de fumée. »
39 So, when the men of Israel turned in the battle, —and, the Benjamites, began to smite and slay of the sons of Israel, about thirty men, for they said, Yea! they are, smitten, before us, as in the first battle,
C'est alors que dans la bataille les Israélites firent leur conversion, Benjamin commençant à tuer environ trente hommes à Israël et disant: Nul doute! ils sont battus par nous comme dans la première bataille.
40 then, the cloud, began to ascend out of the city, a pillar of smoke, —and the Benjamites looked behind them, and lo! the whole city flamed up towards the heavens.
Cependant de la ville commençait à s'élever le nuage, une colonne de fumée; et les Benjaminites regardèrent derrière eux, et voilà que toute la ville en feu s'élevait vers le ciel.
41 And, when, the men of Israel, turned, then were the men of Benjamin dismayed, —for they saw that disaster had overtaken them.
Et les Israélites ayant fait leur conversion, les hommes de Benjamin furent éperdus, car ils se voyaient sous le coup du désastre.
42 And, when they turned before the men of Israel unto the way of the desert, the battle, over took them, —while, as for them that came out of the cities, they began to destroy them in their midst: —
Et tournant le dos aux Israélites ils prirent le chemin du désert; mais les combattants s'acharnèrent sur leurs traces, et massacrant ceux des villes dans les villes,
43 they hemmed in the Benjamites, they pursued them, with ease, trode they them down, —as far as over against Gibeah, towards sunrise.
cernant et poursuivant Benjamin, l'écrasant quand il s'arrêtait, et cela jusque vis-à-vis de Gibea du côté du soleil levant.
44 So there fell of Benjamin, eighteen thousand men, —all these being men of valour.
Et ainsi périrent dix-huit mille hommes de Benjamin, tous braves guerriers.
45 And, when they turned and fled towards the desert unto the cliff Rimmon, then gleaned they of them, in the highways, five thousand men, —and they followed hard after them as far as Gidom, and smote of them, two thousand men.
Et ayant tourné le dos, ils s'enfuirent dans le désert au rocher de Rimmon; mais les Israélites firent sur les routes une glanure de cinq mille hommes, et les poursuivirent jusqu'à Gédéon, et ils en tuèrent deux mille.
46 So then it came to pass that, all the fallen of Benjamin, were twenty-five thousand men, that drew the sword, on that day, —all these being men of valour.
Et la totalité des Benjaminites tués dans cette journée fut de vingt-cinq mille hommes tirant l'épée et tous braves guerriers.
47 But there turned and fled, towards the desert, unto the cliff Rimmon, six hundred men, —who abode in the cliff Rimmon, four months.
Et il y eut six cents hommes qui ayant tourné le dos s'enfuirent dans le désert au rocher de Rimmon et ils y demeurèrent quatre mois.
48 Thus, the men of Israel, turned against the sons of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, beginning with the city, each and every one down to the beast, even to every one that was met with, —moreover, all the cities they came to, they set on fire.
Et les Israélites revinrent aux Benjaminites [restants], et ils les frappèrent avec le tranchant de l'épée depuis les hommes des villes jusqu'au bétail et à tout ce qui se trouva, ils incendièrent aussi toutes les villes qu'ils rencontrèrent.
