Joshua 9
1 And it came to pass, when they heard, —namely, all the kings who were over the Jordan, in the hill country and in the lowland, and in all the coast of the great sea, over against the Lebanon, —the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; —
Lorsque tous les rois qui étaient de l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans la montagne et dans la plaine, et sur tout le rivage de la grande mer devant le Liban, le Héthien, l'Amoréen, le Cananéen, le Phérézien, le Hévien et le Jébusien, en eurent connaissance
2 then gathered they themselves together as one man, to fight with Joshua, and with Israel, —with one accord.
ils se rassemblèrent pour combattre Josué et Israël, d'un commun accord.
3 Now, the inhabitants of Gibeon, heard that which Joshua had done unto Jericho and unto Ai;
Mais lorsque les habitants de Gabaon apprirent ce que Josué avait fait à Jéricho et à Aï,
4 they, however, acted craftily, and went and started, —and took old sacks for their asses, and leathern wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
ils eurent aussi recours à une ruse, ils allèrent se faire passer pour des ambassadeurs, ils prirent de vieux sacs sur leurs ânes, de vieilles peaux de vin déchirées et ficelées,
5 and sandals, old and patched, upon their feet, and worn-out mantles upon them, —and, all the bread of their provision, was dry and broken.
ils portèrent à leurs pieds de vieilles sandales rapiécées et de vieux vêtements. Tout le pain de leur réserve de nourriture était sec et moisi.
6 So they took their journey unto Joshua, unto the camp, at Gilgal, —and said unto him, and unto the men of Israel, From a far country, are we come, Now, therefore, solemnise with us a covenant.
Ils allèrent trouver Josué au camp de Gilgal et lui dirent, ainsi qu'aux hommes d'Israël: « Nous venons d'un pays lointain. Fais donc maintenant une alliance avec nous. »
7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, —Peradventure, in our midst, ye are dwelling, how then can we solemnise with you a covenant?
Les hommes d'Israël dirent aux Hivvites: « Et si vous viviez parmi nous? Comment pourrions-nous faire une alliance avec vous? »
8 And they said unto Joshua: Thy servants, we are. And Joshua said unto them: Who, are ye? And, from whence, come ye?
Ils dirent à Josué: « Nous sommes tes serviteurs. » Josué leur dit: « Qui êtes-vous? D'où venez-vous? »
9 And they said unto him—From a very far country, have thy servants come, because of the name of Yahweh thy God, —because we had heard his fame, and all that he had done in Egypt;
Ils lui dirent: « Tes serviteurs sont venus d'un pays très lointain à cause du nom de Yahvé ton Dieu, car nous avons entendu parler de sa renommée, de tout ce qu'il a fait en Égypte,
10 and all that he had done unto the two kings of the Amorites who were over the Jordan, —unto Sihon, king of Heshbon, and unto Og, king of Bashan, who was in Ashtaroth.
et de tout ce qu'il a fait aux deux rois des Amoréens qui étaient au-delà du Jourdain, à Sihon, roi de Heshbon, et à Og, roi de Basan, qui était à Ashtaroth.
11 So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land spake unto us, saying—Take ye, in your hand, provision for the journey, and go your way to meet them, —then shall ye say unto them, Your servants, we are. Now, therefore, solemnise with us a covenant.
Nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont parlé en disant: « Prenez en main des provisions pour le voyage et allez à leur rencontre. Dites-leur: « Nous sommes vos serviteurs. Fais maintenant une alliance avec nous ».
12 This our bread, took we, hot, for our provision, out of our houses, on the day we came forth to journey unto you, —but, now, lo! it is dry, yea it is broken;
Voici notre pain que nous avons pris chaud pour nos provisions dans nos maisons le jour où nous sommes sortis pour aller vers vous; mais maintenant, voici, il est sec et il a moisi.
13 and, these leathern wine bottles, which we filled new, lo! also, they are rent, —and, as for these our mantles and our sandals, they are worn out, by reason of the very long journey.
Ces outres à vin, que nous avons remplies, étaient neuves; et voici qu'elles sont déchirées. Ces vêtements et nos sandales sont devenus vieux à cause du très long voyage. »
14 So the men took of their provision, —but, the bidding of Yahweh, had they not asked.
Les hommes goûtèrent à leurs provisions, et ne demandèrent pas conseil à la bouche de Yahvé.
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and solemnised with them a covenant to let them live, —and the princes of the assembly, entered into an oath with them.
Josué fit la paix avec eux et conclut une alliance avec eux, pour les laisser vivre. Les princes de l'assemblée leur jurèrent.
16 And it came to pass, at the end of three days after they had solemnised with them a covenant, that they heard that, near neighbours, they were unto them, and, in their midst, they were dwelling.
Au bout de trois jours, après qu'ils eurent fait alliance avec eux, ils apprirent qu'ils étaient leurs voisins et qu'ils vivaient parmi eux.
17 So the sons of Israel brake up, and came in unto their cities on the third day, —their cities, being Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
Les enfants d'Israël partirent et arrivèrent dans leurs villes le troisième jour. Ces villes étaient Gabaon, Chephira, Beeroth et Kiriath Jearim.
18 And the sons of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the assembly had sworn unto them by Yahweh, God of Israel, —but all the assembly murmured against the princes.
Les enfants d'Israël ne les frappèrent pas, car les chefs de l'assemblée le leur avaient juré par l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël. Toute l'assemblée murmura contre les princes.
19 And all the princes said unto all the assembly, We, have sworn unto them, by Yahweh, God of Israel, —now, therefore, we may not touch them.
Mais tous les chefs dirent à toute l'assemblée: « Nous leur avons juré par l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël. Nous ne pouvons donc pas les toucher.
20 This, will we do unto them, even let them live, —lest there come on us wrath, because of the oath which we have sworn unto them.
Nous leur ferons cela, et nous les laisserons vivre, de peur que la colère ne s'abatte sur nous, à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait. »
21 And the princes said unto them—Let them live. So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the assembly, as the princes spake unto them.
Les princes leur dirent: « Laissez-les vivre. » Ils devinrent donc des coupeurs de bois et des puiseurs d'eau pour toute l'assemblée, comme les princes le leur avaient dit.
22 And Joshua called for them, and spake unto them, saying, —Wherefore did ye deceive us, saying—We are, very far, from you, whereas, ye, in our midst, are dwelling?
Josué les fit venir et leur parla ainsi: « Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés en disant: « Nous sommes très loin de vous », alors que vous habitez au milieu de nous?
23 Now, therefore, accursed, ye are, —and ye shall not cease to be in bond-service as hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.
Maintenant, vous êtes donc maudits, et certains d'entre vous ne manqueront jamais de devenir des esclaves, aussi bien des coupeurs de bois que des puisatiers pour la maison de mon Dieu. »
24 And they responded to Joshua, and said—Because it was, plainly told, thy servants, how that Yahweh thy God had commanded Moses his servant to give unto you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, —therefore feared we greatly, for our lives, because of you, and did this thing.
Ils prirent la parole et dirent à Josué: « Parce que tes serviteurs ont certainement appris comment Yahvé ton Dieu a ordonné à Moïse, son serviteur, de te donner tout le pays et de détruire devant toi tous les habitants du pays. C'est pourquoi nous avons eu très peur pour nos vies à cause de vous, et nous avons fait cette chose.
25 Now, therefore, here we are, in thy hand, —as may be good and right in thine eyes, to do unto us, do.
Maintenant, voici, nous sommes entre tes mains. Fais de nous ce qu'il te semblera bon et juste de faire. »
26 And he did to them so, —and rescued them out of the hand of the sons of Israel, and they slew them not.
Il leur fit ainsi et les délivra de la main des enfants d'Israël, afin qu'ils ne les tuent pas.
27 And Joshua appointed them that day to be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto the assembly, —and unto the altar of Yahweh, [as they are] until this day, in the place which he should choose.
Ce jour-là, Josué les fit couper du bois et tirer de l'eau pour l'assemblée et pour l'autel de Yahvé jusqu'à ce jour, dans le lieu qu'il devait choisir.
